Amazon's helpful metric
-
I'm currently looking for a new TV. Happily, Amazon tells me how much a kilo of each TV costs so I don't have to work it out on my own:
-
Could I have 4 kilo LG TV please? How long does it stay fresh in the fridge?
-
The other day I saw a reference to John Cage's 4'33", which was helpfully converted to 2.05m.
-
So the WTF is that it isn't in units of Β£*kg, right? Then you could optimize for low weight and low price at the same time.
-
No, no, no! That was a conversion for the speed of silence!
(Which is not a song by Simon & Garfunkel, though it might be one by Frank Zappa, I guess...)
-
Works for products on the supermarket shelves, why not here?
-
4'33"
Having some difficulty here, being a staunch imperialist:
4' 33"" = (4 x 12) + 33 = 48 + 33 = 81"
81 * 2.
4554cm =198.45205.74cm =1.98m2.06m :pOh right!, now I see what the issue is. Its the 4 foot 33 inches that was throwing me.
No... wait... perhaps it's 4 minutes 33 seconds....(gets out compass and parallel ruler)... now to reorientate and get my bearings...
-
An inch is 2.54 cm.
-
81 * 2.45cm = 198.45cm =1.98m
2.54cm = 1inch
edit:No... wait... perhaps it's 4 minutes 33 seconds...
Indeed.
-
You are right. It is late (for me). It 4.45 ltrs to the gallon.
I will edit the post accordingly. Thankyou
-
-
Why did they define metric using such an arbitrary starting point, anyway?
When you have a system of measurements that scales in base N with each base measurement being a base N power of some universal constant (like the Planck length), I'll pay attention.
-
fuck, bollocks, shit, c....
I spent the first half of my school life learning the imperial system, and the second half the metric one. I've been Doing it Wrongβ’ both ways since then - I is totally f*$ked in both systems. Thank f*$k I'm still getting 100 new pence for my gold sovereigns and guineas
-
I never learned to count/add etc. in Imperial and the only time I ever use it is in expressions like 'You can see for miles from here', which don't sound so good metricasized.
-
No... wait... perhaps it's 4 minutes 33 seconds.

Of course you will, it'll be just as popular as lojban.
-
lojban gets dates wrong. They put datro in the wrong order.
-
OH NOES you better form a splinter group: lojban2
-
Nah, I'll just use velselveldatro instead.
-
No, the only truly standard way of specifying the 27th day of February in the year 2013 is 2456351.
-
Do you mean 13.0.0.3.8?
-
Other stores do this, too. Here's latex gloves, at 5 cents per gallon.
(I was wondering...was that based on how much water you can pour into them?)
-
Side note: don't buy TVs with Tizen - it's fucked. Don't buy TVs with Orsay (previous Samsung system) - it's just as fucked. Don't buy LG - almost as fucked as Tizen.
-
Side note: don't buy Smart TVs
with Tizen-it'sthey're fucked.FTFY.
buy a dumb TV and use one of these to turn it into a smart tv:
or any number of other options!
vastly superior smart tv! and you can actually upgrade the smartness without risking bricking your TV!
-
Thank f*$k I'm still getting 100 new pence for my gold sovereigns and guineas
Shouldnβt you be getting 105 pence for a guinea?
-
and you can actually upgrade the smartness without risking bricking your TV!
My Smart TV updates itself. There's no more risk than the Chromecast updating itself.
vastly superior smart tv!
I have a Chromecast on the dumb TV upstairs. It's good, but it's not vastly superior to the actual Smart TV downstairs. It's a handy upgrade if you have a TV you don't intend to replace. If you're buying a new one, why not just buy a Smart TV. They're not really more expensive these days.
-

