The new installer is really fast to install/uninstall. Like it will probably take you half an hour at worst, unlike the usual 3-5.
What the hell is the installer doing for 3-5 hours ?
-
@TimeBandit I don't know, and I don't want to know. I know it spreads itself far and wide and installs OS updates and generally just gets inside of places where it's impossible to get out properly. The new one doesn't, though.

Well at least the Gobi desert is dry, right? It rained last night so it's humid as anything here in the office...

WOMM (I've put it on 4, including one VM)
I'm still babysitting the uninstaller so I can get around to running the installer.
That was Microsoft's official advice, by the way.
It worked! Once. The next time I restarted Visual Studio I started getting this shit again:

Intel. Literally watched the screen with the Intel logo plastered on the screen the whole way (UEFI failed to init something I guess, and wouldn't attempt to continue, and wouldn't show an error. I suspect hard lock, the thing was damn hot when I opened the case to manually shut it off)...

My original username here was myfirstname.mylastname@myemployer.com.
When I became a regular and wanted to start posting about my (then) employer, I asked Alex to drop the domain name from the username.
When we migrated to we were given a week grace period to change usernames, which I took advantage of.

Looks like I bailed out on Windows Phone just in time. This reminds me of the years of "No, Silverlight is not dying and we're committed to improving it. Silverlight is the best thing ever. No, Silverlight is not dying. Silverlight is still here. Silverlight will never die. Oh wait, we lied, we're suddenly killing the project and assigning all personnel elsewhere."
This could be the beginning of the end for the best mobile OS.

At risk of The drives are metal, that would utterly destroy them.
If you meant the casing, that's a no go as well, as the bracket that holds the drive is specifically engineered to hold only 7mm drives anyways, and it would thus fall out of the laptop without even more ugly bodging. Not worth the effort.

@mott555 Or, the shitty 'journalist' didn't bother actually reading the page he linked to, where it was explained that the old app wouldn't be supported but Windows 10 has a brand new UWP one, which will be.

I've never used skype on mine for anything other than IM, and that's been integrated with the messaging app for a long time now. I guess this might impact a few people, though? Idk, the full app was awful.
-
@Magus I never used it either, but Skype seemed like a first-class citizen for any Microsoft platform so losing it is quite surprising. Like if the next Halo game didn't support Xbox.
-
@mott555 Just installed the Insider Preview for the new Skype win10 app, which works on phone and pc. I like it better than the old one by far already.

Last time I tried the

@Tsaukpaetra Well I just installed it and sent a friend a message. It's infinitely better than the old one, in that its responsive and looks nice, but I haven't done much yet.

Yeah, my experience last time was "It launched, the UI looks like it was meant for people to use with their fists, and kinda sorta sends messages while shoving the important pieces of the app away with banner ads that take up > 30% of the app's real estate".

So far, the UI is mostly really small icons on circular buttons, mostly at the bottom, with a couple at the top. No ads. Doesn't feel totally windowsy, but its definitely a little closer than, say, spotify.
Also, it rotates when my phone does, to a different UI configuration that makes more sense sideways. Instantly. None of this wp8 FREEZE FOR TEN SECONDS when the orientation changes.

Wait, you were talking about the Windows Phone version?!?
Hmm.... Well technically if it was UWP it should be the same even on Desktop, so all might not be lost...
-
@FrostCat When they say that they mean "we fired the team or the team working on it refused to continue because it was crap. We were unable to recruit replacements."

I run 'disk cleanup' (which is cleanmgr.exe) all the time to kill windows.old with no issues. You have to click the 'Clean up system files' to be able to select the correct option.

The screenshots for the desktop version looked nice, but yeah, I can't say how different it is. And a banner ad wouldn't surprise me at all.

Objection. Assumes facts not in evidence.
"My truck failed to boot" does not imply "the computer I put in my truck failed to boot." Therefore, we had no basis from which to assume the existence of such a computer.

In fact, this was my original thought, and was really confused as to how he got to work at all. Thought it meant one of the computer components in the engine had died.

Well unfortunately I can't do that anymore because the FS is really starting to crap itself and I can't boot from that disk anymore, so . All I remember is looking for that option several times over the last year and it never being there...

Accepted, I could have worded it better. Or I could @lucas1 you all and assume you've heard me talk about how I was building a computer in my vehicle of choice over the years.
