("Mobile")("computer Repair")
-
Another brilliant small business website.
Points of interest:
- Buttons styled as radio buttons
- Large mensa banner to the right
- Stuff like this: ("Mobile")("computer Repair"). WTF is with that? Some search and replace gone wrong? An outdated google hack!? I need to know!
-
These guys actually break your computer while remaining stationary?

Advertising this guy?
-
That ("Mobile")("computer Repair") site is terrible.
-
Obviously, the parens are there to disambiguate: "(Mobile computer) repair" is not the same as "Mobile (computer repair)". And the quotes are because so many programming languages (and the stupid JSON) require you to put quotes around every string, so it's just to show that they can computer good.
-
They will remove (Windows Operating System) from your ("computer")!
-
It's because you turned your javascript off. If you had it turned on it would have selected the appropriate value based on your device (i.e. "Mobile" from a mobile device and "computer Repair" from a non-mobile device).

The guys in Alabama, what do you expect.
-
Eastpointe MI is in Alabama?
-
Hey, I know that guy! If he invites you to be a *happy camper * and *party* in the *playground*, or starts talking about *squeezing* the *juice*, then just get out of there.

The fact that they have a Mensa image on there to advertise how smart they are just goes further to reinforce my opinion that most Mensa members are utter idiots. Had to work with one for 3 years, everyone was very happy when he finally quit. People who need to throw that kind of stuff in your face are people you are just better off not dealing with, ever.
-
I HAD to see how they managed to style radio buttons into actual buttons. Turns out that it's just an image with links mapped onto it.
I'm rather disappointed
edit: Does anyone know why my image doesn't have the magic Discourse overlay like most others do?

NewGuest.dll
...wha...huh? You can do that?

...wha...huh? You can do that?
Not familiar with old-school image maps, or DLL URLS? Obviously the latter is an IISism.
-
I just assumed it worked like passing it over to an old fashioned CGI script

...wha...huh? You can do that?
Why wouldn't you be able to?
You do realize that the file extension means absolutely nothing to the HTTP protocol, right?
For decades (possibly still?) ebay operated from a
.exe
file.

I used to know one of the VPs at ebay. They had (and may still have) a policy of not invalidating the URLs that they publish1 and what happens internally has got nothing to do with what the URLs might indicate. While they might have originally run from an .exe, it's not really been that for ages; no platform scales CGI and the like up that far.
1 Except by the item being sold. D'uh!

That was kind of the point I was getting at when I said, "the file extension means absolutely nothing to the HTTP protocol". You can serve up any content from any extension. In fact, "extension" isn't even a "thing" as far as HTTP is concerned. Only Content-Type.

If you handwave a certain amount, it does.

Since I have never actually implemented a website that works with CGI, I do

Oh, extensions certainly aren't supposed to be a thing with HTTP. There were versions of IE (was it 5 or earlier?) which nonetheless preferred the extension over the content type for figuring out what to do though. It was weird even at the time, and probably only applied for some things (images and videos?) but it was definitely the case: I remember going when I found out.
Whatever we think of it now, IE6 was much better than the earlier versions of IE.
I have seen extensions used as a way of doing ghetto content type negotiation, and within the past few years. I suspect that's just working around broken clients and stuff like that, plus the fact that a user's content type preferences are not always very well expressable with clients. Messy.

But getting the *GO! GO!* for the *dancing* is pretty handy.
-
I suspect that DLL has more than one image as bitmaps, like most system icons used to come from.
-
OMFG, my eyes!
I don't know jack shit about web design these days, so if I want to make a simple page, I use bootstrap and that's it. At least it won't look ugly as fuck.
Also, "About us" page is even more seriously fucked.
-
The way old-school server-side image maps worked, that DLL was the handler for the click, instead of an ASP or CGI exe. It's probably an ISAPI filter.

I wonder what impact this thread will have on the likelihood Focus Hope graduates will get a job where thedailywtf readers have a say.
