Ok, but what's the scientific explanation for you saying "outer space refuelling" when you meant "mining"?
-
Fuelling, in space.
Without needing to get it from Kerbin, which is not space.
Thus fuelling in outer space.
But yeah, mining for fuel is also a reasonable description.
-
*The units of this particular derivation will be in seconds. To convert to m/s, multiply by 9.8m/s2.
For kerbin. Anyone found gravitational acceleration constants for other bodies?
-
well it seems to be offline right now but when it comes back the gravitational constants for the other planets are listed in the wiki:

I believe values in m/s are always going to be against Kerbin, at least the values MechJeb reports.
Either way, g isn't something we have control over. Mass fraction and Isp, on the other hand, are.

well.... no. you deltaV is actually independant of the gravity of the planet you are on.
your TWR is dependant on local gravity, but deltaV isn't.
Thrust is an acceleration, and you carry X amount of fuel a little math gives you how much you will change your velocity by burning that fuel.... no need to consult what planet you are on for that.
of course just because you have the deltaV that doesn't mean you can go anywhere with it. (good luck launching an ion powered craft without a booster to get the TWR up)
little simplified, but not too much.
-

Maybe not, but it is an awful useful value for figuring out needed TWR for certain stages of a mission. As @accalia pointed out: knowing the delta-v isn't always enough.
-
i've been sitting on this thread watching those edits....
as much as discourse is annoying those live updates are awesome!
-
Yeah, trying to get semi-scientific data posted correctly on mobile with a migraine is a Belgium-ing bitch.
-
ah..... and now i find myself feeling guilty for laughing at your annoyance (not you, just your annoyance) while you were battling a migraine.
:'(

No need. Annoyance is better if laughed at.

My suspicion was that the terms cancelled out, but I can't find a source to back it up.

My ion landers have little problem taking off on their own except on Kerbin, Duna, Eve, Jool, Laythe, and Tylo!

Oh, absolutely. TWR is a pretty simple problem in the general case, because you can land safely on a surprising number of celestials with a Kerbin TWR of only ~0.3. The places where it gets tricky are Laythe (although you can use jet engines), Tylo (where multiple stages for descent and ascent are pretty much mandatory), and Eve (where you need a minimum of 12km/s at 1.8 TWR).

I have to agree with you there, as difficult as it is to admit there's something good about it.

indeed. i was however, referring to taking off from Kerbin. although i do admit that was less than clear from context.

neither could i, so i grabbed a piece of paper and did some math. it turned out to be so simple that it wasn't even worth translating into latex and finding a mathtex to png converter to make pretty pictures with.
-
Hmmm....
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!
Now, to wait 3 years for transit. Meanwhile, an ion lander checks out Pol. I'd forgotten that solar panels are less efficient out by Jool, so this one can only half-throttle without depleting its (reasonably generous) energy supply.
-
Something like that. I don't have jets yet so I'm using entry-level liquid-fuel rockets. The center of mass moves quite a bit as it burns fuel.
ah. trick i've used for that in the past is wings on radial decouplers (with struts for reinforcement)
use em low and heavy and once you get high and unstable eject the front ones to make it balance again.
-
Well it wasn't exactly a proper spaceplane, I just needed some aerodynamic control so I can coast to the proper place for the contract. In the end, I eject most of the "plane" and land the capsule like any other rocket. I think it only costs around 15,000 so it does well at all the nearby Kerbin survey contracts.
IIRC it had 2 of the short solid fuel boosters to get it off the ground, one of the intermediate boosters to get it roughly on the correct ballistic trajectory, and a small liquid fuel tank (winged) with one of the basic thrusters for final guidance. By the time it flips around on me, I'm more-or-less in the correct location so it doesn't matter.
But I just rediscovered Space Engineers after reading all the updates that have happened in the past couple months. KSP is likely getting shelved for a while. I have an SE server to wipe and start fresh on.
-
But I just rediscovered Space Engineers
How is that? I've considered picking it up at one point or another (though my Steam backlog is already massive).
-
Anyone other than Blakey tried Pixel Piracy and have an opinion on it?
-
It can be a lot of fun. I downloaded the current version though and the new procedural asteroid fields didn't work, so I didn't start playing again. I normally run a dedicated server and have been wanting to start a PvP server too.
But be prepared to lose hours and hours of time while welding.
-
How is that?
The ship construction and physics is good, but there's no game in that game.
Worth a play if you don't pay too much, but don't expect the fun to last longer than 3-4 hours.

