🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD
-
Already thought of that, but my edit wasn't quick enough.
-
Hey, if you're concerned about publicity, you could put a positive spin on it: feed the whole rest of the family for free right on their own front lawn, on the condition that they aren't permitted to bring any food back inside for him.
Do you...do you live in the US? You must made this guy a martyr. Bear in mind a lot of people think Martin Heemeyer wasn't entirely wrong in what he did.
-
Depends on what he's wanted for. You didn't say, but you indicated that he would've spent time in jail for it, so it had to be kinda serious.
-
Also let me specify:
Federal student loans are a hell of a deal.
Private student loans however...
-
Depends on what he's wanted for. You didn't say
That's because I couldn't remember. But luckily for you I eventually managed to use the right terms to find the story:
Assault on a cop, and the guy spent 15 years on his 47-acre ranch.
“It wasn’t worth it,” the sheriff said. “Joe Gray has been in prison out there himself, in my opinion, for 14 years.”
The charges were dropped about a year ago but nobody bothered to tell the guy. The Rawstory link implies the guy's a kook, with antivaxxer signs on his fence.
He almost certainly spent far more time on his acreage than he would have in jail. But look at that picture--I bet I was right and this guy didn't worry too much about it because he spent a lot of time building a network of underground tunnels to get around without the cops seeing him, or something.
Google says this is a rural county with 1000 square miles and 80K people. The cops probably felt they had better things to do with their time than risk getting shot over a bite.
-
So the moral of the story is, do whatever the fuck you want and if you wave your guns around and retreat onto your own property then the cops will just pack up and leave you in peace. Meanwhile, a man who hasn't seen his own kids for 15 years in spite of having won a court order granting him custody of them... well that's just too fucking bad, because the mother is this nutjob's daughter and they're holed up there where they're above the law.
-

I dunno, man. I bet in NYC the cops'd be glad to send in a SWAT team. Of course, it being NYC, they'd probably accidentally ventilate half a dozen bystanders.
-
Yeah... you can always tell that police were involved when you see statements like this one...
...fired 27 shots combined at a female relative who lived in the same house as them. Apparently, they weren’t expecting her to come home at that time and rather than take any chances or pause for a second to make sure it wasn’t the other person that lived in the same house as them, they came rolling out guns blazing.
Probably the most amazing thing about this is that they only managed to hit her once in the leg...
Lucky thing they were trying to hit her; if they'd have been firing at anything else she'd have certainly been killed.
-
The charges were dropped about a year ago but nobody bothered to tell the guy. The Rawstory link implies the guy's a kook, with antivaxxer signs on his fence.
Ummmm...he offered to shoot anyone who set foot on his property. I'm not going down there to tell him.
Yeah... you can always tell that police were involved when you see statements like this one...
It's been determined to be accidental. "We accidentally shot 27 times. We didn't know our guns were loaded."
-
I'm not going down there to tell him.
Hey, I think that was my point all along.
As the cops said, this guy effectively jailed himself, and for longer than the cops would've.

They didn't "accidentally shoot", they accidentally shot their relative, mistaking her for an intruder. The shots were fired quite deliberately; the mistake was in identifying the target as someone they should try to shoot.
As the cops said, this guy effectively jailed himself, and for longer than the cops would've.
Along with his daughter, two grandchildren, and how many other relatives?
-
Along with his daughter, two grandchildren, and how many other relatives?
He was self-confined to his property. Sure it was nicer than a jail cell, but he wasn't going out to Starbucks or Venetian Cinemas or even the new Perot Museum.
Some people would find that just as bad.
-
You missed the point completely. Who was all holed up there with him? Were they there willingly, or were they brainwashed into thinking that the world was out to get them? Was he hiding his grandchildren from their father who had custody of them? Why the fuck were the cops too yellow to try to find the kids and, if they did find the kids, enforce the custody transfer?
-
Bad idea: Using your work adress (i.e. my school) as a UPS delivery adress.
Because sure as hell, they previously always tried to deliver when you were at school (and thus not at home). But the one time you give them the school adress they'll try to deliver at 1700h (that's 30 minutes after everyone has gone home).
And of course, registering on their website to change the delivery adress requires an account which in turn requires physical verification by snail mail.

Away with you and your . All I know about the story is what was in the link I provided a couple days ago, which didn't mention any grandkids.

