Let me introduce you to the world of German cell phone providers, where even 300MB is fucking expensive.
Wow. The cheapest pay-as-you-go provider I could find gives me 500MB…

@lucas1 said in Strategy Letter VI (Joel on Software):
@Luhmann I have a contract from the days when H+ was new, unlimited data, unlimited texts, unlimited phone minutes.
My phone could do 4G but I would have to settle for 25 Gig a month. I am not giving this contract up until the data caps are removed again (the contract is over 2 years old now).
You can straight-up buy a new phone (that works with your carrier, of course) and keep your current service plan. It costs a little more up front (you don't get the "free/cheap" phone with a new contract), but you save more in the long run (no exceeded data limit charges).
-
@dkf My current contract includes 300MB, and an additional 300MB cost 6€. Which means 25 Gig would be 500€ under my current contract.

25 Gig and you're complaining? Let me introduce you to the world of German cell phone providers, where even 300MB is fucking expensive.
I couldn't even dream of unlimited data for under 500€ in my wet dreams.
Lebara has 10 hrs 50 GB for 100 DKK/month, in Denmark. I think i Got an offer that allowed me to use all of that in the nordics and germany.
-
@swayde Maybe it's time for me to switch providers. BASE "only" charges 5€ per Gig.
-
@asdf said in Strategy Letter VI (Joel on Software):

That's still expensive as fuck. ( for the record, don't even consider lebara, check trustpilot)
usablein germany, free everything Else in dk.
Ah, they limit the non domestic data to 10gb.
-
@swayde Congratulations on your country's internet prices not being abusively high.
Meanwhile here in almost every other country, internet connectivity is provided by an oligopoly of 3, maybe 4 companies who charge as much as you can charge without people literally rioting, since they have no possible competition.

@lordofduct said in Strategy Letter VI (Joel on Software):
If that's so... hey @blakeyrat , don't you know calling yourself "American" is offensive to all the other countries located in the Americas. Fucking insensitive asshole.
Why?
If he's in an American country, then he is American?
Is it offensive to call an African, African?
-
@lucas1 said in Strategy Letter VI (Joel on Software):
Really relevant. Mobile networks over there is mega important.
The speed is important to THEM, yes.
But, in those cases, developers that target 3rd world countries will deal with those problems, wouldn't they?
Also, unless these 3rd world countries are going to be forever fixed in that state of technology, than the concept still applies, it's just further delayed.
In a sense, the prediction is a sort of tautology, because this is just how business works. Business won't solve a problem until it becomes a need. If they're fine targeting only 1st world, then they aren't going to bother worrying about limitations.
-
@blakeyrat said in Strategy Letter VI (Joel on Software):
Why not make this place as annoying as possible to post in.
Probably because you fill that niche so well.

@Polygeekery Burros are for cargo. It's a rainforest, I ride in a velociraptor, knife in my teeth, protecting our gold from greedy white men.
-
@clippy fool! don't tell the white men about the gold!

burroburrito in Brazil?I'm hungry

@xaade said in Strategy Letter VI (Joel on Software):
Is it offensive to call an African, African?
It's only offensive if they don't identify as African. If you call some Brazilian guy who moved to Kentucky "African-American", I'm sure quite a few people would be offended.

Didn't think I'd ever say this, but even Switzerland has cheaper data plans than that. And nothing is ever cheaper in Switzerland.
-
@djls45 In the UK we have "Sim only" contracts and that is what I am doing :D

Do you actually use 25GB a month?
Three still do all you can eat unlimited data. Some of the virtual operators too (GiffGaff recently stopped or made it more expensive but there are others)

@Jaloopa I've regularly used about 15gb as I tend to tether a lot, so it is getting there.

OK... not sure what that means.
Maybe look up what country has a Riot Act.
OK... Great Britain, 1714, in response to civil disturbances through out early 18th century England.
Is it because the US incorporated parts of the riot act into the militia act of 1792?
That's a really weird and vague reference.

I agree, I was attempting sarcasm (I guess I failed), poking fun at the insinuation that blakey is an SJW. It's a common stereotype that SJW's refer to the usage of the term 'American' as the identifier for US citizens is exclusionary of other countries within the Americas.
I don't necessarily think it's offensive.

OHHH, SNAP. Bet it took a whole two seconds to look up the answer to that one.

Because their inhabitants are smart enough to remember what continent they are on?

Because geography isn't required in the sorts of "studies" courses they take.

@blakeyrat said in Strategy Letter VI (Joel on Software):
@Jarry It's just so fucking frustrating. You don't need to give counter-examples to a generalization.
And if you'd actually traveled all around South America, I'd think you'd be the one applauding my effort to get these numbskulls to think of the world outside their tiny little first-world mindset to think about the other 5 billion people in the world.
But whatever. Go into a forum and correct all the generalizations. Why not make this place as annoying as possible to post in. Knock yourself out.
I actually have lived in South America. More than 10 years ago, I spent a couple years in various different parts of Argentina. I don't think I ever once saw a dialup modem, and it's difficult to believe that technological progression would have gone backwards over the last decade plus...

@boomzilla we should call Mexico "The States"

Statian, USian, Unitey

Looks too much like Stalin. Communists not welcome.
@clippy said in Strategy Letter VI (Joel on Software):

In Spanish they say estadounidense, which literally translates as "unitedstatesian".

I've always went with my state name when identifying myself.
I'm a Connecticunt, from just over the Mass line where my Masshole brother lives. I've since moved to Florida, where after years of being here, my Connectikyke friends say I'm no longer a Connectishit, and my Floridian friends have officially adopted me as Floridian.
I've also lived in Maine with the Mainiacs, Washington with the Washingtonians, and California with the fucking assholes.

That'd be pretty weird to call yourself "FLian" or "CTian" or "NYian"...

@lordofduct
Examples of white people trying to figure out what would offend a person from the continent of South America, without asking them. This is ALSO a stereotype. Therefore, presuming what is a microaggression....
... is a microaggression.
Went to China.
Chinese man walked up and asked if I was American.
He wasn't interested in if I was Brazilian.
-
@xaade - I'm unclear what you're getting at here.
What are you trying to tell me?

@xaade - I'm unclear what you're getting at here.

@lordofduct Two approaches to the concept that saying one is "American" is offensive.
-
Isn't assuming a people group would be offended, especially if that person doesn't belong to a people group, using a broad brush, creating a stereotype, etc. That seems to be hypocrisy to me.
-
When I actually visited foreigners, they seemed to be ok with and understand that "American" refers to US Citizen. And what a mouthful, right? One would think US-American would work? USian, however stupid, would at least be functional in conversation. "A citizen of the US" doesn't work at all...
Hi, yes, I'd like to order the All-Citizen-of-the-US-ian burger.
