During an ARTEP omeone on the OPFOR used one of those packs, and I was able to drop the hammer on them ( simulated of course ) using my nifty I/R goggles...

A few things. Were this a lounge post, I'd go into greater detail, but I think it can be summarized thus:
- People receive strong and subtle pressures from society to do various things that may be contrary to their own interests or even society's interests at large. Under scrutiny, many of these pressures fall apart. I think you know what I'm getting at here, but I'll give a separate, specific example: now that I'm in a good financial state, many people are telling me that I should take vacations overseas and see the world. I have yet to hear a convincing answer to a very simple question: why?
- The world is capricious and absolutely not fair in how qualities, virtues, and problems are assigned to various people.
- Nobody is entitled to a loving partner or a lasting relationship.
- You can't approach finding a relationship like you would a business or programming project - it is not subject to deadlines and increasing effort to meet a slipping deadline often has the opposite effect.
- What governs attraction and dynamics between humans has no rhyme or reason. This can be particularly frustrating to someone who values logic and reason, but coming to accept that it's a rigged game is quite liberating.
- Humanity as a whole is fucked for many reasons I won't go into here. However, in your travels, you will occasionally find like-minded individuals who will help you find a meaningful existence.
- Very few people know what the hell they are doing.
- The person best equipped to determine what's in your best interest is probably you.

Because it's fun, and when you learn things about how other people do stuff sometimes you can use some of it when you get back home to make your own life better. For example, I learned I like tea better than coffee, and rice balls travel better than sandwiches.

Are these people also telling you that you should spend most of your time with locals and stay away from tourist spots if you go? Because all of the good reasons for taking vacations overseas really depend on that.

@boomzilla Good point: Most advice people give you is based on what they would want to be told in your position. You can make your own decisions about how similar you are to the advice-giver and what that means about the quality of the advice.

@antiquarian Case in point: If the person giving me advice is the kind of person for whom travel is meaningless because they can sleep all day in their own house and save money while achieving the same effect, I can safely ignore what they have to say on the subject ;)

Rights aren't gender specific. The resulting laws and regulations have to be, but that's just the implementation of rights.
So, I guess I would be, if in those terms, "Against Situations Where Males Are Having Their Rights Infringed". But then, stripping away the gender is obvious. "Against Situations Where People Are Having Their Rights Infringed".

No, it has a reason.
Familiarity, which is a measure of trust, and therefore all that entails.
This works in the reverse to create MOST discrimination, which tend towards unintended consequences.
This does not make you [topic]-ist/phobic. And I think having that distinction be obliterated is why there is the current culture war going on.

Most people assume everybody else thinks the same as them and wants the same things.
It's inconceivable for them that someone may have different preferences.Explaining that you don't like traveling is useless, they will just stare at you like morons and repeat "traveling is great!". Been there, done that.
