Or Steam on macOS that kept using the 3D-ish glass effect buttons after the rest of the OS went flat design.
AKA, "fighting the good fight" against flat design.

I feel like there’s increasingly a trend to say “fuck it” to system native behaviours and use frameworks that attempt to write-once-run-anywhere, similar to the recent debate on iOS vs Android, and all the time developers go for these solutions, it’s never going to change.
Swing called. They want their shit back.
Especially with the likes of Electron bringing web style everything to the desktop by default…
Including needing three gigs of ram and 100% CPU to render an image and a bit of text.
To say nothing about that virus that was injected 23 dependencies upstream.

status: pre-setting up Christmas gift.
After forcing me to sign in with a Microsoft account (I didn't immediately wipe it) it tried to get me to sign up for OneDrive , buy Office, and sign up with XBox Live! Also Dell sneakily tried to get me to sign up with McAfee.
And now it's doing Windows updates.
Yo I just wanted to back up the drivers before I wipe the Shit out of it!
Should have used Audit Mode... 😭

Fuck fuck fuck Shit goddamnit, I OMGWTFBBQ am going to destroy this thing!
apparently since I signed in with the Azure Active Directory account (instead of the normal on-premise Active Directory) it permanently associated the device with Azure, and attempting to join the local domain results in it telling me I'm an idiot and should remove the work accounts from the device before continuing. No, fucktards, I can't do that because the option doesn't exist because you fucking locked the account into it, and I can't convert it to a local account!
Alright fine, a reset it is again. Ever feel like you're in a time loop? This is my sixth go around....

I will say though, kinda pleased at this coming in a text message.

Or if you don't use a Microsoft e-mail account. Or don't tie your computer to that account.

@acrow Or if This app can't open (because Something went wrong)

@Applied-Mediocrity Or if you don't let it look outside of the Pictures folder (because who actually stores image files in it?)

The built-in Windows screensaver "Photos" lets you pick a folder.

Status: Installed Windows 11 on my main PC.
We'll see how annoyed I won't get when I ignore everything it offers...
Oh hey, that's nice, it has an estimated time to completion. Taking bets on how long it actually takes...

Too late. Took... 2 minutes, apparently.
Which is nice.

I want to know if it's actually dynamic. If it is dynamic, it's probably based on prior installations of that same update on other machines.
And if it turns out to be eerily accurate despite the non-existent Windows 11 installation base, then we can assume that installation time statistics are being collected from Win10 machines too.
-
And it could get even more accurate if they keep track of the average time installation time difference between the global average and your machine. Then apply that as a multiplier to the estimate.

I was thinking more PRNG/WAG, but maybe.

I rebooted back to the original Windows 10 install and.... What the absolute fuck?!? Bluetooth is gone from there too!!!
Or rather, it knows that it used to have Bluetooth, but it's "not turned on" or "unplugged".
Come the fuck on, Bluetooth is Shit, but usually not that shit!
Funny enough, apparently it registered as a USB device plugged into the internal root USB hub, despite me being pretty damn sure it was built into the WiFi card...

I bet it's like XP's installer's "40 minutes remaining" that jumps down at preprogrammed points and doesn't even try to calculate anything. Whatever the update is it'll always tell you 5 minutes, except maybe for half-year version upgrades.

I'm glad to see the new year is starting off as expected. If hardware actually worked properly for you, I'd be very worried!

You sure you aren't thinking about Apple?
And, of course,(As bad as MS's time guesses are, they're way better than Apple's!)
-
Apple does time guesses? I'd have expected them to say something like "the installation will be done whenever we decide it's ready.".

Which is very true on my old 2012 Macbook. "1 minute remaining" for more than 10 minutes means I'm doing a hard boot. Happens pretty much every time a new security update happens.

Following a hunch from someone on Reddit, which suggested I fully power down (as in, unplug from the wall) the PC. I'm thinking to myself, "No fuckin' way, that can't possibly help..."
You can imagine my disbelief when...
Perhaps it is a good thing I have no nearby table to flip...
-
@Tsaukpaetra here you go
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
-
Since installing Windows 11, I haven't done much. Yet I find it seems to have rebooted somewhat often unexpectedly (at least, it didn't joyfully tell me it rebooted for an update, so I assume it was an oopsie).
That, and apparently it REALLY hates Chrome:
At least it knows it's in trouble?
Maybe I should let it settle longer. Yeah, that'll help...
-
@Tsaukpaetra said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:

I've found it likes to do things like notify me that it's going to reboot at 03:00. When does it notify me? 02:45. I really shouldn't be seeing those notifications. (Because I should be asleep. Um...)
-

So I opened the bugcheck memory.dmp file into WinDbg and it says it was caused by Memory Management. Strange.
So I test it with MemTest86 for a day and.... Nothing. Seems fine.
Use Windows' memory diagnostic and...
How much you want to bet I won't be presented with test results?

-
@Tsaukpaetra said in WTF is happening with Windows 11? And nothing else:

No dice.
You'll be presented with a report that tells you problems were found but no details beyond 'how many problems were found' because Windows has become incapable of reporting accurate information as to what went wrong - because that's not user friendly. We need to have a sad-face emoji instead.

Well you're not wrong.
Event Viewer isn't much help there either.
-
@Tsaukpaetra has Event Viewer ever been helpful? I don't think I've ever seen a single event actually be helpful in triaging issues - but maybe that's just the style of issues I've had over the last couple of decades.
Also, I'm in no way surprised that MS doesn't give you anything useful. Computers are now applicables, no user serviceable parts inside.

Yes! But not for Microsoft programs.

@Tsaukpaetra Well, they tell you the problem (hardware errors) and the solution (contact your hardware manufacturer). What else do you expect ?
