The nerdy jokes thread (bonus original title mode!)

Fun fact: They don't block facebook. I'm guessing someone complained about too many browser-based games and the potential addiction factor and that's why gaming sites got blocked.
Fun fact 2: I spend way more time here than on facebook >.>
-
...whatever's happening here, my work's filter has it blocked.
Wait for @system to
stealcache the image...
-
I still can't see it on the website, but the email I got for you replying to me showed it perfectly XD
-
That site is doing something weird with hotlinks, I think. It seems to add a link to their site around the image.
-
-
For comparison:
And my email:
-
It looks like maybe they took the whole stealing images legal gray area thing under advisement and actually adjusted it? It hyperlinks to the source and embeds from the external location instead of rehosting:
(explanation and image for posterity since it'll probably change with no warning tomorrow)
-
I used to work at a place that filtered out "Blogs/opinion"
Which meant any time I was searching for a way to solve a programming problem and found a promising looking blog I had to passive-aggressively read the Google cached version

Yeah...I was just browsing the commits and didn't see anything that looked related in the last few days.
-
Unless this is a new discothing?
Yep.
Maybe in response to the whole "Discourse steals images and does not credit the sources" thing? Ideally, it should also show the link URL below the image. I imagine Discourse meetings go something like this:
Atwood: "We need to add this silly feature I just thought up that is a solution waiting for a problem!"
Developer: "I will start just as soon as I clear the backlog of some bug reports."
Atwood: "The hell with the bug reports!! This is top priority! We need to get it implemented so that I can dream up a problem that this will solve! How long will it take?"
Developer: "I would say between X and Y hours?"
Atwood: "How long will it take if you just half ass it?"
Developer: "I can have a beta version working in an hour or two?"
Atwood: "Gotcha, final version will go live in an hour. Good meeting folks, carry on."
Developer: "I did not say I could have a full..."
Atwood: cutting the developer off "I said carry on, meeting is over. I have important shit to do. These chickens are not going to fuck themselves!"

I doubt they have meetings.

True. Jeff probably just loads useless shit on the right side of the swimlanes in scrum and deletes all tickets as they get loaded in to the QA/Testing lane. Progress!
-
This workplace is the same way. It'll block everything related to games (including, annoying, gaming news sites.) In fact, "gaming" seems to be the only category that's blocked, although I did once get a block notice that read, "informational site". (I assume that was a glitch somewhere.)
But Facebook? Wide-open. Same with Twitter. Go figure.

You think they have scrum software? Hah!
-
I did once get a block notice that read, "informational site"
It would be an impediment to work if you were able to get information.
-
Yes but I already joked about it on my Twitter.
-
That site is doing something weird with hotlinks, I think. It seems to add a link to their site around the image.
That is my doing. It's only fair that I link to the author's site. Now my question is: does a link around an image prevent caching? I'll test this.
-
Oh, I see now. Now the image is linked to its original location.
This is completely unrelated to the linking I've done and the fact we're noticing it now is pure coincidence.

Yes. It's been going on for a while, I think.
-
You think they have scrum? Hah!
If by “scrum” you mean a large press of men all groping each other in pursuit of some ball… maybe! But it would be impolite to inquire too closely.

Oh, so you're familiar with the "Rugby Lads" series, then? Funny, I always pictured you as more of an 'Ultimate Surrender' (naked female wrestling) fan, but then you never know which way someone swings, do you...Filed Under: Yes, those both exist, and no, I'm not linking to them
-
Oh, so you're familiar with the "Rugby Lads" series, then?
The Premiership? I watch occasionally.

I take from the... ahem... coupling, that the former is along the same lines as the latter?
-
Just so, although it isn't specifically naked rugby (though that might be a good idea...), just naked Rugby players. Though grappling does play a part...

... and there are few things funnier than a weeping duck.

I wonder if that has anything to do with the Standard Markdown launch fiasco. Jeff seemed to be pretty happy pretending legal stuff didn't exist. Then he got bitten by not having the legal rights to use the name "markdown" for his standardization project, which potentially sunk it before it even started. So now, he's more careful?
-
The images stuff happened before the markdown kerfluffle. We're not certain how far before. I guess someone could go through and try to find the latest image replaced by @system.
-
@System only has 6 edits :/
-
Yes, I looked at that profile the other day when we first noticed this. Maybe @PJH can see more of its activity as an admin? Otherwise, I was thinking that someone will have to go through an old thread (maybe the nerdy jokes thread or bad ideas) with lots of images.
-
Looks like somewhere between August 12th and 13th:
System updated this one:

But this turns into a hotlinked image with a link:

Did he ever find out if there was any man in Rome who hadn't slept with his daughter? I mean, it's been 2000 years, you'd think he'd have gotten an answer by now.

thanks discourse, now we can all laugh at @cartman82's hilarious and completely legible image.

Or in this case don't. Unless you really are bored....)

I didn't know about the second click.

I didn't know about the second click.
It's because they use the wrong type of pointer. It should really show as a zoom-in pointer rather than the standard arrow.

Drop it in bugs as a link and I'll get to it. I'm not going fishing.
