@DogsB so someone wants a promotion because Goog’s internal metric for developerness is “how many features/products did you ship”. It’s one of the many stupid decisions leading to the rash of pointless bikeshedding everything gets.
I wonder how that works. I had to work on a team of three or less to get that kind of freedom. Any more people and even the most obvious and imminent of problems had to have a ticket from outside of IT, blessed and scheduled by the Holy Council of Even Holier ITIL Words. Do they not have that disease or is it a case of "ask forgiveness, not permission" and seeing if you had a high enough DIE victimhood roll to make it through?
-
@Zenith I think the thinking is that if you can convince enough others of the value of your changes, that’s the metric - making the dev role not only writing code but justifying its supposed value.
I’ve seen marketing blurb that references “Think 10x” where their approach is about shipping 10 improvements rather than measuring it as a percentage improvement.
Given their general “be data focused” vibe, it’s hardly surprising they want quantifiable metrics to assess and compare developers and honestly… there aren’t that many metrics that are useful - cyclomatic or n-path complexity only gets you so far, +/- LOC is useless at best and dangerously misleading at worst, so “shipping changes” is about the only metric that makes sense.
And when you get into the game of metricising, you’ll get into the game of managing the measuring to try to discourage gamification of the system.

They have a different one, the opposite of ITILsclerosis. When your pay literally depends on shipping new things, corporate culture strongly distorts to work that way even when it fucks everything else along the way.

@BernieTheBernie what’s the threshold? I’m not at home and can’t raid the store.

That's a disease common in huge corporations and (especially) government 'workplaces'. Small and medium companies are often free of this.

What? Do you really think that
cache invalidation

Not only that, but a really fun "rubber band" effect where I get to witness stuff that happened hours ago deja vu itself onto my screen.

@dkf It's definitely not a picture of myself. I'm way more fat and do not smile.
Oh, and coffee is disgusting, which is all the more reason why I would not be smiling.

I believe the shipper has a warehouse in TX, so it's still theoretically possible, but given that it is now mid-afternoon on Friday, 9 June, it seems unlikely.

Clever. They don't specify which year.
Next occurrence of Saturday June 10 is 2028. That’s some slow-ass shipping.
Or normal if shipping into Brexitannia from the continent.
-
@Arantor Looks like the continent is a little isolated.
-
@BernieTheBernie but that's what we voted for, or something. Seriously, though, shipping from the continent is a nightmare now, everything takes so much longer and costs so much more.
On the flip side this encourages me to spend less money online so that's a win.

Considering some of the other stuff that's considered "acceptable" at music festivals... I'd not complain too much about anime tshirts.
