Status: Environment Canada keeps popping up rainfall alerts on my phone. Usually these alerts (extreme cold, freezing rain, blizzard, whatever else) pop up ahead of the actual weather event, but in this case it's been raining since last night. I know it's raining, and I know it's a lot of rainfall by how much and how long it's been raining

Well, that'd be an explanation except my Zoom call the previous hour was rock solid, with no glitches at all, despite being a full multiparty videocall. By contrast, MS can't seem to make their software cope with doing as well as POTS. I'm on Wifi, but I'm on a high channel so the amount of interference is minimal, and there's not much blocking physical stuff between router and laptop. There's also no powerline network to worry about in this case. It definitely wasn't an ISP glitch; I know what those look like (10–20 minute cut-out, not a few seconds). Whatever is going on, it looks like a software fault.

@dkf consistent with my experiences of Teams.

IME, Teams has a tendency to try to go peer-to-peer for calls. Which is a dumb decision, since if it picks someone with a shaky Internet connection to be the "host" leg, then the entire call gets skullfucked, instead of running things through a cloud based media server and having only the person with the poor connection experience problems. I haven't really found a way to configure around that.

Shouldn't matter for a 1-on-1 call. No idea which end was having problems either, but apparently the other end managed to have Teams crash-quit on them entirely so that's maybe evidence.
Not my job to worry about it. It is part of the other party's job though.

Status So we're finally moving off of our self-hosted staging environment (that doesn't really match production OR development environments very well at all anymore). And in the process, they're giving away the old server hardware to members of the company. I may have tentatively signed up for one of the 1U units. No idea what the specs really are, other than "Supermicro 5019 is a good example...16 to 32G ecc ram, 1TB drive". No idea what I'd do with it though. Don't even have a rack to mount it in. But it's got to be millennia ahead of whatever @Tsaukpaetra is using, so that's good.
-
@Benjamin-Hall Free stuff is free. That's a nice piece of iron. One thing about rack-mount servers, though, is that the fans are often loud as hell.

Funny thing--the message from our hardware guy said
We have some old (I must admit very loud) servers there and before we recycle them we wanted to offer them to the team.

@Benjamin-Hall So looks like I'll be getting a
Supermicro Superserver SYS-5019S-TN4
Intel Xeon E3-1585v5
Black Diamond 32GB (2 x 16GB) ECC RAM
SAMSUNG 960 PRO M.2 512GBsystem built in 2018. I'm pretty sure these particular units haven't had massive amounts of traffic on them. Whether I just scavenge the SSD out of it remains to be seen.

AT&T uVerse has some system problems (I just called). I've lost connection at least 15x in the last 90 minutes. Screw this. Shutting down and reading a book.

There was¹ a grey butcherbird that would do this:
I would say, “it’s so sad little butch died of ligma.”
Just ’cause it’s adorable, here’s a video of a juvenile grey butcherbird dying of ligma in real time:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOGcF_YvR7Y
And two more!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhq0eP0PWQY
¹: it’s not a juvenile any more. Also the current weather isn’t exactly conducive to such activity. Also the dying tray is no longer there.

Pasted a block of code in Visual Studio. The indentation level is wrong. Business as usual.
Pressed shift+tab while the block is still selected. Nothing happens.
Pressed tab a bunch of times. The indentation level increases as expected.
Pressed shift+tab a bunch of times. The indentation level decreases as expected except it did not go lower than before.
Which is still higher than I wanted.Tried deselecting and re-selecting and doing it again. As if that would do anything to help.
Same result.Took another look at the block. Why is it complaining about the keyword

Well, TRWTF was the person who removed this block in the first place.
That sanity check was there for a reason, and removing it is not how you solve problems.

Problem: Test fails.
Solution: Remove test.I consider this acceptable if the test intermittently fails due to environment issues, which cannot be resolved otherwise. Ideally the test should be replaced by a less vulnerable one, but this may not be ppossible.

Status: made a change, expecting it to break a test I'd written because it was a functional change. Ran test...didn't break (at least for that reason). Sigh.

Status Got a notification that starting next year, the annual price of Amazon Prime is going up. Worse still, in the same email it mentions that they're working on an Amazon Original version of Kids In The Hall

Status: Watching a video of weird contemporary music written by Karlheinz Stockhausen in 1970. Well, listening to it anyway. I can't stand watching it because the audio and video are badly out of sync, by 2 or 3 seconds, and it drives me up the wall.

Just stand 1,000-2,000 feet away from your screen:
- If the sound is ahead, the sound propagation delay should bring both in sync.
- If the video is ahead, at that distance you won't be able to see it anyways.
In either case, problem solved.

@Tsaukpaetra there used to be joke error messages from the Windows 95 era that said “You have moved your mouse. Please reboot to apply changes.”
I feel like the modern version of that would be “You have moved your mouse. Please sign in.”Fucking cloud shit everywhere.

- Wait.
- Verify change happened by doing
sudo apt update

Status: Broke the armrest of my cheap-ass Amazon-no-name-brand "gaming chair" last night. Between that and the fact that the seat leans to the left, this chair is just busted, so I put an order in for a SecretLab chair. My wallet will cry for a bit but from all the reviews I've read, these are actually good quality and the ergonomics are pretty good. They even had them "in stock" for an Easter sale instead of their usual "pre-order for a batch made in a month or three" sales model, so it should hopefully arrive this week.
