Get rid of old technologies!!!!!!!!!! Blakeyrat is an idiot for even attempting to use this forum
-
CANADIAN think-tank says we should get rid of checks! Obsolete technologies are insecure and dangerous!
Illustrates point with a photo of a Windows XP computer.

Can I nominate the "wheel". It has got to be one of the oldest technologies around and it would remove the stigmata associated with those that reinvent it?
-
-
No~~~~~~~~~~~~~!
Making people get rid of wheels will most certainly make sure they reinvent it later.

I'm sure SJWs have a word for this kind of oppression!*goes googling*

Canadians still write about one billion cheques every year
Made me interested to see what the comparable stats were here. I found this, which says that in 2015 the average monthly number of cheques is 13.4 million, down from 14.9 million in 2014. So that works out to 161 million cheques per year. (This page says they "account for less than 5% of all non-cash payments"). I'm actually surprised it's that many; it'd be interesting to see in broad terms where they're being used. Then I went to check the population stats to make the appropriate scaling. When I googled for "population of Australia", the top result was a World Bank graph showing a comparison of the populations of Australia and Canada. Coincidence or scarily impressive prediction?
In any case it looks like Canada has almost exactly 50% more population, so our 161 million cheques per year would scale to about 240 million at Canada's population, meaning we use about a quarter as many cheques.

CANADIAN think-tank says we should get rid of checks!
To be fair, we're much further along that road in Europe. I only use them for a few things a year now, and I don't want to give any government the authority to directly debit my account thankyouverymuch…
-
Needs one more exclamation point in the title. You know, so it goes up to eleven.
-
I think fire should be gotten rid of instead. We have electric heaters, cookers, and so on these days, and think of the savings if we could abolish all fire departments/brigades!
-
abolish all fire departments/brigades!
I think that at least half of the affected population might take issue with that.
Otherwise I accede to to your claim that fire (as an invention) is older than that of the wheel and should, therefore, be removed first.
While I'm at it: Does anybody know the position of prostitution on this list, and should it get an exemption?
-
It depends on whether you can count it as an invention, I suppose. Also, if you think abolishing fire services would cause an outcry, imagine what abolishing prostitution would result in.

Gender Test: How many dalmatians in this image?
-
-
Male. Test passed.
-
I've never used a check nor had a check book (or whatever is called). Also, I don't see why people keep going to their banks to update their account book or why even have one.
-
Does anybody know the position of prostitution
Whatever you want, if you're paying enough.
-
-
I'm not sure I could get a chequebook even if I wanted one. I also have to pay extra if I want physical statements instead of .pdfs.
I literally can't remember the last time I saw someone pay with a cheque for anything. It must be at least 15 years.
-
Most of the checks that are written in my name actually come from my bank. On stuff that we have set up to pay through them that other people also pay via, they apparently aggregate stuff and send a physical check (or so I've been told).
I rarely write a check. Most of those are for stuff for my kids through school. Lab fees and the like. I do receive the occasional check for various reasons.

Gender Test:
Sorry, could you repeat the question? I wandered off for some "me time" and lost track.

stigmata
I can understand wanting to discourage wheel reinvention, but crucifixion seems a bit much.

Belt-onion here.... even I don't use checks in public... but I fire off 10-20 a month for bills and donations via the mail.
Past couple of years I feel like I've mastered the skill of paying on time, so I may attempt (gradually) the new skill of online banking...
-
Sometimes, from the reinventor's point of view (sometimes elevated above the heads of others), there is little difference as quite often their
crucifierscritics really wants to hammer their point home, to the point that somebody gets hung up on it
-

Looking at my cheque history i see that for as far back as i can see online (one year unless i drill back into my statement archive) i can see that i have written a check on the 1st and 15th of the month every month to the same person..... and that's it. just 24 cheques.
I would love to change to paying my rent via direct debit or something, but my landlord only has the one tenant (me) so it's not worth her effort to set it up and the expense her bank would charge for it.
I could also move to paying monthly i guess, but... well this works for is.

You obviously never grocery shop on a weekend morning, also known as "the times that the elderly buy their food".
We would also accept, "Things that make @Polygeekery think 'What the fucking fuck? Are you kidding me? You're writing a check for $17? And the check is not filled out already? You didn't know where you were buying groceries at??'"
-
That's the odd thing - I do.
Every day I go to the local shop and am surrounded by the aged. Yet here they all use cash, which is slow as hell. Everybody else uses the PayWave thing and the cashiers are happy.

I look out for young hispanic ladies with strollers. They often end up using WIC vouchers which includes a painful process of verifying that they got the right stuff. Invariably, they don't. Takes for freaking ever.

I still write checks to pay bills. I find that I pay more attention about my finances when I have to physically write a check and see the numbers.
-

My experience of that is "pension day", which varies from region to region. That is to say, one afternoon a week, the supermarket is crowded out by pensioners doing their shopping. The queues at the checkout do get a bit clogged and slow if you time it
rightwrong. However, it can be mitigated by finding a checkout station that is not wide enough for "zimmer frames" or "walkers"
-
But the number of cheques used in Canada has been declining by about three to five per cent a year as people move to online payments, mobile payments and tools such as PayPal and electronic funds transfer.
No, let's not expire them based on merit and consumer demand.
Let's force everyone to comply.
Now that I think about it, the only checks that I write go to the government.
I do send out a yearly check to a guy that helps drill wells for Africans in Chad. But he's starting to move to electronic donations too.

Triggered.
But they're standing strong, with power and authority. Women that are objectified are positioned on the ground, helpless. It's not possible that strength is a part of the sexual image women prefer.
I'm sorry, but if you think those helmets are women, you probably need to see an eye doctor.

Hmmm....
Well...
They aren't on the floor, they appear to be standing strong.

In the US we have a similar phenomenon, except it is the first of the month and it is welfare recipients. You don't go in to a Walmart between the 1st and 3rd.

Whoosh please.

Anytime I make note that men are used as sexual objects.
All of the sudden, posture becomes a thing.
But almost always, it's the viewer that has the problem, as you can find any gender in any posture.
Just go to Japan.

Whoosh please.
I don't think that qualifies as a whoosh for @xaade. It might qualify for you though, as you did not know what he was getting on about. ;-)
-
Sorry, can you not nominated yourself for one of these then?, as that was what I was trying to do. In a round about kinda way
-
Ohhhhh, I thought you were nominating @xaade.
