Why is it "disgusting" to drink breast milk?
-
@lucas1 age of consent here is 14 years, and everyone is OK with it here. 18 is ridiculous IMO.
-
@Polygeekery I agree that what that woman does (if she even exists) is very likely abuse, because, as has been mentioned, she has authority over her minor son (so it's not between consenting adults).
@lucas1 But you used the word "legal". You don't have to go far to find illegal behaviors between consenting adults. "Sodomy" (a term usually left vague in laws against it - a very clear sign of bad laws) and prostitution come to mind.
-

It was a mental fart. I basically meant no rape and no kids, all western societies agree on this.
It is basically impossible to enforce such laws such as "sodomy" unless being caught in the act, it is also the problem with rape convictions ... it is almost impossible to determine consent between adults if nobody else was there... that is why there are some laws on what is appropriate in the bedroom. However it is a very complicated subject and not something that should be discussed in this thread.
EDIT: Prostitution should probably be legal, regulated (for safety of everyone, like they do in Australia and some European Countries), I personally think that making it illegal make things like sex trafficking more attractive to criminals.
-
I've heard of some hipster coffee shops around here that offer breast milk. I don't think I'd be up for trying that unless I could ensure the purity by personally milking the cow.

Sex workers activists wholeheartedly agree with the second part of your sentence (also, in places where prostitution is illegal, cops are the #1 source of violence against sex workers). However, the legal framework they prefer is decriminalization (like in New Zealand)*, because overly restrictive regulations have effects similar to criminalization (if demand exceeds legal supply, illegal supply will come in, and so will criminals).
- General regulations about business and employment still apply, obviously. And stuff like "no minors" is reasonable (in case regular employment regulations are less strict on that point), though it would be hard to enforce on independent workers (prostitution is not uncommon among runaway teens, as it is a way to support themselves without risking being returned to their parents - something they often have good reason to want to avoid).

@Khudzlin There is nothing I disagree with in what you are saying in principle. It seems sensible. I am not interesting in it, but I understand that it is going to happen whether it is legal or not. So I say legalise it and regulate it within reason.

I'm in favor of decriminalization/legalization mainly for the reason that it would help segregate the dating pool of people who are looking for long-term relationships from the pool of people who are only looking for One Thing™. Easy access would also remove incentives for people to play games (since there's always a sex worker down the street who's very honest about his/her motives).

@Gąska Please tell me that article is satire.
Iunno about this one, but long time ago I read a very serious article about mothers who sold excess milk online. One of them said that she gives her own milk to her husband and teenage children on regular basis (not exactly breastfeeding - because she milked herself to bottles before meal - but still).

Feminists generally want to keep prostitution illegal (even if only illegal for the johns) to keep the supply limited.
-
@Karla It depends what sort of feminists.
There are sexually positive feminists that says that whatever a lady does as long as it under her own will is "positive".
And there are those that object because they are saying they are perverting the "message".
My argument for it is that it would make it safer for sex workers.

And the harpies hate them.
-
@Magus Maybe so. But then you get into the whole true Scotsmen stuff.
-
I think there are several reasons that it's disgusting.
- It doesn't really taste that good. Kind of bland.
- It's not pasteurized, so you don't know what viruses/bacteria are in it. Cow milk can be pretty deadly if it hasn't been pasteurized. Raw milk is illegal in most states, and in those where it's legal, they have to keep testing it to make sure that it doesn't have any bad stuff in it.
- If you don't know the source of the breast milk and the fact that it's not pasteurized, I wouldn't be surprised if you could catch some STD that way.
-
@otter In the UK it is 16.
However. If a "girl" of 13 is sleeping with a guy of over 16 the police won't prosecute unless the girl herself complains (this is to avoid say 18 year old guys going to prison for sleeping with 15 year olds).
I dunno the rules for boys or gay lads (it used to be different, it used to be 18)
However there was no rule until recently for Lesbians sleeping with young women in the UK. There was no precedent for a woman abusing a young girl.
I haven't read the law on this for about 5 years so I could be somewhat inaccurate. I get told the updates from my mother who is a child protection officer in the social service.

Ehh.. I don't have a problem with that. As long as it tastes good and safe to drink.
-
@russ0519 If it was from some gradma tits would it be bad then?
-
@lucas1 said in Why is it "disgusting" to drink breast milk?:
In the UK it is 16.
In Germany it's 14, with the following exceptions:
- You are not allowed to pay an underage person for sex in any way (money or in exchange for goods/favors/services).
- You are not allowed to abuse a position of power over the underage person (teacher, legal guardian, …).
There is also an additional rule for people between the ages of 14 and 16 if the partner is over 21, but I don't think it's ever applied in practice, since you'd have to prove that the younger partner did not have the ability to make an informed decision about his/her own sex life. (In general, it is assumed that by the age of 14, you have that ability.)

Do you know how old the cow is? You don't want to see where your food comes from. You just want to know that it's safe and tastes good. Plus I'm pretty sure that a grandma would not be able to produce breastmilk without some heavy medication. In which case I would be against said medication. Yea... natural breast milk only...

