Filed under: object reference not set to an instance of an object
I love it when developers wrap things in a try/catch that cannot possibly throw a catchable exception.
Oh, they'll do that for things that absolutely can throw an exception too, and then replace the detail carried by the exn (you know, the thing that might let you find and fix the bug) with something bland and completely unactionable. Or just drop it entirely. That's even worse than logging the thing in every method it passes through on the way out to the real exception handler (aka let's have a gigabyte of log messages per error).
-
@dkf yup, I've seen that too, but I figured we'd all seen that and didn't need to whine about it specifically.

@Arantor Fools wasting their own effort is... tediously common.

I also see an extensive amount of re-throwing in this app, but not sure if that's just the decompiler being funny or something else.

It might be. That's part of how
finally
works and that in turn is part of howusing
works. (You get similar things in Java withtry
-with-resources and in C++ with RAII.)

Status: ROFLMAO I hit the play button on my keyboard just now. There are many potential things that could have started playing, for example the YouTube video that clearly has a "Play pause" entry in the Windows Sound flyout, or other pages that also have videos paused on them. What played? Well the Fallout Teaser Trailer in Facebook Messenger. Not the one I linked, the one above it that one.
Amazing.
Thanks Facebook Messenger.

i knew the spring assist cart eject mod was a bad idea....
at least i still have the Pokemon yellow cart.. before i tuned down the spring force for that test it absolutely yeeted my Pokemon Red cart into the ceiling so hard i think it's in my upstairs neighbor's living room.
-
@accalia Spring assisted cart ejection I remember from the GameBoy Player. It also could launch carts quite well, although horisontally. Including into face, depending on console placement.
-
@Atazhaia Strengthen the spring and you have your solution to home defense woes...

Status: By combining ad hoc "requirements" (more like wishes) from various clients, we now have a knapsack problem with additional constraints, some of them very vaguely defined, but with violations immediately visible as "weird shit happening". And the number of knapsacks is in the thousands. Good luck with "solving" that. I'm out of ideas. So far any realistic (faster than O(N^2)) heuristic anyone comes up with, fails for specific cases.
I predicted exactly this sort of thing if we don't vet "requirements" properly, but they kept digging.

Status: Just wrote some platform specific code, with different implementations for Windows and Linux. In an act of bravery, I commited the code from my Linux machine without ever even trying to compile the
#ifdef _WIN32
part, instead just punting it to the build server.Did it work? No.
Did it at least compile? Also no.
Should it have worked? By a naive reading of the documentation, absolutely. MSDN tells me thatGlobalMemoryStatusEx
is defined in "sysinfoapi.h". But trying to include that gives me:fatal error C1189: #error: "No Target Architecture"
. Amazing. What's the solution? Replace it with their everything and the kitchen sink#include <windows.h>
.After fixing that, it compiles and works.
-
@topspin Well, MSDN did tell you:
Header <lots of white space> sysinfoapi.h (include Windows.h)

Status: I hate the people that installed my drop ceiling 35 years ago.
One, they made it really difficult to get new panels in by having all of the corners/intersections wired to the roof. Because a hanging ceiling relies on slightly too big panels laying on slightly too close L-shaped guides, it's very difficult to turn the panels enough to get clearance. I already broke one of the eight in the pack I opened.
Two, the geniuses decided to not split up an 8x8 room evenly so I could use 64 panels. Oh no, they made sure to but the last panel on the outside wall to be 42 inches so the last panel on the inside wall (only 2/3 of the basement has this ceiling) could be 6 inches long (the panels are 24x48). I'm not quite as sure they made the same mistake on the other two walls. Both end in partial panels but it doesn't look like they'd add up evenly. But it still fucks up my plans because now I have to cut more panels than I expected, including ones I thought would be a straight replacement for the initial 16 tiles purchased.
Three, there's one part that makes me wonder if the ceiling isn't level or if it's the floor. But since I'm a damned programmer I'm already struggling enough with these "plug and play" tiles. I'm thinking of tearing down the entire ceiling and doing it right like a builder with a brain might've done.
God damned contractors. I hate them so much. Every time I think about calling one, I get so mad that people that swing a fucking wrench and can't do anything on time and have to be watched every second to make sure they don't cut corners should be paid such princely sums. No wonder people try to do this crap themselves.
