Yahoo's Business Model: Asshattery Indistinguishable From Malware
-
While following the story of Yahoo possibly selling off their internet business, a all by itself, I came across this.
Next time you're prompted to update the Java software on your computer, pay attention or you might become a Yahoo user without realizing it.
The search company has cut a deal with Oracle to promote Yahoo search alongside future updates to Oracle's Java technology. Starting this month, when users are prompted to update to the next version of Java, they'll be asked if they want to make Yahoo their default search engine on Chrome and Internet Explorer.
The box to reply in the affirmative will be checked by default, the Wall Street Journal reported, so those not paying attention might find themselves using Yahoo search even if they didn't mean to.
-
Well it
workeddidn't work for Ask so why behave any differently?
-
Only yahoos use Java anyway
-
-
Isn't Java notorious for pulling this shit anyway? I always pay close attention to the installer's prompts.

i stopped using the gava installer/updater. i use
apt-get
orchocolatey
depending on which applies to my current platform these days.because belgium that noise.
-
Also, I actually had a topic related to the prompt. They fucking broke the radio buttons, conveniently in a way that made it even more likely that you'll accidentally install the shit from Yahoo.

I can honestly say that I have never used the gava installer/updater.

I use ninite
ninite works too. i like the nuget/apt-get like interface for chocolatey

If you're installing Java on your machine, you already have Malware.
And since Java is also a malware installer, you'll get moar Malware after the first malware-installing site you visit (ie: any that are running ads).
-
Is this a replacement or an addition to the fucking Ask toolbar it already installs?
-
I have java installed to access my corporate vpn (OK, also because I develop in java). I have it set up with Firefox, because I don't use that browser for anything but starting up the vpn. But I have 64-bit Linux, and Juniper don't play that. So the firewall doesn't actually run with Java. It gives me some errors, but I found a workaround to make their shared object runnable and I start it up with a cookie that my browser gets.
Oh, and I get several errors from java. Best case, just complaining that it's 64-bits and it can't interface with a 32-bit library. Worst case, something crashes. In theory it's java, and I have to reload the page to move things along. But then, when this happens, there's a java process pegging one processor.
But it doesn't matter, I just
killall java
now once I connect.
Filed Under: tl;dr;
-
One of the customer's networks I connect to has a browser-based VPN portal that starts a Java launcher.
Thankfully, there's also an ActiveX version, so I still have a far more secure and stable option.

Which option gets Oracle more money?

The third one: add even more of this malware crap.

LOL. Well, I should also mention that I only do this from within a VM.
-
Too bad I also have to code for Android so Java is needed.
And no, no budget is poured for IDE so I have to use Android Studio instead of hoping for Xamarin + Visual Studio.

oh, you mean that damn java browser plugin? i disable that damn thing and ake sure it stays disabled regularly. and any application i catch reenabling it gets uninstalled without ceremopny never to return.
if openjdk had a windows build i would use that instead in a heartbeat, and if minecraft ever has a build that does not require java to run i'll uninstall the damn thing too
-
Congratulations, you're in luck!
-
Congratulations, you're in luck!
cool. is it compatible with vanilla 1.8.8 multiplayer servers?
-
Sadly no; it's only compatible with other Windows 10 Minecrafts, and in a month or two Xbox One Minecrafts. It's a from-the-ground-up rewrite and not quite at that level yet.

ah. well then it's useless to me as i play minecraft exclusively mulitplayer with friends
i built this and this and i'm not abandoning them!
also my friends built other stuff that you'll find if you play around with that map.

This isn't new (well, the Yahoo bit might be) - originally it was the Ask Toolbar;
Since when did Oracle need this much money to prostitute their (shit) technology in this way?
(on reflection; I guess Oracle is the pimp, and Ask/Yahoo is the prostitute in this scenario)
- Bonus - a user-facing URL with a ".xml" suffix (where's the I-hate-Oracle category...?)

