🙅 THE BAD IDEAS THREAD

{hacksaws} ⋂ {power tools} ≠ ∅
This is definite pendantry. If you were replying to anyone else, it might not be dickweedery, but you're just enabling him.

Do you want some russian kid with nmap and metasploit to overwrite your washing machine's firmware to make it send spam and sniff your laptop's traffic for CC numbers?
Or lock my washing inside the machine and hold it hostage.
-
Or lock my washing inside the machine and hold it hostage.
Mine already does that until it decides it's done with them.

I inadvertently put the child lock* on ours and it was even more insistent on keeping the door locked than ever.
*I thought it would stop the door from being opened from the inside, like on a car, but this is not the case.

I recommend stopping any magic spells before trying to wash your clothes. It's a pain when they keep trying to escape.

Wash, rinse, Rincewind, repeat?

I count 8, meaning there was a stop to reload in the middle of doing this. You'd think that would have been enough for someone to go "maybe this isn't a good idea".
and it looks like the last two bullets from the reload were possibly of a higher grain count as they deformed the bullets in front of them significantly (as well as the barrel of the gun)
Or i really don't know the physics that go on inside the barrel of a gun very well.. either way they did have higher energy than the earlier bullets!

I merely sought to demonstrate that
{hacksaws} ⋂ {power tools} ≠ ∅
I'd be more worried if this wasn't true:
{hacksaws} ⋂ {power tools} ∉ ∅

Starting a Youtube ad campaign and not making sure the link your campaign uses, well ... Works!
I almost got that vacuum

Today I've learned that, given enough pedantic dickweedery, we can get a UID generator out of blakeyrat.

Obligatory:

That sucks.

Most vacuums do ;)

Not sure if this has sound or not as found when at work (also I guess it could go under Stupid Ideas or Good Ideas depending on your outlook).
EDIT: Per @Zecc the video can be loud, or quiet and then suddenly loud so take care.
Basically put some hydrogen peroxide rockets on a modded bike, hit go. Reportedly hits 207 mph (~333 Km/H).

Trying to seize another country's ccTLD:

Not sure if this has sound or not
Yes, there is. So say the earphones that I'm glad are not on my ears
-
I take it that it's loud, sorry about that.
-
It was basically a lot of WHOOSH type noise. So maybe there's a use for it...
-
Well, I wasn't bothered much, but you may want to add a warning to your post.
It goes from a few seconds of silence to really loud.
-
Did so, thanks for the note.
-
domains are another version of bitcoins. is that mean you can't seize bitcoins?

Crazy people are fun to watch.
indeed they are.
/me is making another batch of popcorn

Crazy people are fun to watch.
Bad Idea: TDWTF road trip to watch a candidate debate next time Swampy runs for office.
-
Bad Idea: Minecraft servers operated by PETA, with mods preventing animals from getting hurt.

It does look like he's going a solid 60 mph or so.

"Oh, you don't like dying of hunger? TOO BAD NO STEAK FOR YOU."
-
I don't know whether to post this in the song of the day thread, the good ideas thread, or the bad ideas thread, because it's a little of everything.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDWJFMXOY88
Just think of HOW FUCKING LONG it must have taken to make that.
-
Bad Idea: Minecraft servers operated by PETA, with mods preventing animals from getting hurt.
The mods try to prevent you from hurting them? Or the video game logic makes it impossible. If it is the former, I see a ton of trolling in their future.
-
Are you confusing game modifications ("mods") with moderators ("mods")?
In any case, I hope they have locked the abandoned slaughterhouse and circus from being modified, because those are prime targets for trolling.
-
Right, but I mean, how much do you kill if you get to 130°? 140°? etc?
Bacteria doesn't start dying until 140° (specifically: the death rate doesn't exceed the growth rate until about that temperature); you'd end up with more bacteria than you started with if you heated something up to 140° then let it cool, because you're heating it up through the ‘danger zone’ – where the number of bacteria can double every 20 minutes – without killing any.
Related: medium rare steak only reaches about 130° at the center. It is theoretically possible to cook steak medium rare and kill
all99.9% of bacteria, but it involves cooking it (sous-vide) at precisely 141° for at least two hours.
-
Come January, fifteen University of Pennsylvania creative-writing students and I will sit silently in a room with nothing more than our devices and a Wi-Fi connection, for three hours a week, in a course called “Wasting Time on the Internet.”
...
For the past decade, I’ve been teaching a class at Penn called “Uncreative Writing,” where students are forced to plagiarize, appropriate, and steal texts that they haven’t written and claim them as their own.

This post is deleted!

Are you confusing game modifications ("mods") with moderators ("mods")?
Yep. Long day yesterday. Thank you for clarifying that to my muddled mind.
I feel like the mods (correct term this time) should be thoroughly play-tested. I think it needs to be a server completely full of people trying to kill the digital animals.

Yeah, but the primary concern with steaks is the potential surface contamination. If you know what you're doing, you don't need to worry so much about the internal temperature. The internal temperature guidelines are much more important for ground meats and poultry.

I suspect they've just tweaked the server such that animals do not spawn. Problem solved! >.>
Also amusing: People routinely starving to death because there are only two vegan food options that don't require multiple days to cultivate, and mushrooms and watermelons are both rare.
-
Apparently they're making farms available.
If you are near a mooshroom or roofed forest or a swamp, you can get mushroom soup fast (in the swamp, you have to get lucky enough to find both kinds of mushrooms.)
-
Aaaand, just got a 500 error saying my post couldn't be made, but I see it right up there.
-
mooshroom
Mooshroom biomes are even more rare than regular mushrooms :) I usually tend the base when we play on my multiplayer server, it's not hard to get set up once you have a base but wandering the world at random without food is a bad idea.
-
Yeah, I have never ever seen a Mooshroom biome. I'm a server op and I don't think any of my players have ever found one either.
-
I gave my players a breeding pair of the special cattle as a reward the first time we beat The End, because the poem didn't feel special enough.
They were escaped or dead within the week :( Our ranching skills at the time left much to be desired, plus it was when there were like four open bug reports about animals glitching out of fences.
-
PETA always does stunts like that so people will talk about them.
Bad idea: giving them more attention
-
Did they put chicks wearing lettuce into their world?
-
Mooshroom biomes are even more rare than regular mushrooms
No kiddin'. But that's what /r/minecraftseeds is for.
I have a couple of times had worlds generate with a 'shroom biome at spawn.
-
Yeah, I have never ever seen a Mooshroom biome. I'm a server op and I don't think any of my players have ever found one either.
If you have the world seed you can use amidst to look for them. Unmined can examine your actual world files and produce a map of what's been generated, so you'd be able to see if there was one.
-
plus it was when there were like four open bug reports about animals glitching out of fences.
Animals still glitch out of fences under certain circumstances.
I found a great post on /r/minecraft a few weeks back, but stupidly didn't bookmark it, so I can't remember the exact design, but it used fences and water to make an essentially escape-proof pen. The animals don't suffocate because they can't get to the fence, because the water pushes them away.
-
Yeah, but it's a lot less bad than it used to be. Used to be you'd put a half dozen chickens in a pen and come back the next day and there'd be nothing left. The mooshrooms were before we started digging pits to keep animals in.
-
I suspect they've just tweaked the server such that animals do not spawn. Problem solved! >.>
Which, coincidentally is just what would happen to most farm animals if everyone went vegan. They are so domesticated that the only reason they exist is because we raise them for food. No meat industry, no farm animals.
