"World" means "America" (in turn meaning the US) in the US anyway.
Usually "World" in the name of a US World Championship (e.g. the World Series [of baseball]) refers to the fact that the best athletes in that sport in the world come to the US to compete because we pay athletes more money to play that sport.
In sports where that doesn't happen, it's not a world championship. Nobody thinks that the MLS Champion, for example, is the World Champion of Soccer.

But we had David Beckham. Surely that satisfies the criteria you laid out.

Who?
More seriously, he's one guy who was at the end of his career, right? In baseball, any player in any other league anywhere else in the world would quit their current league to come to the US.
That's not true of soccer.

Well, baseball isn't really much of a sport anywhere else in the world either. I remember some baseballish sort of game for kids in Sweden, but other than that, it's even smaller than rugby here, and rugby is really small. I think I've only ever heard of a single rugby team.
That's not true of soccer.
Yeah, the rest of the world pays better than the US for that I think.

Well, baseball isn't really much of a sport anywhere else in the world either.
Baseball is a huge game in Central and South America, too. There's also long-standing leagues in Japan and South Korea.
Europe isn't "the world" either.

@GuyWhoKilledBear don't forget India!
Baseball isn't huge in India.
Apparently, about 20 years ago an MLB scout got the idea that he could teach Indian cricket pitchers (who normally throw at 90 MPH) to pitch baseballs (normally pitched at 100+ MPH) and open a new talent/recruiting/People Who Will Buy Hats pool in India.
Unfortunately the effort mostly flamed out and none of the players were good enough to make it to the Majors.
Disney made a movie about it.

Nice try, but the World Series got its name because it was originally sponsored by the newspaper New York World.

I would say that most baseball pitchers are in the low 90s. Guys who can throw 100+ are more common than they used to be but still a minority.
Funny floof!

That's a myth.
It's disputed, based on something written over a hundred years ago.
But in any case, even after it was named the World Series - looking at the 1903 world series as the 'beginning of the modern era', or something, it still seems to only have two leagues in it that are both apparently only based in US and Canada.
There are literally hundreds of other countries (well, two hundreds, but that is literal hundreds) that are in the world but not the World Series.

Right, but the best players from all over the world come to those two countries to play in the leagues that send teams to the World Series.

@GuyWhoKilledBear now compare and contrast that to all the other sports events that have 'world' in the name and observe that other countries participate with actual teams.

How many countries need to participate before it is considered a 'world' series? 2,3,5, more?

For what it's worth, 20 countries send players to MLB.
