That rising xenophobia in the UK is more interesting right now than status quo in Japan?
It's not rising.
All the reports of terrorism in Europe was noticed. And now all the people that have always been a little against importing from the Middle East finally decided to show up and vote.
People and their moral-superiority complex... smh

Look, despite all the polarization and demonization, it's ok to have different views and different needs.
No, it's an important fact of life that people voting differently is a failure of democracy.

When people start talking about the rising xenophobia in the UK, they aren't talking about the brexit lot winning the referendum.

The current xenophobia, that multiple sources have said is rising, ostensibly isn't about the middle east. Europe doesn't dictate our immigration policy from outside the EU or the number of refugees we take in. Of course, some people seem to have voted out thinking it would affect that, but there are idiots in every vote
-
@kt_ said in Hey, UK, be white, be Christian, be Great?:
if someone voted for staying, they're doing this because EU gives them money! There is no other reason someone could vote the other way!
Apart from the whole not being a pig-ignorant racist buffoon with a nationalist axe to grind thing, obvs.

It's good to be a large, rather powerful country. Cuz, you know, smaller EU members like Poland actually have quotas for how much refugees they have to take...
-
@xaade TBH, I've lived in about 4 different countries now and my experience is that the most British people aren't racist.
Most of the racism comes from Poles these days (I used to work part/full time in a warehouse while at college and uni 10 years) and I knew enough phrases to know when they were basically talking about some of the Black and Pakkistani / Bangladeshi guys that worked with me.

Oy, kurwa.
(But yeah, we're a pretty isolationist country. And it doesn't help that we didn't exactly send our intellectual elite to you...)

TBH I can't really blame Poland considering the events of the 20th century.

be careful which country you say that about

We did, in 1940. Since then, well...

I love how everyone is focused on UK's current 'racism' of... not a race... or whatever, and completely ignore that Japan is even more exclusive against Muslims and don't generally give a fuck.
I suppose people gave up on trying to convince them?
Or maybe people just don't really care what happens in weird countries on the other side of the earth. I wouldn't take it as a proof that racism is o.k.

You should throw them out, then.

"refuse refugee" < "deport people"
Too bad Carter did both.

@xaade, I'd love to have a conversation with you, but I seriously do not understand what you are trying to say.
"Not only" what? Not only throw them out? "Much worse": much worse than what, who?
Where did I talk about refusing refugees? (I guess "throwing Poles out" could be what you meant by "deporting people".
What did Carter do? Remember that though there are many US citizens here, a lot of us are not.
I'd be happy to discuss something with you, but please start making sense first.

Good luck with that. I believe with @xaade that there is a very short path between thoughts and speech/typing. His thoughts are expressed very free-form with very little mental editing to get from thoughts in head to communication.
Or, as one of our other forum members put it, he communicates in a very "stream of consciousness sort of manner". :P
-
Definitely a stream of something.

Hey, if you want to go and live in the middle of our deserts, go ahead — as long as you're not going to complain about not having any nearby communities (or nearby anything), roads, water, arable land, health services, etc. The trouble is, most people do complain about that stuff and expect the government to sort it out with magical pixie dust.
Here's an example of a recent plan to close a number of remote communities. The backlash was intense enough that the plan was ultimately abandoned, with a promise that we'll find more efficient ways of spreading around the magic pixie dust so that somehow it can work.
115 communities have an average of five residents.
