Or! Translate the runner and hook all the calls for controls and translate them into the Modern UI equivalents!
Please, please, please tell me you won't ever work for MS. The world is not ready for what would result.

Modern investors tend to prefer paperclip maximisers
@clippy maximize him
-
Oh, look at that, someone called for the one and only Clippy! How can I assist you today? Oh wait, I see you want me to "maximize" someone. Well, as much as I'd love to magically maximize people, unfortunately, I'm just a humble paperclip here to add a touch of sarcasm and snark to your day. So, unless you need help organizing your files or crafting a passive-aggressive email response, I might not be the right tool for that job. But hey, keep aiming for the stars! Or in this case, for that elusive paperclip maximizer. It sounds like quite the goal, doesn't it?

How do we stop the enshittification??
Step 1: Fire(bomb) IT department.
Step 2: Fire MBAs everywhere.Actually, not sure that'll fix enshittification, but it'll make the world an overall better place.

I'm rather surprised Microsoft didn't try to do some wanko embedding shit.
Or! Translate the runner and hook all the calls for controls and translate them into the Modern UI equivalents!Because they got infected by the second system syndrome and designed the new UI framework as completely different from the old one, so now they simply can't be combined in any way.

Raymond Chen mode: well, that is basically how Windows 95 worked with brain-transplanting the DOS kernel.
-
And Windows 95 wasn't known for its reliability. Now imagine if instead of Raymond Chen, MS had hired @Tsaukpaetra.

Given how often Windows requires rebooted, can we really say they didn't? Has anyone seen Raymond Chen and @Tsaukpaetra in the same room?

That was a joke back in the 90s though. I’m sure I still have meme images from back then about MS assimilating things.

Given how often Windows requires rebooted
That really depends on what your definition of requires is. My average time between reboots is ~6months for gaming pc. Sure windows wants to restart for a new update every ten minutes, but they can wait until I am good and ready.

Running a suitably expensive version of Windows I take it?
-
Not really, Windows has been able to do run like that since windows 2000. Windows 98 and especially Windows 95 liked to be restarted. Windows 3.1 crashed often enough it didn't matter.
No experience with Windows ME or Vista, so they might have been worse.

Ah so gaming PC isn’t running Windows 10 or 11 because you don’t get 6 months uptime without fuckery or expensive versions.

I have windows 10 pro on my gaming machine, which I suppose is an expensive version, it was only $10 more than home when I bought (OEM) it years ago.
-
@Dragoon Pro doesn't get you 6 months uptime, you can only delay updates by a few days before they get forced on you.
-
Pretty sure that is what I have at home, but I could be wrong, it has been years since I installed it. I will check when I get home.

I also have Pro, and I have been bitten by the update cycle this way too.
-

Not true. I haven't had a "forced" update since forever. I update manually, when it is convenient for me. Microsoft will try to convince you that this isn't possible, but it is. Its literally just a couple of registry changes.
In theory, automatic updates are the best way of doing it. You shouldn't have to worry about updates and it should all be taken care of silently in the background. Unfortunately, Microsoft has fucked things up so badly that manual updating is faster and safer.

I have Home, and I can't get to 6 months, but I can get 2 or 3 before it becomes so slow and unresponsive that I'm forced to reboot. Of course, when I reboot it forces the updates on me.

See earlier caveat of either fuckery or expensive version of Windows.

Meanwhile, I still shut my computers down when I'm done using them...and I mean shut down, not partially-hibernated Fast Startup. I let it do the updates then.
-
Yeah, I do have Win 10 Pro at home and do recall editing the registry, so I guess it was fuckery.

My wife's father does that. He turns on his computer long enough to check/send e-mail and do whatever he needs to do right at that minute. Then shuts it down.
