TL;DR Proposed "rifle" emoji dropped from official list of emojis because
At the time, the BBC reported that a British gun control campaign group had criticised the proposal, saying it was "offensive" to gun injury victims.
TIL That a Winchester type repeating rifle is a hunting rifle. This image was included in the article:
With the following caption:The hunting rifle was one of dozens of new emojis proposed last year
-
But we still have this one:
-
@loose Is a picture of a hunting rifle actually the kind of thing that really needs adding to the online vocabulary of the kind of rabid 15 year old weasel most likely to use it?
-
@flabdablet It's not so much the need or otherwise for the rifle, it's more the reason "why" as to not having it. Yes, it is a picture of a rifle - but it's not actually doing anything. And yes there is a pistol - but that seems ok. Whilst I have not done any specific research, there are a lot of "violent" emojis out there. But I guess that because they are not "real" they can't trigger anything

You know as well as I do that if rifle emojis were to become available, 80%+ of instances of their use would be to add emphasis to threatening and harassing messages. See THANKS JONATHAN in the clip above.
If it doesn't already exist, what useful purpose is served by adding it?

If that’s a valid reason, should we also get and similar banned because some people may have mental scars caused by acid house music?

what? Nobody forbids you from adding a clipart of a rifle to your post.

Is a picture of a levitating man in a business suit the kind of thing that really needs an emoji?
Is anyone so mentally weak that an emoji of a gun could....what's the concern here? That they could snap and find a gun and go on a shooting spree? That they'd be triggered by it?
Rejecting this icon sounds like voodoo.
-
@FrostCat But already exists.
-
@aliceif I'm failing to see your point, unless it's "we only 'need' one gun-related emoji"? Even though revolvers, pistols, and long guns[1] are different things?
[1] and that completely ignores the differences between, say, rifles and shotguns.
-
@FrostCat I am saying that
- Nobody is banning guns from text conversations
- Nobody removed the existing gun emoji
- All this misrepresentation of facts and fearmongering about "SJW"s gets on my nerves.

Except the "fearmongering" is a reaction to stuff that's actually happening. Both in the article and here:

Seriously guys, WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THE WORLD? Why the hell does anyone even care whether there's a hunting rifle emoji or not? It doesn't restrict your freedom of speech, the world will not end and Hitler won't come back from his grave because of this.
Someone suggested an emoji. Someone else questioned whether it's appropriate. As a consequence, it won't be standardized. THAT'S ALL THAT HAPPENED. Yes, people want to talk about hunting online. But people also talk about sex online, and nobody is outraged because there's no penis, vagina, PIV, gay sex and lesbian sex emoji. Despite the fact that sexting is much more common than hunting discussions.
I don't want to turn this into a huge political discussion, because this is so absolutely ridiculous, but it looks like some people are just looking for reasons to be outraged. Funnily enough, that's also exactly what they accuse their enemy, the "SJW"s, of.
-
My opinion is, as always, screw emoji, I got my ASCII emoticons and art, I'm good, if you want custom emoticons on your platform, go wild, you don't need emoji for that, ICQ, MSN and similar managed just fine without them.
-
What is this emoji everyone speaks of?
-
@Onyx just as a clarification, my main gripe is this shit is not platform specific, it's getting added to Unicode. IMHO, it went far enough, we're already beyond the original scope of emoji we needed to keep old messages readable, stop adding new shit!

It's kind of funny, though, that you're outraged at the people outraged at the people who got outraged in the first place.
End the cycle of outrage!

Yup.
Of course the correct question to ask is why should some completely legal and proper words be banned from the online world? The 15 year old probably watched lots of porn and action movies anyways.
-
Interesting new info:
The rifle does still have a codepoint and you are free to create a font where it is depicted as a pretty picture of a rifle!

Right next to a "vomiting face" emoji. What if I've been a victim of a terrible burrito poisoning? DIDN'T THINK OF THAT, HUH? HUH?

Many, Many, Lots of years ago there was a Very British sjw, in only the
the theway that the British could in those days, called Mary Whitehouse. IIRC she (or somebody very like her) wanted to ban Tom and Jerry cartoons from UK TV because: ...they were so violent... ...that the children watching them would try to emulate it... Common sense eventually prevailed with the argument that children could tell the difference. Occasionally it gets re-visited.EDIT: the the the sorry, the needle got stuck, then jumped.

I think you've got a bit too much of a hair trigger on this.
Look, there's 86 smilies, ridiculous stuff like "man in business suit levitating", 5 skin color modifiers for smilies, etc., etc., but a second gun, oh no! That's a bridge too far, for no reason anyone can articulate except for reasons that happen to be things you don't like?
-

I've been trying not to sound outraged. The idea that "we don't need another [x] emoji" is dumb, on the face of it, given the number of silly ones there already are.
-
@aliceif said in Emojis - They are coming to get you. Or PC gone mad:

I really don't understand why so many people have this need for censoring. I mean, there is an object, there are icons that people use, people would like to insert an icon representing the object into their conversations -- what seems to be the problem?

Censoring? You can still talk about rifles, and, in media that support images, insert pictures of rifles.
Sorry, but I don't see your point.
And as I said, the existing gun emoji didn't get touched.
Oh and the rifle is STILL PART OF UNICODE. It's just not categorized as an emoji.
And it was always meant to be a sports rifle, not a normal rifle.
But hey, let's ignore that in favor of OMG EVIL SJWs STEALING OUR PRETTY PICTURES WE HAVE TO DEFEND OUR RIGHTS!!!!!

You were also the first to bring up defending rights.
People thinking it's a ridiculous reason to drop an emoji is not tantamount to "tey took ar gurns".
You're the one who's rising it to this level by asserting that's what's going on.
Sorry to tell ya, but people can point and laugh with out have their panties in a bunch over it.
-
@aliceif hey, calm down, why get so emotional?
Censoring, because the reason for the decision was "it's inappropriate". If the reason was "we don't have time for this shit" or "we're not going to introduce it now because we've better things to do" -- ok. But this way it's very close to censorship, especially if you look at it as @flabdablet wants us to.

Nope. "Censorship" and "banning" were said by other people first.

I think that Apple's argumentation was ridiculous, and it actually having an effect on Unicode 9.0 even more so, but it's not "banning" or "censoring" anything.

How the fuck is anyone convincing the Unicode consortium to add new emoji anyway? The Unicode standard was imagined as something to enable us to use all existing languages and have access to all characters used to write them. It was always descriptive.
Now, it seems like we're forcing new characters into the standard and fighting about potential uses of a character that doesn't even exist yet? Seriously?

Unicode was a good thing. Not perfect by any means, but we needed a universal standard to end the clusterfuck of code pages et al. But now it's like they can't stop.
Can we have an intervention for the Unicode Consortium?
