Android battery symbol

Continuing the discussion from I broked my Chrome on Android:
Not coding, but putting it here as per usual on this forum. Google is not being helpful (or I'm failing at searching) so I'm bugging you guys. This is a screenshot of Chrome on my phone:
I like that battery icon, but apparently you can't change them without something almost to the level of burning a new ROM. If I want to see the battery percentage, I have to get it as a number next to the icon, thus taking up extra space--and I can't turn off the battery notification, or I lose the percent as well. :/ It would probably drive me up the wall to have the full date in the notification bar like that, though.

I've never seen that battery icon in an Android before, and I'm currently running 4.5. I wonder if it's a change made by the phone manufacturer. @Onyx: What kind of phone do you have?
-

I customized it to do that. I think it was clock only by default.
@abarker it's a Galaxy S3 mini, which is the less important bit. The important bit is it's running Cyanogenmod 11. It's not stock Cyanogenmod (well, as far as you can call something like that "stock"), I think that's the standard Cyanogenmod feature:

He said it's a custom rom. It was probably baked in by whoever did that. I vaguely remember from rooting my last phone that it wasn't anything like simple to change the icon.
Also, regarding @chubertdev's link, I love the "scratch it some more!" "suggestion".
-
Oh, that's a neat feature. The stock GS3/GSNoteII rom doesn't let you do that and I wish it did. All I want is the number, because the stock icon is useless, but noo, you can't get that.
-
I recall being able to do that via AOSP too......
-

Isn't Cyanogen built off AOSP? That would explain it.

No idea about that tbh. I wanted Samsung guff off of it, found a Cyanogenmod 11 build, it's stable, runs fast, didn't bother with flashing since.

They've come a long way since I used them on my G1.

I have the percentage as a number next to the battery on my Galaxy S5. Running Android 5 on my Nexus 5 & 7 and stock Android doesn't seem to have the option for anything other than the battery icon any more.
-

That's what I have too, but like I said, I want just the number. The "stock" (I don't know if it's GOogle or Samsung) icon is basically useless.
-
I think it's Google to blame for the stock icon as I've got three Android devices and the only device with the actual number is the only one that isn't a Nexus device.
-
I''ve only got 5 months left in my contract and I'm seriously thinking about replacing the stock Samsung rom. But then I think about how many different ones are out there and decided to wait.
I must have tried most of the major Desire HD/Inspire 4G ones.
-
I actually like the Samsung ROM on my S5. The one with my S3 annoyed me and the only reason I left it on was the warranty but ended up using a root exploit and part modding anyway but all I've done on the S5 is download another keyboard.
-
just spent half an hour looking for it on my nexus 5.... ca't find it.
either i was imagining it or it was removed with a later kitkat update. i'm leaning towards the former as i've had cyanogen devices before (TF701t)
-
It was there on a previous version but seems long gone on Android 5.
I remember it on my Nexus 5 and that's never had any ROMs other than the current stock Android on it.
-
haven't upgraded phone to android 5 yet. need to soon. it's een asking for a couple of days now.
-
Neither my 5 or 7 asked, had to do it manually from factory images on both.
-
i havent rooted or unlocked Nazara (my phone).
hmm.... lets see if Soverign (Nexus 7) has the update ready yet..... nope. might have to do that one manually. i unlocked the bootloader and had rooted it earlier but reverted to stock for 4.4.4...
-
Neither were unlocked before going to Android 5. Nothing in either that wasn't backed up and my S5 is my main Android device anyway so no major issue wiping both Nexuses to unlock the boot loader and lock it again after.
-

Same build as mine (except it's an LTE S3). The only problem is that when I try to charge the phone while it's turned off, it gets stuck with screen perpetually on.
Other than that, it's a really awesome custom ROM. I'll be holding on to it at least until Android 5 rolls out and someone manages to get a working build for S3.

I use T.E.A.M. Battery Bar. It draws a line a couple of pixels tall (configurable) across the top of the screen.

-
Hey, I remember having an app that did exactly that on my father's Pocket PC with WM5.0. Good to see old things come back.
-

I like PowerLine - less configurable, but has more meters (battery, processor/memory usage, UL/DL, signal, and some more). The free version lets you have two bars, with the paid one you can put like 10 of them around the edges.
-
That sounds worth a try. I have Network Monitor for UL/DL in the notification area, but it tends to get killed doe to my Moto G's lack of memory

Yeah, I had that on my hx4705, but I didn't like it for some reason.
-
my Moto G's lack of memory
Every time I think something like "Oh, heck, let's try Republic Wireless and get a Moto G because it's fairly cheap" I hear something like this and realize I'd probably miss the power of my Note II.
I suppose I could get a tablet in addition to a lower-end phone.
-
Overall, I'm really happy with it. It shows phones have reached the point where "good enough" can be had for not much over £100. It's just that multi tasking takes a bit of a hit when any decently complicated app forces most of the background apps to quit.
A decent Discourse session leads to the home screen and app drawer dying. None of the games I have on it even do that.
-
Interesting.
-
-
And sadly, not even remotely surprising.
Oh, I meant the phone in general, not that Discurse can kill it.

There's that too, but I was saying what we were all thinking
-
For what it's worth, I have an app that does the percentage. Lives over in the notification area.

Ugh, that sounds horrible.
-
l, I'm really happy with it
I have one too. Highly recommended for its price. Although I don't get why the new version has no 4G, SD or NFC. I would preferred that above an increase in screen size
-
Although I don't get why the new version has no 4G
How fast is the 3G? Obviously the new shiny is better, but if the 3G's pretty fast I could probably live with it.
What about the E and the X? Republic Wireless sells those three models, the 2013 versions, and charges about half what my current bill is, on the same network.
-
E is a bit underpowered.
X is Nice but with a higher price tag.
I have the G with 4G and SD.
-
Being on the left instead of the right is horrible?
-
I don't like apps that put things in the notification area permanently.
-
It's better in the more recent Android versions with different priority levels, the ability to individually dismiss notifications and expand by swiping down.
-
I don't like apps that put things in the notification area permanently.
This is what I was thinking of. I like to keep the notification area clean. Permanent stuff on the right is OK, although I prefer to minimize that.
-

I just have the Android percentage...
-
Are all running and fitness tracking apps so fucking god awful at handling noise in the altitude data?
-
No, Endomondo seems to work well for me.

or recognising Short.MIN_VALUE as a bad elevation point....
-
My house is just below sea level ...

I'll have to give that a shot when I get a phone with less useless gps. I'm pretty sure my S3 has bum gps since the day I bought it. Putting it in a south facing shirt pocket kills the signal. Hell, standing in an open field on the south facing side of a hill with nothing but clear sky to be seen usually requires 5 or 6 resets and 10 minutes to get a lock.
God forbid you try to use it in a car.
-
In case you guys were wondering, I have submitted it to the front page, and it has appeared in an Error'd. And I completely flubbed the description, and got burnt in the comments.
Oh well.

Odd, my current phone is an S3, and while it's about on its last month, the GPS has been working fine. Although I have a utility that seems to improve its accuracy.
