One thing 2010 predicted accurately: the US would need to get help from the Russians to get to our properties in space.
Ouch.
Re: Lawnmower Man:
However, the movie succeeded in ways I don’t think its creators anticipated—rather than warning people that VR might have subversive uses and should be approached carefully, it really just ended up telling us all that VR was terrible and dumb.

Status: just now figured out the DOTA2 thing is in Key Arena this year, not Benaroya. No WONDER the lunch places were jammed all last week.

Status: Chargers for MacBooks are $80. That is pants on head retarded.

I told you they're in Seattle, but you never listen!

I knew they were in Seattle, duh. Just previous years they've been at Benaroya, which is miles from where I work.
I know you're from farm country buddy, but some cities are kind of large.

Status: I found out today that a girl I know is a high-dollar hooker. Life is strange sometimes.
Addendum: So, she works at the barber shop that my son and I get our haircut at. My MIL has been staying with us for the past week. This morning the rug rat and I leave to get haircuts and on the way out the door I made a remark, forgetting that the MIL was there....
Me: (to me wife) "OK, we're off to get a haircut from a hooker."
MIL: "What?!?"
Me: "Uhhhhh, long story. Gotta go."
Wife: "Really? You're going to leave me alone to explain that one?"
Me: "Yep. I will bring back bagels. "
I really need a verbal filter.

As my colleague says, the problem isn't that these thoughts appear in your head, the problem is there's nothing to stop them before they roll out your mouth.

He sums it up pretty well.

Status: Wondering why http://www.dota2.com/international/live/ has a countdown to 1½ hours from now if the schedule says it starts at 9AM PDT.
-
Opening ceremonies?
Of course you'd think they'd want to stream those too.
Maybe doors open at 9?
EDIT: what's the point of a view schedule page with NO TIMES ON IT!?
Anyway, it says in extremely tiny print that play starts at 10:00. So the countdown is still wrong.
-
The opening ceremonies were 5 days ago. The Live tab has 9:00am PDT and the Replays tab has 10:00am PDT. Weird.
-
The YouTube streaming page has a correct countdown for 10:00 AM.
EDIT: High quality stream so far. They forgot to turn on the right mics. It's just some producer's creepy breathing.
EDIT: I like that French guy's accent. I have no idea what's going on.

People are following @raceprouk's lead. I wouldn't worry unless I get the spoon.
-
WTF they're allowed to pause?
-
I assume it was some technical problem. Usually the players have to ask for a pause and then the administrator pauses. But the team that was winning the teamfight paused, so it didn't give them an unfair advantage.
-
I mean a lot of sports have time-outs but usually they are limited and also have limited time spans.
It must have been a technical issue.

Status: day 2 of the Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns beta. Every single dynamic event in the map is stuck. There are "smokescale" dogs (blurry picture below) that have a 0-second cooldown on their shadowstep ability. I have 7 different items named
???
in my inventory.

However, the glider ability works nicely, and the bouncing mushrooms work. Most of the time. When they don't kill me from "falling" onto the place they are hardcoded to throw me.
The in-world cutscenes are nice (think Half-Life 2, but with a voice acted main character), except when they trigger while my character is in a different city from the NPC it's talking to.
The new mushroom race is nice, except for the one death animation that turns my entire screen into one blurry texture when it dies in the same 10-mile radius of me.
I learned how to harvest sawgill mushrooms using the mastery system, but when I picked one I got a blue
???
item that I already apparently had.

Well, rather new, maybe two years, maybe three, maybe more since I started reading here, but obviously not long enough to notice that anyone around here under any circumstances cared a dime about political correctness. (Except ironically, of course.)

Great job as always, Valve.
Next time, look up what a z-axis is and why it is important.

They're busy right now giving $6.6M to one of two Dota 2 teams.

It was at KeyArena last year too.

You know it occurs to me, due to relative cost-of-living between Canada/US and China-- I think, practically speaking, the 2nd place team took home more money than 1st.

the DOTA2 thing is in Key Arena
People getting paid ridiculous amount of money for playing video games: Sad
People watching other people getting paid for playing video games: Sadder
An arena filled with people paying money to watch other people getting paid for playing video games: Utterly pathetic.

It must be the start of a new school year. IDE support forums are filled with OT basic programming questions.

I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:
- Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
- Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
- Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.

Why is "delete some files and remove some database entries" such a difficult operation?
