Poll: Circular Avatars

How do you go from 2 markers in cooked to 2 markers in raw? You need some level of magic.
EG:
^ I just highlighted this bla ^
At this point the client knows that:
I just <strong>highlighted this</strong> bla
Was highlighted, but ... what is the Markdown?
3 options:
- Hunt and peck for the markers in raw
- Go from HTML to Markdown
- Have ugly HTML in the quote.
-
Maybe you shouldn't have used Markdown?
-
Oh I get that
I was asking about when you use the 'Quote whole post' button ;)
-
Quote whole post is much more doable if we can get the nesting to be respected properly.
-
Well, that's kinda what I'm asking about. It seems like it's a simple job of grabbing the raw, wrapping a new
block round it, et voilá! Plus, it would avoid the issue of nested quotes going AWOL.Although I may be missing something?
-
But when quoting, you want the raw, not the cooked
Yeah, I got it just about the time you replied... Did I mention 1AM?
I was also thinking of the wrong thing - I thought we were discussing nesting problems, not select-quoting problems.
-
Fascinating as this conversation is, wouldn't it be better jeffed off into it's own topic?
-
I am talking about nesting issues ;)

But... what... then... just...
Fuck it, I'm off to watch YouTube, this is far too confusing for me at this hour.

Back on topic, I made this change:
https://meta.discourse.org/t/changing-or-removing-the-last-poster-avatar-highlight/27211/60?u=sam
I am quite happy with it, in particular I am VERY happy the new ordering of "featured users" I think it makes 100% more sense. Additionally as a side effect it fixes this:
vs
I think the new highlighting logic is sane especially since avatars are chronological now. Besides its overridable in CSS if you don't like.
-
Was highlighted, but ... what is the Markdown?
Bah! Don't you support html in the raw? Obviously, you'd need some additional processing for quotes, but html tags is html tags.

a design philosophy thing
Just pointing out, gently, that you might want to self-examine for Stockholm Syndrome.
Filed under: I don't see any method at all, sir
-
I don't think clicking this button ⇒
should fuck up all the HTML in a post or require any kind of "special parsing". Just plop the entire raw in between
tags. That way, we can have four languages in the same post without even pressing keys on a keyboard!
-
There is a problem with the parser implementation, just plopping the raw will not cut it.
The plugin that I made, essentially does that, it takes the raw and plug it in a new
block.
It uses a custom parser plugged as a preProcessor hook in the cook pipeline that replace/bypass the built in
parserThe only drawback with the plugin right now is that it place the cooked version in the editor to preserve the fix.

Not to forget, multiquote posts work against the unfoldable reply history thing - which is IMO discourse's best feature.

Define "best"...
-
I'm with @aliceif on this. The expandable-repliee-post is a great feature. And IIRC it hasn't been broken yet, unlike say the usercards.
-
I like the ease of cross-topic linking too. And the oneboxing.

Discourse Syndrome setting in.
Filed under: I like the reply history too. And some other shit Dischorse does. But don't tell it, or it'll think we like it

cross-topic linking
WhyTF did they remove the arrows.
But yes, cross-topic-replying works pretty well here.

It's certainly possible, but I'll note in my defense that I've vehemently (and less vehemently, when on meta.d, because vehemence gets memory holed) disagreed with many of these things. Such as this circular avatar nonsense.

I'd like it more if it wasn't 10 miles long and didn't screw up my scroll position every other time I use it, confusing me as to what in the hell just happened any time there is more than 1 reply worth of history in it.
-

Every time I try to use it, it basically gets stuck in a loading spinner.

As if scrolling itself wouldn't ...

It seems like @sam's jimmies were definitely rustled, perhaps even rankled.

This was delish, enjoy your

I wanted to pick this one. I really did. However, in this case it's a much better use of my vote to join the chorus.

That sounds like a quitting offense.
We worked in that type of environment before (well, with short walls).
The area got nicknamed "The Morgue" because it was rare that anyone was ever talking back there, since you could hear everything anyone said. Now I have a split room with someone, but it's actually louder in the closed off room/cubes because people talk loudly in the halls since they can't see all the people they might be annoying.

Seems all the talk about last poster highlighting has come to an end:
https://meta.discourse.org/t/changing-or-removing-the-last-poster-avatar-highlight/27211/98?u=raceprouk
The post right after that is Jeff locking the thread. From what I can tell, it's basically to stop people criticising his decision to remove the highlight in the first place, even though several people offered workable alternatives.
-
JDGI, indeed.
-
You always win, since you can set the CSS for your site to taste.
Not if they remove the attribute that we can target to add highlight
Yes, I know, don't give them ideas...

Unless you count the PM I started off that post. I'm extending invites as requested. so far @RaceProUK and @loopback0 are included.

Yeah, this is utterly shitful. @PJH, is there some way to turn off all the fucking toasters?
-
How would we know if we want to be included if you are giving out pretty much no information.
Who is in the pm-chain?
What is the current topic?
Did it already derail?
Are any things of importance being said in said pm-chain?Filed Under: Does reading the stuff in the PM make you feel sad because JDGI?

@PJH, is there some way to turn off all the fucking toasters?
Not the ones people generally complain about. The only one I have any control over that springs to mind is the "this is an old topic you're about to reply to" one.
-
Not the ones people generally complain about.
Are there actually any toasters nobody has complained about? I have yet to see one that isn't just @codinghorror channeling Mrs Grundy.
-

The ones that pop up for new users only?

I either got kicked out or the
PM chain got Jeffed :O

-
JTFY ;)…and that term doesn't exist yet? Well, have to do something about that then…
-
turn off all the fucking toasters?
I'd be willing to bet a small amount of money there's no way to do that without code changing, because Jeff the Fascist knows how we should communicate.
-
The only one I have any control over that springs to mind is the "this is an old topic you're about to reply to" one.
I think the people who necro threads would be disappointed if you disabled that one. Having the warning that you're Doing It Wrong™ is part of the fun. Or so I'm told....

Well not disable it exactly, but it is currently (deliberately as a dig at the entire concept of it) at a rather small number.

For me at least there is a certain underlying "fuck you, Jeff" when the toasters pop up like that, because clearly no normal person ever reopens topics like that. Obviously Doing It Wrong™ and proud of it!
