How to grind an entire corporation to a halt
-
The entire company's email just did this.
-
Well, that is going to make it harder for you to get the memo about the new TPS reports...
-
We drank the Google cool aid. Everything is in Google Calendar. Google Docs. Etc.
-
I rather like Google Apps, and anything is better than Exchange, even if shit like this happens occasionally...
-
-
Even Lotus Notes?
<deadpan>Even that. -snicker- -snort- -snicker- BWA HA HA HA HA!
Nope, couldn't keep a straight face...
-
Maybe.. stop redirecting your messages to a non-Gmail mailbox?
-
Even Lotus Notes? ducks
You know how I always say we should not speak in absolutes because there is something out there that will disprove your statement? Yeah, this is one of those times.
Well played sir, well played.

I don't like Google Apps. If it were a standalone app, you'd call it crap. But when it's crap-on-a-webpage, people lower their standards. Even yahoo mail and calendar are better than gmail's, not to mention that awful hangouts thing that seems to be obligatory to coordinate appointments. It may be better than Exchange, but I wouldn't call it a great experience.
-

I actually prefer it to anything else out there. I like the interface and it works perfectly well for our purposes. I also appreciate that their acquisition of Postini makes for an almost entirely spam-free inbox. I have no complaints.
-
Our corporate setup doesn't use hangouts. Legacy chat and calendar.
Which is infinitely superior
-
Found this. Seems like old news.

Our company drank the MS koolaid.
At least one day a week we have some Exchange outage.
We are forced to use Lync, which must have been designed by a retard since it doesn't even support offline message or properly working on multiple devices at the same time (which device will it send to? Who knows).
Sure we have office and I think the web version. But everything online based has a low-end support if it isn't IE10, which is OSX and Linux users.
The majority of our R&D are Linux users.I'd take google over that. At least they have a concept of functional browser applications, unlike MS.

Slashdot's leaking again.

Shut up. I've been here for years (just was too lazy to make an account).
Oh, I got it. I mentioned MS, so you had to defend it. I was kind of expecting it, just not within a minute of my post.

If that were true, you would have anticipated and pre-empted my witty reply.

Nonsense. That image was clearly taken on the 32nd of May almost three years ago.
-
The image includes the fact that @Weng was facing west when he took it.
-
Nope. Just now. I presume some hamhamded attempt to attach a compliance surveillance appliance was involved.

I was trying to use Skype on my Nexus 4 and computer at the same time, doesn't really work. I didn't have a headset and had an incoming call. Having Skype installed my phone "rang" as well so answered. But trying to receive the text messages on the computer would cause the voice call to drop out. We do a lot of "click this link and we'll discuss it" over Skype. Someone took my headset but I got another one fairly quickly after that.
-
Our company drank the MS Cloudy koolaid to the bottom.
After more then a year we're still running smooth. Hardly a hickup or downtime. Speed has increased drastically compared to when we started.
We are forced to use Lync, it works but is annoying.
But everything online based just works in Chrome, FireFox and IE 9.
Have a screenshot of my excel doc in both FF & Chrome.
-
Hey, now. I just got off that piece of crap ~3 months ago. Don't even joke about that junk.
-
He just criticized a couple Microsoft products and said their company used Linux. He didn't post any crappy sarcasm like "Micro$oft" or even implications that IE is bad. Your comment makes no sense.

I've had problems with Skype just sending messages between family members. My sister sent several IMs to my father and they never arrived. Apparently it's a common problem (or it was one year ago, maybe it's fixed now).Microsoft are clearly putting all their eggs in one basket with Skype, which is not a bad idea because maintaining several platforms that do the the exact same thing is pointless, but it means their one product should work perfectly, and it doesn't.

Maybe it works better in their Belgium datacenter than it does in the US? Here, Office 365 is total rubbish. The clients that we have that went to it, reverted within 6 months. The experience has not reflected the hype for them. Clients on Google Apps all seem to love it though. No complaints there.

I am not the OP. We have never had an outage, that I have noticed.

I am not @flwf. I don't understand why you're telling me this.
Would you please remove me from this list?

Congratulations! You are now subscribed to CAT FACTS and will receive quarter hourly updates.
Did you know that cats are strict carnivores and giving them milk is non-advisable? Me-wow!

stop texting me! you're costing me $1.50 every time you text me!

The old shit topic is over here.

Don't worry about him. Every crap that MS produce is gold according to blakeyrat. And everything open source is pure crap.
And .NET is the best thing in the world. Now, when he will learn that MS as open sourced .NET, his head will explode ;)

Doubtful that there is even a .be datacenter ...

I was being facetious and basically just wanted to trip the filter. ;)

i'm really fuzz on european geography, but they have three in Amsterdam.
if that's not in belgium then it's at least pretty close....

A few 100km to far to the north. That is in the Netherlands.

hmm... well it's closer to you than it is to me so i'm calling close enough but not actually there.
:-P

At least one day a week we have some Exchange outage.
Odds are your company is somehow TRWTF here. I've worked at places with Exchange for most of the last 15 years and outages are pretty rare.
-
my witty reply.
You keep telling yourself that. When you beat one of those orc chiefs maybe we'll believe you.
-
Oh, I don't doubt my company is responsible for a number of WTFs. Unfortunately I'm not in their IT dept and they never say why there was an outage. They say they will review what happened and make sure it doesn't happen again.
But I don't know how many times their SAN can fail or network switches or what else is going down in the process but it is really a weekly occurrence.
I don't think they are capable of running an Exchange instance and should give it to someone else.
But OWA crashing on IE due to memory usage was a big laugh (I get my mail via IMAP, so I didn't experience that).
-
He knows. But he is so deep in love with MS that he sees their open source as a good thing.
I do program in C# for one of my projects (using mono), so it is good news for me. Mono has a number of areas that they haven't implemented and if they actually do that then I can remove code that becomes redundant.
Then again I'm forced to use an older .NET runtime because my code plugs in to unity and I think they are still at 3.0.
-

same, but for 5 years not 15.
-

I worked at a place with Exchange for 5 years and outages were daily. But then that was an overloaded SBS box. Spreading some load to samba on Linux reduced crashes: I guess serving files and serving email at the same time is too hard for a 10-15 employee company?
-

How much horsepower do you need to server files and email to ONLY 15 employee ?
Is windows that much inefficient ?

Who knows. He said it was overloaded. I'm just saying, it seems likely that was the problem, no? Run too much software on a Unix box, it'll probably fall over, too.
-

That's my experience too. Provided you've got the full release version and a sufficiently-well provisioned set of hardware to host it on, Exchange seems pretty good. It does IMAP and SMTP quite well enough. (I hear it does calendaring too, but I don't use that part for complicated reasons that aren't linked to Exchange and are instead linked to external people I collaborate with.)
