The end for Konami?
-
Continuing the discussion from The beginning of the end for Blizzard?:
I'd be more concerned over Konami instead of Blizzard. In fact, I think I'll go create a new topic about that.
So, in case you hadn't heard, Konami's new CEO has declared that 'Mobile is where the future lies'. He doesn't mean making AAA titles, either. He's referring to the nickel-and-dime microtransactions kind of game.
I guess this isn't a surprise, seeing as how Konami has been alienating its talent in recent years... most notably Koji Igarashi (aka IGA) and Hideo Kojima. These two were the producers of the Castlevania and Metal Gear franchises respectively.
Kojima was also working on the next Silent Hill game, which, thanks to its Playable Teaser, had reached massive amounts of hype well before it was due to be released. The game is now canceled and its demo purged from PSN.
So, is Konami doomed? What other companies will follow the same path? (CapCom, I'm looking at you)
-
-
Well, I don't blame them, everybody knows PCs (and by extension consoles) are dead!
-
Koji Igarashi (aka IGA)
Speaking of, I kind of want to back Igavania Bloodlines or whatever it's called, but I'm wary of it turning into another Mighty No. 9.
-
Yes, but they too are losing their talent.
Take Resident Evil for example. While I don't play the series myself, word on the Internet is that the last good RE game was Resident Evil 4. Which happened to be the last RE game that series creator Shinji Mikami worked on.
That's not even mentioning CapCom outright firing Keiji Inafune (creator of MegaMan) and halting all the projects he was working on.

If anything, Konami is following Sega:
-
So a "free" Contra remake is probably already en route.
-
...where you can buy a new weapon for $0.99. Lasts until you have to use a continue!
Extra lives just $0.99!
Extra continues $1.49!
-
Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, pay $1.99.
-
(CapCom, I'm looking at you)
ooooold news.
published a Strider game
That they didn't make. Because all their talent is fed up with them.
That's not even mentioning CapCom outright firing Keiji Inafune (creator of MegaMan) and halting all the projects he was working on.
This! His new game is looking quite good, especially now that the Nazi is gone.
Also, while DmC wasn't a bad game overall, I have no difficulty understanding why the fans got mad.
Sega
Hey, at least they bought a bunch of Warhammer games after THQ died. I approve. I mean, Sega finally made a good decision for once.
-
I mean, Sega finally made a good decision for once.
Well, Sega did decide to fund development of Alien: Isolation a few years back.
I'm half surprised they did after what happened with Aliens: Colonial Marines.

I'm not; after all, we're talking about a company that reinvents its most iconic franchise every few years, screwing it up every time they do so. Yet no matter how often they balls it up, they keep doing it.
-
Still, it's really something when people start not only comparing your company to Sega, but you come up worse.
-
I think JonTron's explanation for this was the best.

ALL the cocaine.

All those videos do is make me glad I don't watch his videos
-
Some of them are amazing. These just make fun of Sonic, partly because he doesn't like Sonic, and partly because Sega is awful at making Sonic.

Just curious, what's the problem with Might No. 9? I haven't read the updates from the past couple months yet, so did I miss something? Last I saw, they're still targeting late summer for a release.

They just got a new publisher, and everything is going great. Dina is gone!
So now people who payed for the game and forum access won't get banned from the forum just for disagreeing or disliking the community manager, who was essentially HyperJeff+Feminism.
She was so bad, people started taking back their pledges. But afaik Inafune wouldn't let the game turn out completely awful, so I was never too worried.
-
I'd totally forgotten about the Community Manager thing over there.
-
And now you really can! It's over!
-
Aside from all the community manager business, the official expected release date is sometime in September, IIRC. Or maybe that'll be the date they announce another round of fundraising for more DLC voice acting and another couple years delay, or some nonsense like that.
-
These just make fun of Sonic
There's a difference between a piss-take and 'hurr hurr teh bad gaemz all teh haet'; those videos are the latter.

Can you feel the sunrise, does it brighten up your day?

Can you feel the sun
riseshine, does it brighten up your day?
Don't you feel that sometimes you just need to run away?
-
The last Sonic I played was Sonic Advance, and I got all the emeralds eventually. Quite enjoyed that one.

