I often wonder if there is anything that Kevin Sorbo wouldn't make better.

Kevin Sorbo is the very soul of goodness.

Maybe. I'm trying to keep an open mind. Perhaps his fursona's a Shetland pony or a wombat.
It's probably a bunny girl though.

@FrostCat So draw me one you lazy fucker.

Hopefully that's not too anime for you.

Status: Maybe time to get a new phone. I've had a cheap dumb phone for use as a phone and an old, non-phone mobile device for smart phone-ish stuff where WiFi is available. However, my phone seems to not want to be a phone any more. I've been blaming T-Mobile for inexplicable, very intermittent network coverage, but I now seem to have 0 bars, all the time, everywhere; I don't think that's T-Mobile's fault. (Probably dropped the phone one too many times.) And the iPod's screen, the glass of which has been cracked for a long time, is starting to develop a couple of bad spots in the LCD.
I am now willing to entertain recommendations for an inexpensive, low-end smart phone.

How about a Windows Phone?

@FrostCat You suck at that.

@aliceif He said a smart phone.

There are some pretty good Android devices made by various Chinese manufacturers. (I'm just in the process of getting one at the moment.) I don't know what you're looking for exactly so I won't give recommendations, but there's plenty of sites that make getting these things easy and you can do very well for not very much outlay.
I don't recommend getting a phone as part of a network contract deal if you can afford to just buy a phone instead. Or at least I don't for anyone in the EU; no idea about the situation in the US. (I hear you savages still allow totally locking a phone to one provider!)
-
$120 unlocked LG G3?

I don't blame you; I don't know what I'm looking for, yet, myself. I just figured out that the problem seems to be my phone, not T-Mobile, last night.

Yeah, I've been happy with the T-Mobile pay-as-you-go plan that I've had with the dumb phone for the last few years: $30/month for not-unlimited-but-more-than-I-actually-use talk and text; very limited data, but with the dumb phone, I've never had any need for any data.
-
@blakeyrat said in The Official Status Thread:

Was that a surprise? You've seen stuff I've put together before. I've never claimed to have any meaningful amount of graphical talent.
I actually thought about putting a request on fiverr, but I figured it'd take too long.
-
@dkf said in The Official Status Thread:

Only if it's bought that way. You can certainly order an unlocked one, as long as you're sure it'll work with your carrier.

I have two SIMs in my phone, one for talk+text and the other for data. Total cost is rather less than that $30/month…

Good luck finding anything less than $30/month in the US. I have that because it was the cheapest plan of any kind from any carrier that I could find at the time. There might be something cheaper, but the difference won't be significant (unless, maybe, it's something like a family-and-emergency-only plan for the elderly; I think those exist).

o/
my last bill was for 28.75 USD.
it's usually closer to 25 USD but it was a heavier than average data month.
i've got a bill coming through in 5 days for July that given my current rate of data usage should be about 26.12 USD thanks to my data refund fron the June period.

FreedomPop and Republic Wireless come immediately to mind. Both have limitations, of course.
-
Status: My code from yesterday is now tested and seems to be working. It's copying the data to the right place, generating the metadata right, and registering it into the metadata repository sensibly. Only one true mistake found in testing, and that was due to flipping the sense of a boolean test. A single character delta commit later and everything was fine.

Sagely advice. Cheap high end chinese phones aren't too bad thought.

If you're careful and don't need super high end specs, that's not really true any more. Winphones have had decent performance on the lower end for some time, and some cheap Androids are perfectly cromulent nowadays.

@DogsB I upgraded from my 1st gen Moto G to a Moto X play. I seriously doubt I'll be buying any more £700 handsets when the £200-300 range is so good

That's why I bought a fairly high-end tablet; my next phone probably will be something significantly cheaper, now that the US is moving away from the old massively-subsidized-for-2-year-commitment model. I don't wanna spend $600-800 on a damn phone.
-
For $200 you can take your NUC out of its frumpy case and slap it into a fanless aluminum one that's all heat sink. The assembly manual is hilarous. The case is packed with short extender cables because it's significantly larger than the mainboard.
-
@FrostCat Hell, the Droid Turbo 2 hasn't even been out for a year and you can already get it for ~$300 used. It was $600 MSRP
-
@JazzyJosh Well, I can't get one (without switching phone companies). Also I don't like buying phones used.

A variant of this, most likely: KitKat-based, 4" screen.
