It's funny. As the quote is a jpeg, it gives slightly different values to the colour picker. Some are slightly more green then red, some the other way around.

It is indeed mostly blue, but also it's red. In trivia, it's slightly more green than red, but I guess we're not talking about that.
That's a lot more green than I was expecting, especially for a violet.

I imagine that means it would sound greener in dictation.

A conversation had me considering whether PANTONE® was ready for the new year yet. Joyously, it is! This is the year of 18-1750 Viva Magenta.
There’s not really much to say that wasn’t said last year; the blurb is about as vacuous as you’d expect. Also I’ve nearly blown my thread budget for this year in the first week alone. Oh, well I suppose this might be a Betaverse joke:
Now don’t tell PANTONE® this, but I’ve found a sophisticated routine to skewer their corporate firewalls and exfiltrate the Secret Info for publication:
Bet you wish you hadn’t subscribed to Pantone Connect now! I can already imagine the furious executive rifling through filing cabinets trying to find fingerprints on this
TOP SECRET
information, screaming “Shut it down!” into the phone clamped between their head and shoulder.

Pantone has SomewhatUnusual™ idea of what magenta is. I would call that a bordeaux, or wine red, but the last years colour is closer to what I'd call magenta.
And the web colors and x11 colors agree with me: all the colours called ‘magenta’ there have as much blue as red, not 2.5× more red like this one.

Apparently they've been publishing colour of the year at least since 2000. It just for some weird reason made the news last year.

I am thoroughly confused by this. When I read magenta, I think of the stuff that always runs out second if you just refilled the cyan in your printer. I.e., mapped to RGB, roughly this (from your link):
I also agree that the colors in @kazitor's first picture are much darker and look more like bordeaux or whatever. But then there's the second picture ... First off, I don't see that color in the color swatch, or anything close to it, anywhere in the first picture. And it looks much more like a soft purple or lavender to me, with much more blue than red, but apparently it's more red than blue? Do I need to see a doctor?
I think there's something wrong and he didn't pick the correct html tag:
Fake edit: Come to think of it, maybe I'm an idiot (INB4 ) and this is just an effect of the inspector overlay changing the color.

I even went to the effort of hovering the mouse over the element in the tree when taking the screenshot so it would be applied. Behold my boundless wisdom. (I just wanted the dotted lines and label)

“roughly this” (fuchsia) is not at all like the magenta you’ll find in a colour printer. The pigments you’ll find are closer to, well, that Maroon Flush. Much redder.
The primaries of sRGB just match CRT-era phosphors, not any sort of fundamental reality. There’s no reason to expect printers to work like anti-CRTs.
while we’re here…

I was vaguely aware of it before, certainly not enough to look up or keep track of, but some coverage of it last year inspired me to delve into the budget mostly to rant about people that would actually take it seriously.
Regarding PANTONE® itself, colour reproduction across media is a valid service but the way they want to claim ownership of swatches, where even sRGB coordinates are coveted intellectual property, is seriously stupid. And not even clearly legally defensible (not that can’t stop them from trying).

Obviously.

Well, the other thing that comes to mind when reading magenta is the color a certain phone company uses, and thinks it's their trademark, which does also look like the RGB magenta (#ff00ff).
Thankfully, I never had to look into the pigments / ink of a printer. Just looking at the cartridges from outside, however, what they print on the labels varies in look quite strongly between the above mentioned bright magenta and your much darker one:Vs.
-
@topspin said in PANTONE® dictates the colour of 2022!:
First off, I don't see that color in the color swatch
The color is changed by the selection highlight in devtools. He did pick the tag that was annotated as ‘Viva Magenta’; I checked that (because the color looked different from the graphics, and doing that I realized it was the devtools highlight changing it).

There is no reason except for the one that it keeps the RGB→CMYK conversion simple, so it's very much exactly how they work.

… which might be the result of the very same naming confusion we are talking about. The label was quite likely done by an independent graphic designer and if he looked up magenta in the Pantone color chart instead of the web one, this would be the result. Note that the cyan one in the last image is also quite far from what the negative red the ink is supposed to be.

They still have people employed at engineering divisions? I was pretty sure, judging by their latest achievements, that they hire groups of teenagers ad hoc and pay them in weed. Or possibly just monkeys.