I bet someone thinks that's a Dota reference.
-
Ah, got it. I never really got involved on the forum, so I missed all of that. Since I don't have a Windows computer, I couldn't play the beta, and I haven't paid much attention since then.

Yes... I don't want to be hit by a Dragon Slave.
It's unfair to whoosh you for missing that; outside the fandom, I don't think it's that well-known.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oY9m2sHQwLsAs the former Video Game Music Emperor, I knew exactly what song you were referring to... I was just looking for an excuse to post a different kind of reference... which @Magus seemed to get.

Oh.*toddles off to do something else now*
-
In Dota1, they actually named a character Lina Inverse. To avoid the obvious copyright issues, she now has a different last name, but her attack names are, as far as I know, unchanged.

I'm amused about how Sega's hottest currently-selling title is one only available in Japan, and if they're following their usual deprecation plan it's gonna go down in about two years.
-
The stupidest thing about PSO2 is that there's an English localisation, yet Sega refuses to release it in the US, where there's considerable demand for it
-
Capcom's doing a Steam sale right now. They have a decently impressive library, for PC at least.
Dead Rising and Street Fighter IV are still surprisingly large franchises.
-
I'm not; after all, we're talking about a company that reinvents its most iconic franchise every few years, screwing it up every time they do so. Yet no matter how often they balls it up, they keep doing it.
That's because morons like you buy it.
Complain about the quality, but have any of those shitty Sonic games been unprofitable?
(Also: Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing is the best cart racing game ever made.)
-
I was actually poking fun about how Lina Inverse (the Slayers one that is) and Amy Rose are both voiced by Lisa Ortiz.
-

Not any more; it's been Cindy Robinson since 2010
-

Looks like I was being way too optimistic:
-
At least this time, it was a somewhat reasonable reason.
"Hey, so, we finished the main content, but unlike Koei Tecmo, we aren't going to release it with the netplay broken. It'll take a quarter or two. Sorry." is the entirety of that long message. All I know is, this is exactly what gamers have been requesting that developers do: Get it right, rather than just disable networking for a month or three. As long as it's good, I don't mind.
-
So the MN9 demo that was supposed to come out a couple days ago as an apology for the repeated delays... has been delayed. The way it's going, the real world's going to be overrun by super fighting robots before this game comes out.
-
And that after they said the singleplayer is done. :/
I'm still hoping it ends up good, and what I played back when they let people play the beta was fun, if very incomplete.
They've understandably caused a lot more drama than they should have, but I'm still not worried about the end result.
-
I've heard that there hasn't been much added since the beta, but really I haven't been following the news as intently as it may seem from my repeated necro-ing of this thread.
Oh well, at least we (may) have Mighty Gunvolt on Steam
-
Meanwhile, I'll just go play Metal Man's stage in Super Mario Maker.
Yes, someone made that. No, I don't know why since Mega Man can't shoot in Mario Maker.
...oh you didn't know you can play as Mega Man in Mario Maker? Turns out it's Mario Maker's Amiibo support. It supports every amiibo that Nintendo has released, plus a few others that haven't.
-
But I can play that stage in the Megaman Legacy Collection on steam now! Complete with no volume option and savestates in a menu hidden inside the ~ button!
-
But you can play Super Mario Bros. levels as Mega Man. Go look up Super Mario Crossover (I hope it's still available).
-
I'm aware of it.
I wouldn't be surprised if that's where Nintendo got the idea to allow you to wear costumes in Super Mario Maker in SMB as it replaces the flight powerup (which the other 3 games support).
Then again, in SMM they all play exactly like Mario.
-
Here's my magic kickstarter strategy:
If the product turns out successful, I'll be able to buy it at normal retail price when it comes out.
Therefore, never kickstart anything.
-
Normally, I'd agree with that. This is just one of the few cases where I know I'll enjoy it anyway, and therefore don't feel bad about it.
And besides, if I ever get my game far enough along, I'm going to have to hire an artist, and the sort that can do what I need cannot possibly be cheap. I can't be 100% against something that could help with that.
