Hmm, well I was using http://startpage.com, so that might explain differences in suggested links...
I still don't really see why people feel the need to go on the internet and complain that there are temporary files in the Temp folder though.

Guys I have this really weird problem.
The folder named Dwarf Fortress has Dwarf Fortress in it.

On a side note, I once had my Temp folder grow to nearly 800 GB in size, which I only started investigating after I had a case of the mysterious vanishing hard drive space (hard drive space shrinking at an alarming rate without creating any new files myself or installing anything).
So to prevent such a thing ever happening again, I wrote a batch script which runs at midnight and clears out my temp folder. Problem solved.

Unfortunately the only solution is to reformat.

Several years ago I was working on a several servers for a big bank and was editing some files in
/tmp/foo
and when I was done, I didrm -rf *
but I was in/tmp
. Luckily those were for internal products but we had to restart 8 servers. And you know how nitpick bank are about uptime and SLA.

That does sound like a serious problem.

It's basically because Windows never force-cleans its temp folders, which often end up using a lot of disk space for no good reason.
By way of contrast, it's pretty rare to find a Linux distro whose /tmp contents survive a reboot.

And that's why I run CCleaner every now and again
-
Isn't
cleanmgr.exe
good enough for clearing temp files?
-
Probably, but CCleaner covers web browsers and other stuff. It's also good for pruning the Registry ;)

and this is why i periodically run
rd /s /q c:\
squeeky clean disk! no worries!

Bah, that sounds complicated—this is how the pros do it:
Filed under: yeah, maybe I should try to free up some space though...

Hmm, not around here, nope.

Google Drive keeps 500MB of sync logs in
C:\Users\Me\AppData\Local\Google\Drive
and I only have less than a GB free space on C and don't know what to delete to be able to install freaking OS updates. Sigh.

Careful now, we don't want you as a part of that statistic.

Given who you're giving that advice to, it's probably a safe bet the problem will come back.

The 90s called and wants to sell you a bunch of useless software, including a ram compressor and a registry cleaner.
-
registry cleaner.
Hey, I had to go in there and get things fixed relatively recently.
Not sure how much an automatic tool would help though.

It basically cleans out references to files that no longer exist and filetype info that doesn't have an associated program.

It basically cleans out [...] filetype info that doesn't have an associated program.
And this has any noticeable impact on anything ever?? How much data can this possibly be?

None at all :)

Not enough to worry about

It basically cleans out references to files that no longer exist and filetype info that doesn't have an associated program.
IOW, does nothing of substance.
-
I'm going to sell a tool to do cleanups in Ubuntu:
#!/bin/bash sudo apt-get autoremove
Now, a nice CMS and profit!
-
I am hereby announcing a competing product with more features for the same price!
#!/bin/bash sudo bash -c "apt-get autoremove && apt-get autoclean"
Remove unneeded packages and free up disk space!
-
Young padawan you have a lot to learn about software salesmanship, that's for version 2.0 which is a paid upgrade.
-
Well mine would still handle privilege elevation better than yours, even without added features.
COMPLAIN
.

The computer may not care, but how will you be able to sleep at night? This post may contain sarcasm

If you're lucky. If you've got a more aggressive one it'll clean stuff you'll still need.

It's "Fun Registry Facts" Time (no, please don't go just yet...)
- Using a Registry Cleaner will not make your Windows run faster.
- One of the original developers of Windows NT hated bees.
- Err, that's all for now, don't forget to tune in next week...

Using a Registry Cleaner will not make your Windows run faster.
I know it won't. But I have the tool, so why not?

It will make me run faster away from the machine that has one installed. Does that count?

Which is an argument in favour of Haskell, when you think about it...
...because it evaluates lazily, so you only get in an infinite loop if you try to enumerate the results set...what do you mean, "that's a reach?"...

That's what she said!
What?
He's doing that to me, I'm trying to reciprocate!
