Android storage full, am I screwed?
-
I have a cheapo Wayteq xTab-700qci tablet. It just gave me the dreaded
Storage space running out. Some system functions may not work.
message. I tried every solution that I could find but none of them works. These are the parameters:
Internal storage: 1 GB
- Available: 68 MB
- Apps: 863 MB
- Google Play Services: 478 MB
- Google App: 46 MB after deleting data but it automatically grows back to 69 MB
- Adobe Acrobat, Google Drive, Firefox, FolderSync and iRealPro are the only other apps I have installed besides system apps. All of them take up under 40MB on internal storage because I've moved each to the internal 5.6 GB SD card where it was possible.
I've cleared data and cache for all apps.
The 'System functions may not work' part is true. App updates usually fail because of insufficient space and I'm now getting used to getting 'Google Play Services has stopped' and 'android.process.acore has stopped working' messages right after startup.
What should I do? Is rooting the only solution? Is Android such that only by hacking its bowels can I make it usable?
Also, I know this is a real cheap tablet, but does syncing files in the background justify a 15 minute wait for any app to open or the keyboard to appear? Clock freezes and the button press feedback animation comes after 1 minute? Really?

Hot damn, and I thought I was suffering with only a 3 Gb partition...
-
Yeah, seriously. I have 16gb and mine's giving me the same error.
-
@marczellm 1 GB storage? I'd say it's time to buy a new cheapo Android tablet. There are tons out there for under $50.
-
Ah. There's your problem, and why GPS is so huge (because it has so many compatibility libraries at that level it's almost as bad as Windows).

Yep but I'm seriously opposed to the idea of throwing something out just because it's old. I'm very angry at this tablet or any gadget that becomes unusable over time just because fuck the customer.

Factory Reset it, and never install updates then. There, problem solved, here's a service bill for $75.
HTH TYVM HAND

Rooting will help to a point. I thought that rooting would be the magic solution to everything...
After I rooted I ran into the space issue pretty quickly as I reinstalled some apps. I ended up removing some crapware and that helped.
I still run into out of space issue every so often. This is what I've been doing to fix it.
Run Titanium Backup.
Go to Menu->Overview of app storage use.
Let it calculate.
Right now I have 441 MB used by Download Manger. I dunno WTF that is, but I usually clear that space and I'm good again for a bit.

It's what's used to do things like Download stuff. If it crashes downloads don't resume but leave their junk in whatever cache folder it's using and may not clean it up automatically.

It'll still be just as usable (for definitions of usable) after a factory reset, which will clear all the cruft.
Alternatively, you might be able (because it's almost certainly got unrestricted
su
access) to do weird scaryln
tricks to make everything live on an external SD. This is VERY VERY DANGEROUS but might be your best bet.

Yeah. I'd rather have a 3 Gb "Internal SD" partition and a 9 Gb "Internal Storage" partition than the reverse. Almost Anything that can go in "Internal SD" can just as easily go in "External SD", but almost nothing in "Internal Storage" can actually go to "Internal SD".

GS5... Looking now there may be a way to go to 6.x... Last I checked a few months back I think 6.x was too new.
What sucks is that I can't unlock my bootloader yet. I exchanged the phone under warranty, and my old one had the samsung emmc, and the new one has the toshiba. Guess which one can be unlocked?

One day when I'm truly bored and have done the rest of my bucket list I'll back the whole truck up and see about applying the patch and see if it works on my current ROM.

-
@dangeRuss said in Android storage full, am I screwed?:
Is there a way to tell it not to download crap to my internal storage?
Short answer: No, by design.
Long answer: I believe there were a few redirector apps that tried to have downloads go to user-specified locations, but those don't work on 5.0 and up because permissions.Yeah, if downloads are sticking in cache that means something keeps interrupting it (i.e. by killing the process) so it doesn't clean itself up.

Yea, it's called I have too much shit running on my phone so some apps tend to die. Doesn't mean it shouldn't clean itself up.
Also permissions, smermissions. I got root. Any apps that do that with root?
-
@dangeRuss said in Android storage full, am I screwed?:

Yeah, it sounds like the downloads app doesn't check the cache file for orphan files so to the app anything it's not actively touching may as well not exist.
@dangeRuss said in Android storage full, am I screwed?:

Not sure, like I said, it's been a while. For me, I installed MiXplorer, which registers itself as a download handler, and from there whenever I download something I use that instead of "Browser" or whatever and that app prompts me on where I want to save stuff.
But if the app in question is using Downloads directly (i.e. like the Play Store), then I'm not sure, you'll have to research that.

Because that was the cromulent way to have a pseudo SD card for devices that didn't actually support it back in the day, and then it got abused.

In some old Samsung phones, there was some log file that growed out of control and was hard to find in the UI.
People used one of those secret manufacturer codes to access a menu that could clear it.
Perhaps a factory reset would do the needful if you don't find a better way.

Did anyone find if this tablet is rootable. If so, there may be a way to repartition it and get back the space /maybe even run a custom ROM like CM7 or something.
-
@dangeRuss Yes there is. You know what you are getting, and I didn't buy one after launch day. I bought my 6S a few weeks ago as it is a really good phone. The iPhone 7 is a piece of shite because of the lack of headphone jack and there was room for it in the case (check the iFixit teardown).

So I don't know anything about rooting a device other than reading at places that it involves replacing the ROM which is sort of undefined behaviour. I did not know until today that some devices are rootable and some aren't. Now this tablet doesn't even have ADB drivers so you cannot use it to develop for Android. I'd say if there's one device that's not rootable it's this one.
How do you find it out if it is?