yes, but there is the differential. if the smart tv bricks itself it's more expensive to fix than the chromecast.
I have a Chromecast on the dumb TV upstairs. It's good, but it's not vastly superior to the actual Smart TV downstairs.
the chromecast, maybe not. the roku, or the firetv are both proper smart tv replacements though. If you're buying a new one, why not just buy a Smart TV.
because the smart TV software is all shit, and when it gets hopelessly out of date in a few years because they manufacturer only gives updates for the cuirrent generation it's way cheaper to buy a $35-$100 device like the chromebook/roku/whatever than it is to buy a new TV.plan for the future!
or are you planning to replace the TV every few years?
-
yes, but there is the differential. if the smart tv bricks itself it's more expensive to fix than the chromecast.
If. Dumb TVs break too. Lots of electronics break. I could have a Β£50 smartphone rather than a Β£400 smartphone because that'd be cheaper to replace if it bricked itself. I could have a sponge instead of a dishwasher. I don't though, because it's a small risk.
the roku, or the firetv are both proper smart tv replacements though.
But now I have two devices where one suffices. For what benefit?
because the smart TV software is all shit
It is not.because they manufacturer only gives updates for the cuirrent generation
Mine's at least two generations behind. Stuff still gets updated.or are you planning to replace the TV every few years?
How many is a few? TVs don't last forever. It'll either break, or I'll want a bigger one, and this isn't something only applies to Smart TVs. My dumb TV could have the same fate.
-
Dumb TVs break too.
not via manufacturer untested updates.
But now I have two devices where one suffices. For what benefit?
I just told you the benefit. you even challenged me on that benefit and i defended it. I am doing so now a second time.- modularity. I can use any television as my smart TV
- Robustness. i do not have to wory about updates bricking my expensive television
- upgradeability. i can upgrade the smart tv independantly of the TV itself
- quality. the smart tv software is shit. every one of the bundled smart tv software solutions i have seen ever is shit. the solutions of the chromecast is significantly better if limited, the solutions of the roku and fire tv are superior and are not limited as the chromecast is.
I can't help it if you decide these benefits are not worth the slight additional expense and the need to keep track of a second remote, nevertheless these are some of the benefits of the arrangement.
In the interests of completeness here are some of the negatives of the arrangement
- consumes a HDMI port on the TV
- Requires separate power supply
- requires separate remote (usually, the boxes that include CEC do not)
- there is a small additional cost to the two devices separately that is not present when bundled
- There are two devices that could break instead of just one.
It is not.
I disagree with you.
-
I generally only need a dumb TV as it will be connected to my NUC all the time.
I just found it it doesn't have CEC, which is quite annoying, although it does have its own built-in IR sensor.
For me, living in a country which doesn't have Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc., about the only benefit for a smart TV is being able to plug the webcam directly into it for Skype and save a USB port on the PC (and a cable hanging down).
-
not via manufacturer untested updates.
What makes you think it's untested? Are TV manufacturers somehow less trustworthy than other manufacturers?
Besides, this still isn't an issue limited to Smart TVs.modularity. I can use any television as my smart TV
Fair enough if the TV isn't up for replacement otherwise. This is what I did with the TV upstairs.Robustness. i do not have to wory about updates bricking my expensive television
See above. TVs aren't that expensive these days anyway.upgradeability. i can upgrade the smart tv independantly of the TV itself
Fair one, but it's not like this is something that happens often.quality. the smart tv software is shit.
It's not. Mine has stuff like Plex, Netflix iPlayer etc and they work just as well as their non-TV counterparts.the solutions of the chromecast is significantly better if limited,
It's not. I get the same experience with Plex etc, except the Chromecast requires me to use another device to operate it. So to watch Plex upstairs requires: TV, Chromecast, phone/tablet. Plex downstairs requires: TV.I can't help it if...
I'm not asking you to. I'm just providing a different view.consumes a HDMI port on the TV
Requires separate power supply
requires separate remote
Indeed. The Chromecast requires another device, not even just a remote.I disagree with you.
O RLY?
-

had an older version of that worked a treat before i accidentally broke my nuc (tripped and dropped it down two flights of stairs. for some reason it never worked again.)
-
Are TV manufacturers somehow less trustworthy than other manufacturers?
they aren't.
why do you think i don't trust them.
TVs aren't that expensive these days anyway.
at still > 1k for a 50" TV that's expensivesure the smaller sizes are dirt cheap, but the ones you put in your den are pricy. more so if you want full hd or even 4k (although i still question why for 4k. there's just not enough 4k media out there)
It's not.
lucky you then. my experience is rather different.O RLY?
YA RLY!
-
In the newest NUCs they removed the headers so you now have to solder it directly to the board, which I'm not quite prepared to do yet
-
In the newest NUCs they removed the headers
Intel! WHY THE FUCK DID YOU DO THAT?!
-
-
hmmm.....
i fond myself wondering if there are any through hole mounts on the board.
If not you may be able to reflow solder the header on...
not without risk of course but it's possible.
-
they aren't.
why do you think i don't trust them.
Because of the untested claim. That shit's tested just like on a smart phone, which is just as likely to brick itself.
Regarding expense (multiquote and mobile... Well.. that's different) I'm not sure they're that much. And over here you'd have to go out of your way to find one without full HD.
-
That shit's tested just like on a smart phone, which is just as likely to brick itself.
i can count on the fingers of one paw* the number of times i had a non AOSP mobile phone that actually HAD an OS update released.
App updates, plenty, but it wasn't until i bought my Google Nexus that i actually had a phone that got an OS upgrade.
*That would be 0 for those who are unfamiliar with the anatomy of paws
-
My S3 got a couple before I killed it. My S5 has had a few, including going from Android 4.whatever to 5.whatever. Even my BlackBerry has had at least two.
My Nexus 5 and 7 get more, Google are better at that but it's their phone and their OS so they'd have no excuse otherwise.
-
I'm pretty sure that is referring to a "fuel saver" deal where buying those groceries on the store perks card gives you so much off per gallon in gas in that store's affiliated (or branded) gas stations.
-

HTC Inspire. Samsung Galaxy S3 and Note II. LG G3.
My Samsung Blackjack II, although that was Windows Mobile. Guess you're just bad at picking updatable phones.

I didn't notice that, hmmm. Maybe I should shop there more than once every 18 months.

Maybe it's just me
Maybe it's because it's 3:30 in the morning
Maybe it's because I was "forced" to look at the image for a second time.
But."Premium Glove Large, $2.79"
"2 for $5.00"(when) I buy gloves I get 2, because they come in pairs:
Like shoes or trousers or socks etc.
Or is this an example of some ultra PC to cater for the (missing) limb impaired?
Or is there a specialised market to buy just one latex glove, that I am unaware of?
-
trousers
Why would you buy two trousers in a package? I bet you also buy two glasses in a package, you freakin' weirdo! <trolleybus:
-
country which doesn't have Netflix
My $5 droplet with OpenVPN on it says otherwise.
-
I so want to say TDEMSYR, but as I might want to make an issue about your use of the phrase:
you freakin' weirdo!
I shouldn't be saying things like
YR
Hey! wadda yu kno, it worked!
