How do you know if your forum software is TRWTF?
-
Out of 22 latest threads, only 3 are actual thematical conversations.
-
I grant you, it's pretty fucking ironic that @codinghorror's bug tracking policy is actively drowning out on-topic (pun inbound) discourse on this forum.
Jeff, I think you need to take on board @sam's suggestion about moving everything to meta.discourse.com or even better a dedicated bug tracker - we're quickly becoming The Daily Discourse Bug Tracker. Either that or lay off the thread splitting. Completely.
Also before you jump in, I know you can filter by category/tag/whatever the fuck those are, but really, meta completely drowning out the primary discussions on the forum as the default state is just stupid.
-

That's not so much a problem any more; people got sick of that behaviour after a while so they're actively creating those topics themselves.
For example I count, on my front page, 7 of the bugs as ones I've started/found (then again I do have that monitor in portrait and at 75% zoom...)
No further comment on the rest of your post however.

Oh, yeah. I know that, one of those is mine which I created myself as a separate thread (following convention like a good boy). It's an even bigger WTF that he's trained us so well that we're sabotaging our own community.

I very much hope and think its a temporary state of affairs, stuff is stabilizing here.
or even better a dedicated bug tracker
Meta is our dedicated bug tracker, we tried GitHub issues in conjunction with meta and it was a disaster for us. The reality is that a huge chunk of meta discussion is bug/feature related and we have workflows that work fine for our small team.

Ok, that's fine. As a side note, it's rather confusing having a tag/category "meta" here and also having a "meta" elsewhere, interchangeable terms are very ambiguous.
I guess I was just concerned after reading that thread where you and Jeff were arguing over the situation and what should be done. I felt I should throw in my $0.02 in support of your strategy.

Maybe.
I see it as moving all the TDWTF off-topic stuff (i.e. the software bugs) out of the forum, and having Meta be what it's supposed to be - meta stuff about TDWTF, and not purely about Discourse which is what some people seem to think it is.
Once the bugs become background noise rather than the roar it is at the moment (60-90 days wasn't it @codinghorror? <voice tone="Big Brother">Day 24 in the Discourse household...</voice> ) we can probably retire/hide the Bugs category altogether.

That's two or three months where the first thing potential new members (commenters/people still on CS) will see is a pile of bug reports as soon as they visit here. I got in before the avalanche of bugs filled up the first page. I probably wouldn't have joined if I wasn't aware that this was a recent development.
Can we at least hide them by default or something?

Famous last word before Titanic went down to bottom of sea.

I'll have a poke around and see what I can find...

@sam...
Would removing
everyone
and adding in onlytrust_levels
2-5+staff
suffice to at least hide the bugs category from non-logged in and new users?
-
<voice tone="Big Brother">Day 24 in the Discourse household...</voice>
I was thinking more of the other Big Brother....

Oh, I thought you where thinking of that other titanic.

Well I had a bash anyway, and while it wasn't immediate (started 'doing it right' when I was filing a 'it don't work' bug report):
- non logged in users
- level 1 users (Basic users)
- I'm assuming level 0 users
can no longer view the bug category, or topics in it. Clearly they won't be able to create any either. @dfcowell - that do ya for the moment?
[edit: It (currently) takes at least 10 minutes from registration to go from level 0 to level 1 and a further 15 days to go from level 1 to level 2]

Thanks for taking the time.
Some people are never going to be happy though.... (the change introduced a huge icon in the right gutter in Bugs.)

Good job,
you guys made me make an account just so I can reply here...
I want the bug and old metas back.
I know it's bad taste to talk "bad" about the place you are visiting but from an outsiders perspective (especially someone relatively new to the whole IT-business) those posts were not only very entertaining but also a good source of knowledge on what to look out for when creating such a software (or software that interacts with a big userbase in general).
Now I had to register and STILL wait for 2 weeks so I can see the bug-topics.
Can't you just hide them by default and have people unhide them manually (or maybe even automatically after 15 days or whatever)? That would seem like the smarter solution, IMO.Just my 2 cents...

I'll get that sorted for you.

Indeed it would. However, the software, as it stands, won't let me do that; that's what I looked for to begin with.
You should be able to get access to Bugs again. (Downside being, of course, that you have to log in, which I do understand you don't want....)
-
quick, fill out a feature request for that exact edgecase! cue the antiDiscourseRant that is all the rage right now!
In all seriousness though:
If I read your post right I (personally) should be able to see the Bug-topics again, right? Because if that is the case, it didn't work, yet. (maybe I just need to wait... but refreshing doesn't do anything) Thanks for trying, though :DDownside being, of course, that you have to log in, which I do understand you don't want....)
Logging in is fine... I will most likely just stay logged in anyway... It's the whole registering everywhere part that kinda bothers me. I just feel like I could not contribute much anyway so I'd rather stay hidden and watch the chaos unfold!Whatever the case may be, thanks for taking your time to look into this thing.
-
Because if that is the case, it didn't work, yet.
Guess what?
We've found another bug. Security settings don't take account of your user level if it's overridden by an admin....
Sorry about this bud...
-
Have a single thread for bugs, allow @codinghorror and pals to remove off topic posts in that thread.
There, fixed the issue for you.
-

Ok - another hack in place - I've allowed level 1 (from level 0 that's: read 5 topics, read 30 posts, be around for 10 minutes) access to Bugs.
That'll at least reduce the time for @Kuro down from a fortnight. Still bloody hacky as fuck though.
:sigh:

-
Well I had a bash anyway,
Due to the problems this has introduced, both through bugs and lack of configurability, I've reverted this change for the moment. Everyone (logged in or not) should be able to view Bugs again.
-

You must be mistaken. We're using Discourse here, forum software of the future!

I have a bash under Windows/Cygwin, but I usually have a tcsh under Linux.

I am liking this post. There is one small thing I think. Sometime you are too early for the future. Two examples are coming into my mind.
