WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else

Microsoft has completely removed this capability from Windows 11.
They didn't remove it, per se, they merely failed to remember to implement it when they rewrote the taskbar.
-
@Gern_Blaanston said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:
you can't create ANY custom toolbar of your own.
I was about to say , but then I remembered the machine I was trying on is Win10, not Win11. You're right; the option isn't there in 11.

It some almost makes me want to make an App that just instantiates an AppBar. It would waste more screen space since you're not allowed to overlap the taskbar, but it would be something!

Superbar was the stupidest thing to come with Windows 7. It's user-hostile in every single way:
- the buttons move around (unless pinned), especially now with the centered one, because fuck you
- single windows do not provide window title anymore (like status or progress), because fuck you
- multiple window stacks require additional click, because fuck you
Perhaps eventually they'll redesign it again in Windows 15, and it will be positioned as a great innovation for productivity. But I'm not betting on it.

Oh, they'll redesign it again, for sure, several times. Will any of those be improvements?

The Windows 7 version worked mostly fine. But of course they rewrote it 8 times since then.
-
@topspin Yes, it did. Because you could turn it back to Small buttons & Don't combine

You could still undo most of this in previous Windows versions using settings, so I wonder if they finally pulled a Mozilla "nobody uses those settings" tactic and dropped all of them.
I know they already nuked the "vertical taskbar" option, which is how I kept window titles in view all the time, so no high hope here

Lock the taskbar, lock the taskbar.

Windows 11 uses the brand new Taskbar they wrote for Windows 10X, one designed for dual-screen touch devices on ARM with no legacy components. So Yes and No?

So first they go "everything is a phone", then they figure they need a new OS to support dual-screen.
Makes perfect sense.

Let them taste the triple screens...
-
@Applied-Mediocrity if I had the money for patent lawyers, I'd patent quadruple screens right now.
-
@topspin I'd patent T and let you keep the remaining tetrominos. Don't ask me why. I just like T.
-
@Zecc better make that 4 claims. Can't tell them it's rotationally isomorphic.

@PleegWat said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:
@Tsaukpaetra So maybe the problem is not in the RAM module? In which case I'd blame the memory controller.
So, apparently during the troubleshooting I updated the Motherboard firmware. It seems that some configuration changed between version 2 and version 14,because the XMP profile had to be set from XMP1 to XMP1.
But! It turns out the Motherboard no longer obeys the desired voltage of said profile!
So the problem was that it kept the "safe" value of 1.2 volts instead of applying the 1.35 volts the profile asked for.
Motherfucker!
All is well now. Well, except I got Windows 11 on me.
I am quite disappointed that the new update did not fix Bluetooth enough to allow both of my earbuds to connect simultaneously, making them fall back to "one does double duty and thus has half the battery life" mode. 😭 maybe next PC...
Damn those Windows 11 folks for not fixing your motherboard issue.

Figuring out how to turn off this misfeature was one of the first things I did after encountering Win 11.

Must have been the same code that allowed placing the tab on the left side.

I am so tired of the post-update "Let's finish setting up your device" like I didn't do that when I installed the fucking OS. Windows 11 seems to present the same three steps, regardless if they are done or not meaning the process always ends up:
SYNC WITH ONEDRIVE... oh, you already do.
CONNECT TO YOUR ANDROID PHONE!
BUY OFFICE... oh, you already have.So the only thing I have not done is sync Windows with my phone. However, I am using iPhone atm due to trusting Apple a bit more than Google with dataz. Maybe I should connect Windows to my old Android phone just to see if it will finally shut up, of if the "device finishing" will end up even more pointless.
-
Remind me in 3 days.
-
@Zecc Sure, as long as the day used is based off day length on Mercury.

Why not tell Windows 11 you have a Windows phone. It's most probably not supported and it will either stop bothering you or mock you
-
@TimeBandit That used to be an option! It stopped working before my Windows Phone did.
-
@Atazhaia said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:

:announcer: "It didn't"
-
@Atazhaia Have you tried turning it off?
That's for Win10, but I see it in my Win11 settings too. (Which just reminded why my Win11 VM did that... There, fixed.)
-
@dcon But the key thing is still: Why does it suggest things I have already done? That is very much a completely pointless annoyance, telling me that "You should install Office!" before after a couple seconds realizing that Office is already installed and going "Congratulations, you have Office installed!" and I'm like "Yeah, I know, I used Excel yesterday."
-

And your Excel files are just where you left them, too
-
@Applied-Mediocrity Windows is having a bit of a problem with my Excel files. I do some work on PC. Then go do some work on tablet. Then go back to PC and Excel will throw up a ”version conflict” despite loading the updated file just fine. And it wont let me remove the old out of date version for , I need to save it and then delete the copy from OneDrive manually.

Mine doesn't suggest any of those things after updates, and OneDrive is the only one I've got setup.

status: IT has decreed my laptop to be compatible and ready for Windows 11 and also plz reboot soon or it breaky.
Let's see what I come into tomorrow!
-
@Tsaukpaetra my condolences.
-
And I'm by upgrading my work PC to Win 11 despite the current recommendation is staying on Win 10. But Win 11 does have features I need, and works better than Win 10.

Status: Apparently, using the shutdown.exe utility to schedule a reboot does not in fact also install updates. I must have forgotten an undocumented flag or something.
Anyways, an hour and some minutes later, I have been upgraded!
Everything seems to be "Right where I left it".My first major gripe (that I forgot about on my home machine), guess how many windows I have open right now?
If you guessed "17" you're clairvoyant and I want you inside me.
I'm going to be perpetually annoyed now.

Status: Good fucking job, Microsoft.
You know, at one point it was impossible to have two files with the same name in the start menu. Now that it's a generated list, all bets are off!
-

I can't tell if the Start Menu breakage is caused by the tool, or just Microsoft being Microsoft and fucking up displaying it again.

IIRC you could still have that before if you had one in All Users and one in the User folder or similar.

Status: used Power Automate to script farming in STFC. I honestly can't tell if the variances in step timing are due to Power Automate hanging or the game being Shit as it usually is.
But it's actually working fairly well! Just had to use my proxy soul to sign in, because apparently it is impossible to write automation scripts without signing in.

@Tsaukpaetra Yes, but you still do not have the -2,147,483,648 bytes it requires