No, it's more like a couple AIDS-infested sociopaths who lure people into dank hotel rooms with the promise of sex, then chloroform them, dump them in a bathtub of ice and steal their organs.
Then you wake up to find a message written on the mirror that says "CALL 911 WE TOOK YOUR KIDNEY. ALSO WELCOME TO AIDS". Except it's hard to read because it was written by someone with A HOOK HAND!!!!!
-
I updated Java on OS X yesterday and I got prompted if I wanted to set Yahoo! as my default search engine and home page in both Chrome and Safari... of course not!
Looks like this stuff has crept beyond Windows now :(
-
Well, Yahoo is still an upgrade from Ask. In fact, Yahoo search is just a wrapper for Bing, so it's in fact the second-best search engine.
Yahoo is a bunch of incompetent morons. They could have become a serious competitor to Google in terms of online services but instead they essentially became a news portal.
-

I wonder why there aren't any functional third-party Java implementations? It's an open standard after all.
There are dozens of JVM implemetations but nothing that fully replaces Oracle's stuff and comes prepackaged for Windows.
-

In yonder years, when I finally got access to this "Internet" thing Yahoo was the only search engine I knew of. The damned thing took 2 minutes to load on my modem. After I found out about Google I pretty much switched to that only because it was freaking fast and to the point.
-

Cos the original java unit tests were opensource but when Oracle took it on they announced that the tests were Oracle's IP and would sue the poop out of anyone who tried to use them.
So, overnight it became impossible to guarantee that your JVM would be 100% compatible. Our favourite was jrockit which was, ironically, also hoovered up by the Oracle Evil Empire.
-
Do they have any legal basis for that, or is just threats and bullying?
I suppose someone could fork the entire Java project (the GPLd parts), give it a new name and absorb the Oracle lawsuits for everyone else. But there's little incentive for that. So I guess Java is as good as dead. Congratulations Oracle?
-

Actually I believe it's also compatible with the Android one, too, because it is[1] the Android version.
[1] more or less.
-
they essentially became a news portal.
Did they? not as bad as I thought, good for them.
-
I was trying to find the news stories, but it was from a few years back.
Unfortunately, they have a very strong legal basis and Oracle is not the company you want to be pissing off in that respect.

Because that's not at all illegal in the EU, amirite?
Incoming fines in 3 .. 2 .. 1 ..

Because that's not at all illegal in the EU, amirite?
Depends on whether they judged to be acting in a monopolistic manner. I somehow doubt that they've ever been in that position; I can name a few very large companies who would strongly protest that Oracle's not got a monopoly at all.
-
Depends on whether they judged to be acting in a monopolistic manner.
No it doesn't.
This touches on EU cookie law, which handles a great deal more than just cookies. It generally forbids reading or writing of data from or to a user's device without explicit prior consent when the read/write action and/or the read/written data is not strictly required to facilitate the core functioning of the software the user is running. Opt-out is not explicit consent and therefore is not allowed, period.A change of the currently registered default search engine can also be seen as a (free of charge) subscription, which is also not allowed to be opt-in.
-
Opt-out is not explicit consent and therefore is not allowed, period.
In this case, it also depends on which of the many different download packages you get. Some are infested with adware; others aren't.

Two FYIs for people using Windows and need to install/update Java:
- If you have Java installed already, go to the control panel, find Java, go to Advanced Options. Check "Suppress sponsor offers when installing or updating Java".
The corresponding registry keys for this areHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft
and (on 64-bit Windows)HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\JavaSoft
... set theSPONSORS
String property to"DISABLE"
on these keys - The JRE installer on the Java Standard Edition download site doesn't have the adware in the installer.

I need mods, and there's no (and probably never will be) Forge build for that version. So... yeahhhhh no.
oh, you mean that damn java browser plugin? i disable that damn thing and ake sure it stays disabled regularly. and any application i catch reenabling it gets uninstalled without ceremopny never to return.
Yeah. It's off, disabled, automatically blocked, etc. If you're trying to make me use Java on the web today... well... I'll look elsewhere.
-
Well, after googling, TIL this exists
I have no idea how well it works, but it seems like it should be about as successful as OpenJDK on Linux?
-
Well, I haven't installed Sunracle Java for like 8 years now and the stuff I tried running with OpenJDK worked. How well it works on Windows, that I don't know.

Send a bomb to Oracle offices? Even if they trace it back you'll be dead anyway, so no worries.
