WTF is happening with Windows 10? And nothing else

Wow, filenames so long the server itself has to ellipsis-ize them before sending it out...
Lorne's Law of UI Development #22: There is literally never any need to ellipse anything. Someone needs to see that filename, or full name, or description.
Corollary 1: That exception you just thought of? No. Not even that one.

Discourse: why the fuck is the bookmark icon beneath an ellipse? Fucking hell.

Three posts in a row? Have you considered letting others speak a bit? :P :P :P

I did, but then I remembered everyone else just has useless bullshit to say.

Engine, just tell me what I said wrong there! FFS you help out less and less every day!

Because a bunch of special snowflakes (read: Mafia players) wanted the Delete button to be put there (to make it harder to click by mistake), and apparently, Discourse will only put something under an ellipsis button if there's at least 2 somethings to put there. So they moved Bookmark there too.
It only really affects your own posts, though, because other people's posts don't have a Delete button, and it doesn't create an ellipsis for their posts because there'd only be one thing under it (Bookmark).
-
So they moved Bookmark there too.
I really want to know if we can get statistics on the number of users who bookmark their own posts...
-
I assume it's pretty few, and probably why they picked Bookmark as the thing to put there along with Delete.

I think I've ONLY bookmarked my own, since they have info I need to use more than once, but not often.

How hard is it to remember "Fuck you give me money!" ?
-
Wow, filenames so long the server itself has to ellipsis-ize them before sending it out...
... the actual on-disk files have these ellipses too - this is to prevent hitting the Win32 MAX_PATH limit and breaking a bunch of stuff in the process.
-

.... Wat.
That's incredible, but indeed, so very much Microsoft....

That is the full filename. The assembly/component name is pre-ellipsized from the start, as it was written, to make room for the platform, public key, version number, language, fingerprint, and extension. It's all gotta fit in under 253 characters somehow...... by @NTAuthority. Should have guessed...

Grrrr, I just spent the last week fighting with Windows Update. Damned thing insisted on "upgrading" my network driver to one that was: a) old and b) SSOD'ing every time you woke up from suspend...
The fact that I'm on Home didn't help because Microsoft clearly knows so much better than me how to operate the computer...
In the end I finally found a tool hidden deep within the crevices of Microsoft that allows you to block an update...
-
I had a ton of problems with Windows 10 and a WiFi driver which would not connect after suspend. Turns out the problem was actually VirtualBox. VB installs a network driver for bridge mode Virtual machines, and causes .... problems ....
Apparently on the VB forums this was reported a few years ago. .. .. . .

A bit of a reality check on some of the recent hysterical W10 spying stories out there.
:cringe: that article and then the 800 comments saying it's wrong. not enjoyable reading.

An essential tool for sure, but one caveat of those troubleshooters is that they can't run from a network drive for some reason.
-
for some reason
Yes, exactly that. You'd need to map the drives as admin too. Same thing if you use
subst
.
-

One of these days MS will figure out how to preserve your network connections during elevation. I mean, it complains when trying to map with different username/password, so clearly it must know about it, so why not re-use it? What possible security ramification is being used that this can't be a thing?

Apparently my wife's Win10 machine updated or something today and after it rebooted she panicked a bit when it told her that her files were right where she had left them. Like..."Nice files you have there. Be a shame if they got lost."
It also didn't automatically reconnect to the wireless network that it always connects to.
##THANKS OBAMA

It also didn't automatically reconnect to the wireless network that it always connects to.
And it didn't reconnect again this morning when she opened up her laptop! Of course, clicking on the network icon thingy in the tray doesn't bring you to a useful page where you can just click on the network you want. You have to dick around to get there. "There" being a metro monstrocity of a thing.
And then, when I clicked on it, there was a checkbox there, which I had checked yesterday, and was still checked: "Connect Automatically." But it didn't. So we clicked on that and it connected. And then it said "No Internet." But that was a lie, too, because magically, the intertubes worked!

Are you sure you're not using @cartman82's computer?
-
was still checked
Yeah. When the driver crashes, even when it comes back up Windows won't automatically reconnect to known networks.
I suppose the idea is to avoid the driver crashing again repeatedly?
-
Are you sure you're not using @cartman82's computer?
86.4% sure.

Hmmm...is there a log or something I could check to verify that it crashed?

Cortana "Reliability" -> start View Reliability History, see if it shows up there. Also you could probably check the event viewer.

She woke up and is using her computer. I'll try that stuff later.

Just admit it : you installed it on Linux hardware.

I wish I had. She just left so I thought I'd sneak a peek. Can't even bring up the start thingy. How do you restart Windows without the menu again?
ETA: Whew...Win+X worked.

Ah...didn't know there was a way to do that from the CLI. But AltF4 wasn't working either. Holy shit, it takes forever to boot. "Please Wait...[spinner]"
Fuck...the search didn't work for a long time. Event viewer was useless. The Reliability thingy didn't show anything about network / wireless drivers. It did show the "Windows shell experience host" dying a lot. Which seems about right. This shit sucks.
You people are insane to put up with this shit.

Has this been in here yet? A security update for MSIE apparently installs an ad generator: http://www.infoworld.com/article/3042155/microsoft-windows/windows-patch-kb-3139929-when-a-security-update-is-not-a-security-update.html

"Please Wait...[spinner]"
If you're seeing that, it's probably updating via re-installing again.
Dunno if that's a good thing or....

I haven't seen any problems like that, on 4 different computers, both at home and at work. You should throw that thing out and buy your wife a better, newer laptop.

One with Linux on it, you mean. I agree.

Dude, you have a hardware fault.
Windows doesn't do those things on healthy hardware.
