What's in a name?
-
People these days tend to take unusual first names for their kids. And because I'm working in Germany, a last name like "Mailer" is not so strange. After giving HR a dump of AD a while ago, it was only by accident that I found out today they were trying to identify for days already in vain a certain person called "Mailer, Acronis".
Reminds me of the day the 2nd line help desk called me (3d line).
"This process is eating all of the system's resources! it stays at 98-99% and sometimes even hits 100%!"
"What's it called?"
"System Idle Process"(Granted, they weren't native English speakers)
-
I think I'm gonna get my first whoosh badge (or whatever it's called - CBA to rediscover the series of clicks and their locations needed to find out). But I don't get the "joke", and I don't think it has anything to with my brain cell working at a near sedentary speed this morning.
- I'm assuming AD is Active Directory
- "Mailer" could be confused with some daemon or other
- Google seems to think that Acronis is the (Company and Product) name some form of disk imaging software, without any apparent reference to it being used for a person.
I can understand that a combination of both, might, conceivably, be confused with an instruction to "go off and image the disk". But would any software used to analyse a "dump" consider what it found to be atomically executed?

See Onyx's reply: Human Resources was trying to identify (manually) an employee called "Acronis Mailer". Yes, I think your brain cells aren't up to speed yet
-
Now I am doubly confounded, as your response confused me more, and that it is supposed to help me solicit illumination - doubly so.
But thank you for the effort to elucidate anyway, even if it was wasted on me :)
-
"Acronis Mailer" is the account for some server or printer or whatever.
HR thought it was a real person and freaked out when they couldn't find it.
-
Well... HR are a - that's a given truth. If this is an allusion to HR's inability to find its own (metaphorical) arse with its own hands, so to speak. Then I will accept the topic. But I still have no idea what Acronis Mailer could refer to.
Ahhhh, thank you @cartman82
-
Well, it's not such an obscure product, at least in Europe: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acronis . Perhaps it would've been clearer if it was called something like "TrueImage Mailer" or "BackupExec Mailer".

Need
I was focussing on it being a real person's name. Had @YellowOnline not prepared us about the German name thing (and don't get me started on German Words), then he would have been flamed to the ground, because Our Community would have been focussing on the IT context of Mailer and not got the joke.
Wait..... I think it did, and didn't (respectively on my two propositions where didn't = !not got the joke)

No, not for me this morning

EVERYONE IN THE KRANKENWAGEN! THIS IS NO TIME TO DWELL ON WELTSCHMERZ!
or be descriptive

I was trying to piece together a message about cron, like, "Mailer: A cron is failing" and the "failing" got cut off, or something.
Probably because every morning I get an email saying "exim paniclog /var/log/exim4/paniclog on [machine] has non-zero size, mail system might be broken." Apparently it can't write to the reject log. I should fix that. Someday.
-
message about cron, like,
Though about that until I got an overflow condition trying to wrap my one functioning brain cell around it.
-
I should fix that
What! And lose you chance to be immortalised here in some future Article :)
-
I've used Acronis before, so I understood the WTF pretty much right away. It is a good WTF, but believe me, TRWTF is Acronis.
-
Who is General Failure and why is he reading my hard disk?!
Sorry, it belongs in this thread.
-
I wonder if Acronis Mailer is a cousin of Prawo Jazdy.

How long could it take to login and execute "chmod 777 /var/log/exim4/paniclog" or whatever reject log's name is?
-
How long could it take to login
About thirty seconds. Finding my login, remembering which of the many saved IP addresses is my server, looking up the password in my vault, maybe adds five minutes. Giving a crap adds another 30 minutes :)

You're kind of a jerk for not removing the bot accounts from the dump before giving it to HR.
The WTF here is the IT department, the HR department are the victims.
-
I hear they were hot after that System dude. He's all over the place!
-
It was a forest dump including 15 domains, so there were lots of service accounts - and I did remove them because I'm a nice guy, but I must've overlooked that one ;)
