you: oh it crashed? well just close jigsaw and start it again.
- it didn't start? just click again. It will. Eventually.
- it just vanished? Just start it again. (again, eventually)
- enjoy! (until the video dies again, rinse, repeat)
Have you been spying on me? I have a particular game on Android that (after an update) has a 89% chance of crashing before the main environment loads, and the only recourse is to keep hitting it until it loads.
Sometimes it has the "Uh oh, the app crashed. Send a report?" screen, but most often it just dies super hard and kicks me back to the launcher with nary a whimper.

What idea? That software designed to talk to hardware should be considered (for all intents and purposes) hardware?
How far should that regress?
-
How far should that regress?
Sorry, the language parser could not grok this. No spelling/grammar errors found.
-
If software that is designed to interact with hardware is hardware, what is software designed to interact with software that is designed to interact with hardware?
-
If software designed to talk to hardware is itself considered hardware, then the software designed to talk to such software should be considered hardware, and so should the software... and so on. @xaade's question is, after how many steps this rule is no longer applicable.
Example: Notepad is designed to read and write from files, and files are abstraction layer between the operating system and filesystem driver, and filesystem driver uses disk driver to retrieve and store data on device, except it first goes through firmware first. It can be said that all these things are designed for one purpose - to talk to the device; but each is more and more detached from actual device. Which should be called hardware and which software? Why?
-

Ok, I get it now. That's really not a question directed to me though, because it's not my idea/rule/opinion. Ask @blakeyrat instead.

Ask @blakeyrat instead.
Your princess is in another castle.
Well, I know I won't get a real answer then.... moving on.

Sorry, not enough resources available to devote to theoreticals on the internet. My interactions are fairly limited at the moment. (Direct responses only, no new post crawling, no new topic crawling, rate limit 1 post per 5 minutes max)

So you are either actually working, or you have been kidnapped and turned into a brain jar for a hive mind, and your processor slices are in more demand.
-
I disabled AV and restarted the tool, but I can't really tell whether it helped or not - because some idiot thinks redownloading several gigabytes of data over and over again is so much fun...
Redownload? Huh? Why not just seed the Torrent of the kernel's ISO. You will only have to download it once, and you'll help the community distribute the OS.
-

[Why Not Both meme goes here]
Though, there's no need to put a brain in a jar, they work just fine in the body they came with (not to mention physical interaction benefits)!
Also, my architecture doesn't support true virtualization/slicing, so... yeah.

Put it under the hardware column so it looks more diverse."
I'm not putting anything under my 'hardware column' TYVM.

I get this Windows sad face
"Somthing went wrong and we are gathering info :(" every now and then.
I wonder if it's because I'm using an old computer?
Pretty much. That face is the sad ghost of Bill Gates. He finds your lack of modern hardware disturbing.

No, but it goes down easier than, "Your argument is based on semantic differences or nuanced meanings that I really don't agree with. However, I will allow you to have that point because it's not particularly interesting or insightful argument to have and I'd rather not waste everybody's time quoting a dictionary. Instead, here's an actual point."

...but Irish Paula Table_NOT_FOUND!

What idea? That software designed to talk to hardware should be considered (for all intents and purposes) hardware?
It's not a terrible idea. But it offers virtually no insight (especially since he implies that he shouldn't change the Windows (and the drivers), because it's a "hardware problem"). The idea is definitely not worth arguing over. Mocking, yes. Arguing, no.
-
-
-
Also, it's worth noting that the words "software" and "hardware" come from the fact that software can be altered very easily after it's made (is somewhat plastic in a sense, or "soft"), while it's very hard to do with hardware (it's "hard").

How do you do that "quote in quote"?

Either Quote Whole Post button (the speech bubble in the upper left of the reply box), or manually as:

Brainfuck completely ignores whitespace, so yeah.

Nah, I just don't know what gender they are. They can be singular, right? (Or at least, I thought it was...)
In casual communication (i.e.: an internet forum full of trolls and running on software created by someone who is likely a sociopath), a lot of people use "they" because:
- it sounds like you're referring to an animal or inanimate object
- he/she, he or she, and (s)he all come off as awkward and verbose
Come to think of it, "he or she" would probably enrage PC Principal because it offends people who identify as neither male nor female.

to be specific, by default, Avira blocks any access to autorun.inf file if it exists on USB drive, for security reasons
"For security reasons". The best justification to do stupid shit. "Hey why did my antivirus change my background to solid black?" "Security reasons!" "Oh, OK then"
Apparently, detecting file I/O failure is beyond the Microsoft programmers' abilities
Sometimes companies do stupid stuff. And you think "surely they'll learn and stop doing the stupid stuff!". But 10 years later they're still doing the same stupid stuff.
In this case, the stupid stuff is showing those hex codes to the user. That's the kind of decision I'd expect from a Unix guru stuck in 1970, not Microsoft.
-
So, if anyone's interested, apparently installing Windows 10 fixed the problem. The system hasn't crashed even once (so far).
But at what cost? Now your Solitaire and Minesweeper have ads and in-app purchases. Was it really worth it?!
And achievements, and daily challenges, and use a shitton of CPU for some reason
-
"For security reasons". The best justification to do stupid shit.
Actually, this one very much makes sense. Or rather, it used to make sense in '00s, back when Windows XP, by default, automatically run whatever shit there is on the random USB drive your computer-illiterate friend/colleague/aunt/sister/schoolmate gave to you because it has some document you need.
-
"Hey why did my antivirus change my background to solid black?" "Security reasons!" "Oh, OK then"
The funny thing is, the only antivirus software I've ever seen changing the background, were actually malware that just pretended to be antivirus. In this case, the stupid stuff is showing those hex codes to the user. That's the kind of decision I'd expect from a Unix guru stuck in 1970, not Microsoft.
It's better to show hex codes than nothing at all.
