In which FrostCat brags about the alarm on his phone again

Who needs an alarm if you've got kids? The only use we've had for an alarm in the past years is to tell the kids "the alarm hasn't rung yet. Go back to bed!"
-
Who needs an alarm if you've got kids?
My daughter was the "wake up every three hours" type for a couple of years. The alarm is so you know which time it is that you can't go back to sleep again.
-

I've never gotten why people do this. When do you charge the phone? Do you charge it at work, but go into work with an empty battery? Do you just buy like 27 chargers and put them all over your house?
You can buy an alarm clock for $35 that'll last decades. (The only reason I had to replace the last one is because Congress decided to change when Daylight Savings Time started and ended, those fuckers.)
-

Did you buy a clock you can't set the time on yourself? Why would you do that?
-
Did you buy a clock you can't set the time on yourself?
No.
Why would you do that?
I didn't.
-
Well why was it a problem? I'm not telepathic!
-
The entire point in buying an alarm clock that sets itself is so you don't have to set it manually.
So when my alarm clock that sets itself suddenly required manually setting 4 times a year, I said fuck it and bought a new one.
-
So when my alarm clock that sets itself suddenly required manually setting 4 times a year
You could have reduced it to 2 times a year by disabling the auto-DST. But I guess that would have required "effort".
-
You could have reduced it to 2 times a year by disabling the auto-DST.
You couldn't do that.
But I guess that would have required "effort".
Also it was impossible.
-
Or get an extra house one timezone away.
-
I've never gotten why people do this.
I bet I regret this....
This is the one area where I free myself from my belt onions:I do this (use phone alarms) so I can set billions and billions of alarms/reminders
... kid needs medicine? set an alarm;
...gotta go to moonlighting job? (different times on different days) set multiple alarms;
...gotta cover for the other guy on the moonlighting job? - create an alarm - activate it when needed.
...This week's meeting cancelled? Leave it in the phone, you'll need it for next week.Sleeping on the couch? Alarm is with you!!
Camping with kid who needs medicine? Alarm is with you!!Not to mention - different sounds for different reasons!
-
Well duh, I use phone alarms too.
But they don't replace a proper alarm clock.
For one thing, if you use your phone instead of an alarm clock, when the heck do you charge your phone? as I've asked already and you utterly failed to answer.

Such a clock wouldn't sell in Arizona[1] as it would be considered defective.
[1] Usual conditions about the Navajo Nation[2] which observes DST.
[2] Usual conditions about the Hopi reservation[3] which does not observe DST and is surrounded by the Navajo Nation.
[3] Usual conditions about the bit of the Navajo Nation that is contained within the Hopi Reservation since the Navajo Nation observes DST.
-

I don't live in Arizona.
-
Why not keep the charger by the bed? Most phones still work while charging...
-

You charge it when you want. Who doesn't have a dozen or more chargers by this point? All modern phones (except for iPhones) use standard chargers, and every tablet (except for iPads) uses the exact same charger too. Need a charger? I'm sure you have one nearby!
-

I don't live in Arizona.
Good. That makes me happy.
-
I don't get why the alarm requires changing if the clock adjusts to DST automatically.
What am I missing?
-
when the heck do you charge your phone?
When it's low...?
Unless I'm in the farging woods there's an outlet nearby... and in that case I am Prepared™
-
Why not keep the charger by the bed? Most phones still work while charging...
Because the charger is a USB port, and I don't have any USB ports near my bed? Except when my laptop just happens to be there, but that's only when I'm watching a movie before going to bed.
You charge it when you want. Who doesn't have a dozen or more chargers by this point?
I have 3 of the cables my phone uses to charge. One near my computer. One near my computer at work. And the third in my laptop case. None of them are near my bed, because there are no USB ports near my bed.
Where do you people buy phones that plug into outlets to charge instead of USB ports? Am I some weird mutant?
(I know Apple phones come with outlet -> USB things, but I never buy Apple shit.)
-

Several years ago, the US changed when the DST switch happened. Clocks that relied on the old schedule to make the switch were no longer useful for the automated DST function.
It's not the alarm that needs changing, it's the time on the clock.
-

Where do you buy phones that don't have the facility to plug into an outlet out of the box?
Every smartphone I've ever owned has come with a USB cable and a USB mains adapter.
edit: And none of them were made by Apple.

Oh right, didn't know that. TIL etc.

27 is an exaggeration, but I have 3 people with cell phones, so we try to have at least one per room per person who uses that room, so two in my bedroom, two in the living room, etc. Plus I have two in the car and one for the office.
-
You can buy an alarm clock for $35 that'll last decades.
Or I could use my phone, and then if I travel I don't need to carry another piece of equipment, etc.