Might be a good 3-4 hour break after the 950+ hours I've logged on KSP.
-
mmm pixel piracy looks good.
new game. almost no parts. trying to build an airplane without wheels
so far so goodmmm the parachute is gonne after boosters separation.
i'm gonna make it!
well.... nope.
poor jeb

I think I've logged 200+ hours already in SE. Most of which was multiplayer which is where the game shines.
-
but.... the plane had parachutes.
i need to find another jeb.

Give it a kerbal day or three. He should respawn.
Next time, recruit another pilot for test flights. ;)

Fair enough. I was playing with buddies and we were bored as shit after 3 hours. I have no idea what you guys are doing for 200+, but hey whatever.

Last friday I discovered teamviewer can handle hearthstone remote play streaming over the net.
Today I am contemplating doing the same with kerbal, to play on my lunch break.
will the extra latency make me rip my hair out? has anyone tried it before?
-
will the extra latency make me rip my hair out?
possibly. but then people do manage to play and enjoy the game at 10fps because of how big they make their ships....
-
I present this:
Nothing too peculiar from that angle. Let's try another.
The rocket tried to launch, but the capsule stubbornly stayed in place. Needless to say, everything else went boom, and this was the end result.
-
You've got that Star Trek phasing technology working? Good job. Well, perhaps not, since the rocket blew up.
-

Yeah, it's more like technology to make an object immovable.
I call it the fixed-point-o-matic.
-
Does anybody know how to work the new "Small Holding Tank" part? I see it stores ore, and there's another part to break ore into fuel, but how do you get the ore? There's no drills.
EDIT: nevermind, the tech tree for older games is all fucked. I think I'm going to start a new science campaign game.
EDIT EDIT: Holy shit they made Kerbal HARD
-
I saw the patch notes about aerodynamics. If that means they've integrated FAR, this could get interesting...
-
They added the need for heat shields, which is fine. But you get them BEFORE you have SAS to keep the heat shield pointed in the right direction. And stability is a huge problem in the current release.
I've tried heat-shielding a re-entry 3 times now and each time the ship disintegrates because it slides around.
I'm thinking I might do science mode but cheat my science-points up. So I can still play like in sandbox, but keep track of the science points optionally if I feel like it
-
Sounds like you need to take the KSC Grand Tour. It'll be annoying without spaceplane parts but there's a lot of science to be had there.
-

a rediculous amount really.
and so few people actually try for it.
;-)

I just edited the savefile to bring my science up.
None of my old crafts fly now. The moon landing spaceplane I built literally two days ago now disintegrates if I try to turn. Very annoying.
On the plus side, turbojets seem to provide almost twice as much thrust as before for some reason. (Which probably led to the disintegration, since it was doing 385 m/s at 5000m altitude.)
-
High speed at low altitude used to be impossible as the atmosphere was soup.
Also, drag now only affects parts that are actually in the airstream, so nosecones actually reduce drag now instead of increasing it like before. The engines aren't any more powerful but the drag is totally different, in magnitude and modelling.
I have to completely relearn how to fly.
-
I started a new campaign since my tech tree was shot to hell. The new contract handling is … interesting. Every now and then, contracts are forced into your "Active" track, but fortunately don't count against your limit. Also, there are new Tourist contracts. So far, I've only had to take tourists on sub-orbital flights, but it's made things interesting.
Also, I just found this: https://eucl3d.com/ksp

I need to get back in this game. I uh... might not have actually purchased the game on a suggestion to hold off because the devs were being retards during beta or something but I really liked what I played of it and decided to buy it once it came out. Too bad I already went over my Steam quota for the month with the Killing Floor 2 purchase...
-
i found it more intuitive than before.
this is clearly based on blakey gnat flies like a charm (look at jeb's face! look at it!)
i still suck at spaceplanes, but this time is more fun:darn, i suck at landing things:
-
I'm amused at how the MET changed by only 4 seconds between those screenshots
-
Since you're playing it, have you noticed the FPS slows waaay down in the assembly buildings? When you launch it's smooth as glass, but while building rockets it feels like 10 FPS max.
-
nope, but i only built ships with few parts...
let me test it when i'm at home
-
I wasn't sure if it was a regression or just my computer. Number of parts didn't seem to matter.
-
then no, it worked like it used to. with a few buttons more
-
-
Gnat no longer works.
This is about the highest speed I hit. Ran this speed and alt. until it ran out of gas. :(
EDIT: tried tweaking it.
That's the best it'll do without putting on bigger fuel tanks.
EDIT EDIT: 1x6 solar panels can't be retracted anymore?
EDIT EDIT EDIT: Aaaa and the wingtips blow off during re-entry. Have to start from scratch with this patch. :(
-
Aaaaah I think the Gnat is dead for good! :(((((((((