Yes, well, I also read the comments on that page, and someone linked to a more in-depth report on the situation.
A couple of highlights:
Gray owes Henderson County for unpaid taxes and was involved in a child custody dispute between his daughter and his former son-in-law, but the sheriff said none of those issues are criminal cases.
Few had put more pressure on the authorities to enter the compound than Keith Tarkington, 49, Gray’s former son-in-law. A court order granted Tarkington custody of his two children, but he believes that his sons and ex-wife have been living in the compound. He tried but failed to persuade officials to enforce the court order.
His sons are now 18 and 19, and he believes they have been sequestered with Gray since they were infants.
“The law’s letting him get away,” Tarkington said. “They always holler, ‘We don’t want no one to get hurt.’ I haven’t seen my kids in 15 years. You tell me who’s getting hurt.”
-
They didn't "accidentally shoot", they accidentally shot their relative, mistaking her for an intruder. The shots were fired quite deliberately; the mistake was in identifying the target as someone they should try to shoot.
I was exaggerating for satiric purpose.
Think about it: what were they using, full automatics? Even with two people having semi-automatics, it takes time to fire 27 rounds. And while they were doing this, did the person being shot at never scream, "It's ME you idiots!"
And magazines are usually 10 rounds or less; so someone reloaded (or maybe brought more than one gun).
At some point, this incident stopped being an accident and became negligent--or maybe even intentional--but no, "Let's write this off as an accident. Could happen to anyone."
Two anyones from what planet?
-

These were police, right? If they're using a Glock 17 (quite common for police carry) it holds 17 rounds of 9mm. Glock 19's (also quite common) hold 15 rounds. Time to empty, even in semi-automatic, could be as low as about 5 seconds. There's still a reload somewhere unless there were multiple shooters.
EDIT: Maybe they weren't police, I'm confused because of how many conversations are going on. Still, Glock 17/19's are very common among civilians too.
-
Shh, they were off-duty cops. We're not allowed to point out suspicious details of what officially took place.
-

An off-duty police officer, and her husband, who is reportedly a police cadet.

Two shooters.

[citation needed]
Every semi-auto I've fired has had a capacity of 10 rounds or more

She is a corrections officer, the news article below says they think he's a police cadet.
Off Duty Las Vegas Cops “Accidentally” Shoot at Relative 27 Times
I don't want either of them as officers in my community. They shoot at people in the dark without ascertaining their target or a threat or, apparently, even issuing a challenge. I don't want them as next door neighbors because "spray and pray" like that is going to have me dodging bullets in my house.
■■■■■■■ idiots!

I don't really care about the situation.
-
Oh. Fine then. You cared enough to post it, but when it turns out he's one of those nutter "Sovereign Citizens" who doesn't believe in taxes or government, and that for 15 years his son-in-law has been trying to get the police to enforce his custody of his children to no avail, now you don't care about the situation.
-

Yeah, I thought it was funny, I posted it, and I moved on. I don't know what your obsession is.

I own a fair number of firearms. Of the semi-automatic ones, only two have 10 or less round capacity. Ruger Mark II target pistol and SKS's. Everything else is 15 rounds or more.
Meh, there might be more, but they did not come to mind immediately. As soon as I get around to picking up a 1911, that will change.

Speaking of...
Another Bad Idea: Naming your business "StormFront Productions".
Typical bullshit marketing company, lots of Web 3.0 bullshit on their website. Flat layout, stupid extreme sports videos running in the parallax that have fuck-all to do with their business. Etc.
Also, shares a name with a white supremacy group.

You don't see any humor in this guy imposing upon himself a punishment that in some way is much harsher than what the justice system would have done? This guy wouldn't have spent 15 years in jail for biting a cop. That's hilarious!
At the same time he doesn't seem like a very nice person, and with the additional revelation about his grandkids or whatever, he seems like a pretty rotten person.
You're the one who seems to have wanted to overanalyze the whole thing here, though. I was just responding to you.
-
Cornrows are "cultural appropriation".
Aw yisss--I knew that was gonna be the answer.
-

Sick, sad irony. But not humor.

This is exactly how I think sociologists look like.
-
Not having read the article, my impression is that he could easily go another 15 without leaving the
briar patchcompound, except maybe to bite another cop (now that he's got a taste for it). If there's a sad sick irony here, I'd say it's in the likelihood that he's held up as some kind of hero by shtf types around the country.
-
This is exactly how I think sociologists look like.
Since they're entirely absent from the picture, they look much how the sociologists do in our project meetings! And yes, we're supposed to have some (because “social awareness” BS). They just never turn up despite being repeatedly told where and when they are.
-
my impression is that he could easily go another 15 without leaving
I can't see why not, given he seems to have done the first 15.
held up as some kind of hero
Not me. A richly-decorated cell is still a cell.