You don't have any of the handy AC adapters? I find that hard to believe.
Where do you people buy phones that plug into outlets to charge instead of USB ports?
My phones come with the cable and with a wall adapter that the cable connects to. The wall adapter also has one handy bonus: it charges faster than a USB port. I got it with my wife's old Samsung, my old HTC, my current LG, her current LG, our Samsung tablet. Never had a phone come with a cable and without the wall adapter. Kind of like this one from LG:
You can also upgrade your wall outlets:
Am I some weird mutant?
Apparently.
-
Where do you buy phones that don't have the facility to plug into an outlet out of the box?
If my Lumia had a wall charger in the box, I tossed it in the trash. I honestly don't remember if it came with one or not.
Or I could use my phone, and then if I travel I don't need to carry another piece of equipment, etc.
If you travel, you're in a hotel and can schedule a wake-up call.
This, too
SO DO I. NOBODY WAS TALKING ABOUT THIS UNTIL IJIJJIJIJ PULLED THE TOPIC OUT OF HIS ASSHOLE.
-

You are in the parenting thread - home of mutants - there are
fivefour1 people in my house dragging cords and charging nubbins all over the place... the only thing more likely to be underfoot is Lego. Or the dog./setting_alarm: remember to charge dog.
1 One person in the house puts their cords away... that way I know where mine are, at least.
-
when the heck do you charge your phone?
I use whatever charger is at hand. Every time I get a new phone, it comes with its own charger, so I don't even buy that many.
-
Does your alarm clock runs on fairy dust or electricity? Use either power source. Just plug in the adapter, but be gentle to the fairy holes. Presto, a charged phone in the morning!
-
Am I some weird mutant?
Yes. Every phone I've bought :/ probably the last five years had come with a wall wart with usb port.
-
Well my 1927 house has only one outlet near the bed and it's already taken up with my reading lamp and alarm clock.
-
Or I could use my phone, and then if I travel I don't need to carry another piece of equipment, etc.
I like the clock, because it's always sitting there telling me the time. I can just look over there. I know that's too old fashioned for you. You need to be able to touch your clock to read it.
-
SO DO I. NOBODY WAS TALKING ABOUT THIS UNTIL IJIJJIJIJ PULLED THE TOPIC OUT OF HIS ASSHOLE.
See? See what I did there? I'm psychic.
Why do I want a waking-up-alarm that's a phone in my pocket?
Answered above because I (and many parents - why are you trying to subvert the thread?) need to sleep and wake (hopefully) more than once a day and in multiple places... while letting sleeping dogs lie. (Family too.)
-
Since I no longer need an alarm clock I don't have that issue, but do try the fairy dust.
-
NOBODY WAS TALKING ABOUT THIS UNTIL IJIJJIJIJ PULLED THE TOPIC OUT OF HIS ASSHOLE.
Low blood sugar time is it?
-
Well my 1927 house has only one outlet near the bed and it's already taken up with my reading lamp and alarm clock.
You should check out these things called extension cords that have multiple additional outlets on them.
-
You need to be able to touch your clock to read it.
But in compensation my clock follows me wherever I go.
-
I'm happy with my bedroom the way it is.
-
Well my 1927 house has only one outlet near the bed and it's already taken up with my reading lamp and alarm clock.
Coincidentally, I was already looking at this:
a little spendy, and probably doesn't go with the house - which I hope is sweet arts and crafts bungalow, but...
It does prove the existence of a useful type of object.... and that's enough if you're a math guy. ;)
-
But in compensation my clock follows me wherever I go.
Do you also turn off the clock display on your computer?
I'm happy with my bedroom the way it is.
You're not a parent nor soon to be, so no one really cares.
-
Do you also turn off the clock display on your computer?
I don't understand the question. Is this something you onion-belters do?
-

I'm just trying to see how adverse you are to using clocks that aren't on your phone. You seem to have convinced yourself that since your phone can do something, you should totally use it for that instead of something else.
-
Might I prevail upon a Jeff bailiff to move this alarm clock/phone charger mess elsewhere?
-
I'm just trying to see how adverse you are to using clocks that aren't on your phone.
I'm not. I have several in my apartment. I prefer to use my phone for alarms.
You seem to have convinced yourself that since your phone can do something, you should totally use it for that instead of something else.
No, you seem to have assumed something beyond what I wrote.
-
Might I prevail upon a Jeff bailiff to move this alarm clock/phone charger mess elsewhere?
Gotta be careful to not removed anything relevant, though.
-
No, you seem to have assumed something beyond what I wrote.
Your'e incorrect. It wasn't an assumption but an incorrect induction.
