Amazon FIIIIIIIRE

PROBLEM:
Video gamez doesn't hit network often enough; phone internet sharing frequently times-out while I'm playing gamez.
SOLUTION:
Play Amazon Cloud Player Music Thingy while playing.
-
That used to happen to people all the time on dialup--back then the simplest thing to do was configure an email checker to check your mail every 5 minutes. People wrote applications that were basically nothing but a
traysystem notification area icon.
-
Holy shit, I'm playing around with Amazon's app store and to their credit they comp you a SHITLOAD of free games if you own a Fire tablet. Some of them are like... actual games. Like Knights of the Old Republic, or Sonic CD. AND A SHITLOAD OF AWFUL HIDDEN ITEM GAMES YESSSSSSS
I might need to figure out how to output this thing to HDMI so I can do a let's play of "horse pose tool". WHICH IS FREE BTW!

Holy shit, I'm playing around with Amazon's app store and to their credit they comp you a SHITLOAD of free games if you own a Fire tablet.
Are those Amazon Underground games? (I think that's what they called it.)
-
Yeah you get the game for free, and if the game has micro-transactions you get a stipend (I guess?) each day of the in-game currency.
I'm trying to figure out how these app developers make their cha-ching from the deal. Surely something's in it for them or they wouldn't sign up...
-
Whoa, Amazon sends you an email receipt for each app you download, that's a lot of spam, hahaha. I queued up like 30 of 'em.

Amazon pays developers a small amount of money for each minute of use by users, apparently: "the gist of it is that developers will be paid 1 penny for every 5 minutes an Underground customer is using their app."
-

Yep. Very rarely you will get a $0.99 credit for MP3s. I've gotten...two?...of those.
-
But the money comes from... where? Maybe the cheap ad-supported Fire? That doesn't seem like it adds up at all.
Or is Amazon subsidizing Fire with other parts of their store? That seems... barely ethical.
-
They appear to be simply taking a loss to promote the store.
-

I almost guarantee that's exactly what they're doing. And barely ethical fits Amazon disturbingly well...
-
Well it's working. Google ain't gave me shit for free.
-
Well it's working. Google ain't gave me shit for free.
You must be doing it wrong. Google's offered me a free Katy Perry album and another one I can't remember.
-
-
horse pose tool
Huh. It's apparently $7 non-prime. Must be the free-app-of-the-day.
Quick search indicates there's one for cats, people, and anime too! So, like, a virtual mannequin?
-
Yeah it's sold as an art tool, but I thought it was funny.
-
I thought it was funny.
Yeah. I'm sure you can milk ten minutes out of it.
Edit: fscking Engine. Good gosh why....
-
-
Could be worse, Apple gave everyone a U2 album...
-
I remember that; loads* of people up in arms because they got free music sent to servers that had iTunes installed, and they were so low on disk space the album filled the drive
*OK, some; was still funny
-
This was my favourite take on that:
-
servers that had iTunes installed
That there is TRWTF. Clearly the "server" was therefore "converted to a workstation"?

So Blakey, now that you have an Android, there's a Humble Mobile Bundle going for RPGs. Are any of them not shit?
-
I haven't played any of them but they all look anime as shit.
-
This site seems to actually work OK in silk (Amazon's browser), probably because Atwood doesn't known about it and so it doesn't get put in mobile mode.
-
>it doesn't get put in mobile mode.
Because it works so well on desktop!
-
While I got the thing out and am bored on the bus, Amazon fire stuffs:
-
I never knew flash memory could be slow until I got this device. It makes a 5400 RPM mobile drive seem like a Ferrari.
-
no Swype typing 😠. I know you can download it for android but amazon should just install it for me, sommuch better than typing
-
the "thus USB plug is low power warning strays on the screen hours after you unplugged it from the USB hub. Why!? Nobody in QA noticed that bug?
-
-
Try on WinPhokne and you will know THE PAIN.
-
I do on occasion, but mostly I avoid it because of said pain. All I'm saying is, the best you can hope for with this mess is... no, can't think of anything.
-
All I'm saying is, the best you can hope for with this mess is
A swift migration to NodeBB?

I can never tell how anime they are. I don't know if it's the artists, or the Android store, or the Bundle website-- but fucking everything has these generic-as-shit anime characters as the game's bubble. Even if the game doesn't have any anime in it, whatsoever, at all. I don't know if it's some dumb marketing thing, or if there's only a single title-card artist employed by the entire game industry.
-
Additional notes:
- Thing has good fuel economy. I spent a sold hour and change playing music and simultaneously surfing the web, playing video games (Sonic Rush or whatever-- kind of boring), and it still was at 72% battery.

Oh man. The fire is a better kindle than my kindle. But I love my kindle. What do I do!?!?!?
-
Buy the expensive Fire--best of both worlds. Unless you mean one of those weird paper-white Kindles.
-
No I have an old school e-ink Kindle, second generation Kindle. (Alas, I missed my chance to buy the first generation one that looked somehow like a portable Commodore 128.)
-
old school e-ink Kindle, second generation Kindle
I have a 3rd generation "Keyboard" one. Recently got a book auto-downloaded to it that says they'll upgrade it for me (it's an OS update put out in 2012 or something from what I gather).
I have to wonder if the upgrade will break the "jailbreak" on it...
-
no Swype typing 😠. I know you can download it for android but amazon should just install it for me, sommuch better than typing
I have the 8.9, and it's there under Settings > Keyboard > Trace Typing. Unless you mean Swype in particular.
-
I have to wonder if the upgrade will break the "jailbreak" on it...
yes.
but good news! unlike Apple, amazon won't brick your device for jailbreaking it! the update just restores it to unjailbroken status.
-
?
You mean they ship it but don't TURN IT ON? WTF, Amazon.
-
Why would you jail brake a Kindle anyway? It already supports reading like 7 different DRM-free formats, if you just wanted to steal books.
-
Why would you jail brake a Kindle anyway?
for me? because my e-ink kindle didn't support epub books that i had bought elsewhere.
then i learned how to convert them to a format the kindle understood and stopped caring, when the next update unjailbroke the kindle i left it stock because i was no longer reading epubs on it.
and for all i know (i havent looked because i stopped buying epubs and all my old ones are converted now) it actually properly supports epubs now.

According to Wikipedia,
epub
s are not supported, even by the latest Kindles