@cartman82 said in Why is it "disgusting" to drink breast milk?:
Milk disgust has more to do with anti-cannibalism instinct than anything woman related.
Not cannibalism. Drinking milk — human or other mammal — is not the same as eating the animal that produced it. The entire purpose of milk is to be consumed by (young) animals of the same species. (Only humans are so strange as to drink the milk of other species.) No mammal could survive infancy without drinking the milk of its own kind. It makes no sense to call this cannibalism.
That said, drinking the milk of some random woman is a bit odd. Less so if you obtain it directly from the source, perhaps, but then she might not be described as random, unless you are a lot more promiscuous than I would consider sensible.

This is a good point. Bear in mind that milk is, by design (or whatever; not here to get into creation vs. evolution vs. whatever else debates so please don't read it that way folks) essentially a perfect form of nourishment for the species that produces it. It has to be, because early on it's [supposed to be] the source of 100% of the body's nutrition, so it has to be able to take care of everything that the body needs.

Have you not seen/heard stories of a mother dog or pig "adopting" a kitten or puppy (not its own species) and feeding them?

-
Humans and bodily fluids are super weird.
For example, scientists do this experiment a lot.
- Swallow your spit please.
- Drink some water from this cup please.
- Spit into this cup please.
- Drink from the spitcup.
Why is step 4 gross? The cup is clean. Your spit is clean. Once your fluids leave your 'self' they become gross, for more or less mysterious reasons.

I intended to imply in a "natural" animal or pre-technological human society, but I guess I failed to convey that as clearly as I thought I had.

Yeah, but that's unusual. It may work for the occasional individual, but for a species, it's a short road to extinction.

I would be surprised if there weren't any cases of babies surviving without access to breastmilk.
For example, from this subreddit (I know not the most trustworthy source).
In situations that you described, newborns could survive for a short while on sugar water. A non-medical assumption would be for 2-3 days for a very new born child.
But don't forget, mother mortality rates where really high back in the day and there was no formula. So sans zombie apocalypse people turned to a lactating relative or wet nurse, or fed the baby goat or cows milk. People also made crude formula out of evaporated milk and corn syrup.

symbiosis
Is man's relationship with Os bovis mutualistic or parasitic? PETA, I'm sure would claim it's abusive. But as a species, they are almost certainly far more numerous than they would be without having been domesticated, and for dairy cattle, at least, individuals' lives are longer and healthier.

Mutualistic, hands down. Modern cows wouldn't exist at all without domestication. Next question.
(PETA are nutters.)

Because only humans have the technical capability to do it.

There are milk sharing groups. I had so much extra milk I donated a decent amount. There are milk banks that require a specific tests, etc before they accept the milk. But milk sharing is much more casual.

Except enough vitamin D and iron. Though, many people had far more exposure to the sun than (at least I do now) so they could produce their own vitamin D.

I get that but that wasn't what I meant. If its empowering women to rent out their hoo-has, what does that say if they're denied customers?
When I was first in college in upstate New York, it wasn't illegal for minors to drink beer, but it was illegal to sell alcohol to minors. Same-ish thing.

It makes sense to me. Once the fluid has left your body it can quickly become unsanitary (saliva probably wasn't sanitary to begin with). More importantly, it quickly becomes unidentifiable as your own.
Saliva also rapidly cools. For some reason cold spit is way grosser than warm spit. I don't get bothered by a deep kiss even though saliva is shared.
I guess if she wanted to drip spit into my mouth from an inch away then things have gotten weird and I'm not sure if I'm cool with it anymore. Depends on how hot she is - hey, like people were saying about the breast milk!

But then we come back to the pelrun comment and, seriously, is it worse to drink milk from a random woman than from a random cow?
Yes. Most cow milk, like @Adynathos mentioned, is pasteurized. I rather doubt this person is pasteurizing their breast milk for the thief (assuming it's not just a troll note). Even comparing unpasteurized cow milk to human milk, there's a difference in infection potential - anything you could get from a unpasteurized cow milk is likely to be some generic bacterial disease (e.g., certain versions of E. coli), but human milk can also pass human-specific infections*
OTOH, if it's a non-random human the milk is coming from, you have a perhaps increased chance of making sure they're clean, thus moving the risk to at or below the level of cow milk.
tl;dr: random person = disease vector; non-random person =
*: And human antibodies, which could maybe be beneficial if they survive an adult stomach and you contract a disease the other person's had recently enough to still be producing antibodies.
@ChrisH said in Why is it "disgusting" to drink breast milk?:
Because it tastes like drinking pure evaporated milk. Way too much fat.
The taste seems to vary a lot from person to person, and from stage to stage.
@Karla said in Why is it "disgusting" to drink breast milk?:
Feminists generally want to keep prostitution illegal (even if only illegal for the johns) to keep the supply limited.
There's not a single feminist view on it, and differing views on different aspects of sex are part of the basis for different subdivisions of feminists.

I did try mine. I think it is sweeter than cow's milk. Probably not much weirder than eating something she chewed and spit out.
