What's an image file?
-
I am active on a web site for nature observations. I look thru observations submitted by other users, and try to identify animals or plants shown on their submitted photos.
A rather common "pattern" is that people take photos with a "real" photo camera, then take their phone, open an app, which takes a photo of the screen on the camera, and upload that.
E.g.
I am still waiting for the photo camera lying on a wooden table...
-
@BernieTheBernie this takes wooden table to another level. Is this some kind of lazy man’s watermark (I.e. intentionally reducing the quality so it doesn’t get stolen) or are people really that clueless?
I mean, they already know how to operate a digital camera…This reminds me of Babbage.
-
@topspin It is not only 1 person to do so. But several people.
Of course, if they manage to do the photo with their phone app, they manage to upload that without an intermediate step (at least, not a viisble intermediate step).
-
Maybe they spend most of the time browsing on mobile (or do so to upload photos), but haven't the equipment, training, or proselytization for USB On-the-Go. And for some reason they aren't capable of using Google Drive or iCloud. Without a convenient way to get the good photo to the place that they post, they make do with what they have.

-
@TwelveBaud When I had my last digital camera, hooking it up to a PC to transfer individual photos was . It would've been different if SDcard drives had replaced optical drives instead of optical drives just disappearing.

But consider the alternatives.
- camera with : pass
- transfer physical storage between camera and phone (assuming it's possible):
- connect camera to phone using a physical cable (assuming it's possible): dunno man, still sounds like work.
This is good enough AND it doesn't take much effort AND it proves (to a point) you're the original photographer AND it doesn't share the original with other parties.

Even that is quite a hassle. I have a Canon µ⁴/₃ with WiFi, but the app sucks and the speed feels more like :zwj:🦷.

Neither of these have a good enough change to work in the first place.

True. I'd expect people to try and find out how how to turn off the overlay text on the camera and make a bit of an effort not to make half of the picture show the camera body, but that's just not-nearly-cynical-enough me.

@Zecc said in What's an image file?:
transfer physical storage between camera and phone (assuming it's possible)
This is becoming less and less possible as devices transition from "the storage slot is for moving things on and off the device" to "the storage slot is the new internal storage since we cheaped out on the soldered-to-the-board kind".
@Zecc said in What's an image file?:
connect camera to phone using a physical cable (assuming it's possible)
This is becoming more and more possible. USB-OTG adapters are extremely rare and camera cables somewhat bulky, but USB-C to USB-A adapters are a lot more common (thanks Apple!), and as peripherals transition to USB-C themselves you'll be able to access your photos with the same cable you already use to charge your phone.
-
It's a shame that there isn't some simple, short-range point-to-point protocol available on most phones besides wifi. Such a protocol could be used for so many things. It'd solve the issue of transferring the photo to a phone, but it could also be used for things like wireless headphones, for example.
Somebody really ought to get on top of that!
-
@martijntje Poor Harald Gormsson would've never guessed why would people be cursing his name centuries after his death.

Yeah, we should have gone with Ivar. Much better fit for a Wireless protocol.

NFC is absolutely Shit for mass data transfer. I couldn't recommend using it for headphones either.

And now let's take a look at the administrative version of image file. Because bureaucrazy.
So I need a new passport. Go to the photographer to buy "biometric" photos. The photographer uses a digital camera (of course), then prints the photos on paper. Costs 17€.
At the town's office, I show my old passport and such a biometric photo. Some forms get signed on some tablet, and then I get the photo back.
Ehm, you do not keep it?
No, we do not need it anymore. I just scanned it.
But of course, submitting the image file is not possible.

How would you submit it? The resolution of a fax is way too low, and not in color. Think, Bernie, think!
-
@topspin We urgentzly need Color Fax TM.
It will run out of cyan soon, btw.
-
-
@BernieTheBernie however will we use CyanTooth communications after that???
-
@Arantor the guys who called it
BlueTooth
were color-blind, and could not see the difference betweenblue
andcyan
, so .
-
@BernieTheBernie weren’t they also the folks who made Myst?

@Zerosquare none of these approaches tell me what to do with the wooden table.

@loopback0 More indirection is needed.

I'm sorry, I can't see the wooden table.
-
@Zerosquare
It's painted white, can't you see the grain?

I used this PhotoChop™ model scanner:
It must be a problem on your end

And here comes the

TM (though it could be more prominent):

@BernieTheBernie That's ... less than optimal.

@BernieTheBernie Needs more
.DONT-DELETE.BAK
.

No “-final-actually-final”?

ITYM "-final-actually-final-edit" ...

@Steve_The_Cynic I see my work life in this post and it does not please me.
Though somehow that’s still better than “living document” style references to work from, like having a site layout design in Figma, then the designer just moves a thing and forgets it takes more than click and drag for reality to catch up.

Yeah...that latter is my fear with our new designers. They don't seem to realize that we actually need specifications for things, and that those have to stay fixed until you give us a new ticket to update the things. And that it's not as simple as drawing boxes in a glorified paint program.

I take it the software shown has no:—
Though the user seems unlikely to use that even if it had, I suspect, because it gives the impression of not being the kind of person who knows how to use the tools available …

@error no, it's a web-based knock-off of Adobe InDesign. It's where all the hip kids are doing their design instead of in Photoshop.
-
@Arantor still sounds kinda like Ligma.

@BernieTheBernie This is why I keep everything in source control.

"hip kids" is a strange way of spelling "prize prats".
-
@Steve_The_Cynic I don't personally describe my boss as one though...
-
@Arantor Not within his earshot, anyway.

@HardwareGeek my boss is a decade younger than me, so he is a kid. Hip is in the eye of the beholder...
