Road Rage Revenge

I'll just place this here:

It's from 2012, but hilarious nonetheless.
-
Two asholes.
-
-
No, that is not funny. That sort of behaviour is reprehensible. From both drivers.
-
Oh sure. Now who's splashing water on other people's fun?
-
Forgive me for thinking people in charge of two tons of metal and plastic powered by an explosive liquid and capable of speeds of 100mph+ should show a bit of fucking responsibility

Mostly plastic. (Look at those cars.)
powered by an explosive liquid
Exploding is how it runs!
capable of speeds of 100mph+
... take another good look at those cars.
OMG they're in a DEATH MACHINE powered by EXPLOSIONS and WEIGHS TONS and GOES 100 MPH!!!!!
RUN! RUN FROM THE DEATH MACHINE!
-
No, that is not funny

Well seeing as the memory of a cyclist riding straight across my path and ending up on my windscreen last week is still fresh in my memory, and that happened in spite of me being an attentive driver and taking particular care at that crossroads because I know it has bad visibility and it being in a 20mph zone, and if any of those things hadn't been the case he might well not have walked away... I'm with Urchin.
It's not a toy, it's a piece of heavy machinery.

It's not a toy, it's a piece of heavy machinery.
Well duh, but a bigger problem than that is cyclists are all twats who never follow the rules of the road. Frankly I wouldn't feel all that bad about clobbering one after I spent the 5 milliseconds to ensure it wasn't my fault.
The entire Seattle driving experience is constantly slamming on the brakes to avoid hitting cyclists who are making illegal turns, with the cyclists usually giving you the finger for having the audacity to attempt to save them from their own stupidity.
-

If you ever hit and injure a cyclist, which I sincerely hope you don't, then come back and say that again.
In the meantime, the fact that some of the people you're sharing road space with are going to behave like toddlers is why it's so important not to. If one party is behaving idiotically, there's still a fair chance both parties will get away with their lives, and hopefully with bones, skin, and vehicles intact, if the other party was taking appropriate care.
According to both the Highway Code and the mystical tome of common bloody sense, it's your responsibility to drive in such away that you could react if another road user did something unexpected.
-
I haven't hit a cyclist, but it's been less than 24 hours since I've seen a pair of cyclists run a red light to cross a 4-lane one-way street at the tail end of the afternoon rush hour.
Seriously, defensive driving can only get you so far.
-
Seriously, defensive driving can only get you so far.
That's what I'm saying.
I'm a good driver, I haven't been cited for any violations in like 12 years. And that was speeding, which is just "ad-hoc taxation" around here.
-
Seriously, defensive driving can only get you so far.
Sure. But did you hear that whooshing sound? That was the point.
I'm a good driver
No-one said anything about your driving.
-
And that was speeding, which is just "ad-hoc taxation" around here.
Time for a completely irrelevant anecdote:
Last year, I was at QED, and saw Robert Llewellyn's talk on renewables and electric cars. At one point he was talking about a trip he'd done in an electric car from London to Scotland, demonstrating that range anxiety isn't as big a deal as some people make it out to be. To illustrate that he hadn't been crawling along at walking pace he said it was all done at motorway speeds, "which realistically means around 80MPH"
This off hand comment was too much for one member of the audience, who squawked out "That's ILLEGAL!", then proceded to try and dominate the Q&A session after the talk with strawman questions about "Why do you think it's acceptable to glorify speeding?" and generally making a tit out of herself. And that's my completely off topic <cool>story<bro>.

That's exactly the sort of person I'd expect at a
talk on renewables and electric cars.

Was she wearing a t-shirt shamelessly advertising her membership of BRAKE?
-
I'd actually met her previously and she was trying to push some campaign to replace lots of 30 zones with 20. Full in on the "speed kills" kool aid.
-
I'm all for reducing 30 zones to 20 zones, but only outside schools, and I'd only worry about enforcing it during the peak times i.e. when the children are arriving/leaving. Other than that, I don't see a reason to reduce limits; in some places, I'd actually increase them.
-
There's a decent amount of evidence that reducing speed limits too much leads people to complacency because they feel too safe, then they don't pay enough attention and are more likely to have an accident
-
Agreed; that's why I'm very specific about having 20 zones only outside schools.
-
Wait a sec ...
You guys are talking about 30 miles per hour? That really seems terrifyingly high for a limit used around schools.
-
You don't already have school zones in the UK? Freaking barbarians.
-
That really seems terrifyingly high for a limit used around schools.
Which is why I have no issue with setting a limit of 20 outside them ;)
@blakeyrat said:You don't already have school zones in the UK?
-
Most schools I've driven past in the last 5+ years have had 20 limits at times when there are children around, and 30 otherwise.
-

Well it generally isn't, it's generally 20 around schools. It's 30 in built-up areas in general.
If you hit a child at 30, there's an 80% chance that they'll glide back across several feet of road while their bones audibly pop back into place.
-
There's a lot of 30 km/h (~20 mph) here, both around schools and otherwise in residential areas. However I do believe there's a national guideline on the upper limit of how long it should take to reach a 50 km/h (~30mph) thoroughfare.
-
I'll take those odds!
-
You can laugh but that PSA mentally scarred the entire population of Britain. Also the Level crossing one. And the other 30mph one. And the seatbelt one. And ... well really the entire THINK! campaign. They call them PSAs but essentially they're a series of short horror films.
Also I'm a couple of generations too young but Darth Vader used to teach kids how to cross roads safely.

When I was a wee hoglet, it was the Green Cross Code Man who did that. My primary school also did basic cycling proficiency; are those things still taught at schools nowadays?
-

Yes, he was the actor who played Darth Vader.

It was about 13 years ago. I don't actually know if they still do but I expect so.
-
Yes, he was the actor who played Darth Vader.
David Prowse used to teach kids about road safety?
-
Don't forget this chap. Scary stuff.
-
I'm all for reducing 30 zones to 20 zones, but only outside schools
Over here in South Australia, the speed limit is 25km/h outside schools. That's 15.5 mph.

Correct!Though having looked up the Green Cross Code Man, I think I was actually a few years too late to see that. Unless they'd been taped and replayed, which is entirely possible.
-
I was at a garden centre the other day, and there were speed limit signs in the car park for 43/4 MPH.
-
David Prowse used to teach kids about road safety?
Yup! He played the UK version of Tufty.
-
speed limit signs in the car park
That's not really a speed limit though. It's just a request from the owners of the premises. I expect they could ask you to leave if they caught you driving at 5mph.
-
I expect they could ask you to leave if they caught you driving at 5mph.
but you should leave very slowly
-
but you should leave very slowly
Because otherwise they'll ask you to leave, uh, more?
-
-
That is exactly the one. Are you stalking me?
-
-
I expect they could ask you to leave if they caught you driving at 5mph.
What about walking very fast? Or running? Would they throw you out for that too?
-
If I were you'd never know...
The sign has its own page on this site:
There's a whole section on unusual speed limits.
-
Wait a sec ...You guys are talking about 30 miles per hour?

In the Chicago area and suburbs, this is what I typically see around schools:
While I consider most posted speed limits too slow, this one is right on.Irrelevant side note: Any slower, and you may as well ban stick-shift cars while you're at it because some untrained moron will surge forward faster every time they drop it into first gear.
-

If you're using first to do 10-15mph, then Use second already!
-
If they can't drive walking pace (~3MPH) using stick then they can't drive stick. No reason to ban those who do know.
