RPG: The End War
-
@Mason_Wheeler Satisfied that this target is down, Jillian takes some additional distance from the remaining large demon. Hopefully it will attack someone who is actually wearing armor.
(Move 1NE, 1N, and end turn)
-
All right. Jillian moves. @HardwareGeek Your turn. @Jaloopa You're next.
-
@Mason_Wheeler Panapos runs past the inert body of the guard, Thad, until he is due south of the demon (distance 20 feet; max speed 25). By his estimate, that should put the demon in range (just barely) but protect Nigrim from the wave of thunderous force that sweeps out from him. He hopes that Thad is already as dead as he looks, because if not, this will almost certainly kill him.
@DMBot roll 2d8 for damage
-
@HardwareGeek
damage: 6
2d8[6 (5, 1)]
-
@HardwareGeek Demon must make DEX save. If it succeeds, half damage. If not, it is pushed 10 feet north.
-
[OOC comment deleted]
-
@HardwareGeek The monster saves, taking 3 damage. The loud noise makes it clap its hands to its ears, and clawed feet dig into the hard-packed dirt of the path, bracing itself so it won't be shoved around.
This round completed, it enters the turn rotation with initiative 12.
@Jaloopa You're up. @PotatoEngineer goes next.
-
Aeron feels uncomfortable out in the open, but not seeing any obvious cover decides the best tactic is to end the fight early. He takes careful aim at the ... thing and looses a bolt
@DMBot roll 1d20r1+5 for hit
roll 1d6 + 3 for damage

@Jaloopa
hit: 11
(1d20r1[6] + 5)[11]damage: 9
(1d6[6] + 3)[9]
-
Moving behind the chest in the hopes that it will provide half cover
-
@Jaloopa Aeron's aim is a bit better this time. The bolt strikes the monster's arm, but glances off its tough hide seemingly without doing any harm, falling to the ground nearby.
@PotatoEngineer Your turn. @Gąska is on deck.
-
Ruven spots two people getting flanked between two demons, and tries to kill one off. He draws his sword, calls upon Oton's strength, and charges the nearest demon, slashing and trying to bowl him over with his shield
@DMBot roll 1d20+5 to hit
roll 1d8+5 + 1d4 for damage
roll 1d20+5 to prone, Athletics/Acrobatics/STR/DEX to resist

@PotatoEngineer

@DMBot I can't count, please disregard the shield bash. (Casting Divine Favor took up my bonus action, so I don't get to shield bash as a bonus action.)
-
-
Corrected: things are dead.
Ruven charges the huge demon, and is just as effective against the big demon as he would otherwise have been against the smaller demons in an alternate timeline: not very.
-
@PotatoEngineer Enthusiasm counts for a lot, but not everything. The demon bats your swing away, hand striking at the edge of the blade to knock it aside.
@Gąska Your turn. @Vault_Dweller is up next.
-
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAA" but more carefully this time.
[move down a bit, attack from 10ft away]
@DMBot roll 1d20+6 for attack
roll 1d12r2+4 for damage
-
@Gąska
attack: 26
(1d20[20] + 6)[26]damage: 10
(1d12r2[6] + 4)[10]
-
@DMBot roll 1d12r2+4 for critical damage
-
@Gąska
critical damage: 15
(1d12r2[11] + 4)[15]
-
Errata: critical damage doesn't gain damage bonus, just die. Total damage is 21, not 25.
-
@Gąska Bob pike pierces straight to the monster's heart... or at least where the heart probably should be. The fact that it doesn't instantly die suggests its anatomy is likely not what you'd expect. Even so, that leaves a pretty severe wound, and the monster looks to be on its last legs by this point!
It gives another too-high wail of pain, turning and charging at the puny being that has inflicted so much agony on it. Clasping one fist inside the other hand, it brings the two down together, directly on Bob's head, smashing him hard for 6 damage.
@Vault_Dweller You're up. @PleegWat is on deck
-
Nigrim sees that the big monster is suffering, probably almost dead, and decides not to waste his higher level spells on him. He casts Fire Bolt at the monster.
@DMBot roll 1d20+6 for attack
roll 1d10 for damage
-
@Vault_Dweller Since @DMBot is unresponsive, maybe error_bot will work.
@error_bot roll 1d20+6
-
1d20+6: 151d20 (9) + 6
-
@error_bot roll 1d10
-
1d10: 31d10 (3)
-
I'm back and better than ever. Still beating nine fives uptime!
-
@Vault_Dweller It's not much damage, but the creature is already burned, its flesh tender. The additional fire makes it howl in pain, and it looks over directly at Nigrim, snarling...
Feel free to move Nigrim if you'd like.
@PleegWat You're up. @HardwareGeek is on deck.
-
Fiercely, Jillian steps forward, slashing at the wonded creature, then steps back out of reach.
(Move 2 spots south, attack w/ sneak attack, bonus action disengage, move 2 spots north)
@DMBot
roll 1d20+6 for hit
roll 1d6 + 1d6 + 4 for damage
-
@PleegWat
hit: 20
(1d20[14] + 6)[20]damage: 16
(1d6[6] + (1d6[6] + 4)[10])[16]
-
@PleegWat How do you want to do this?
-
@Mason_Wheeler OOC: I don't quite follow. If it's dead, I'll skip on the disengage, step back.
-
@PleegWat HDYWTDT is a DM tradition, popularized by Matt Mercer of Critical Role, where the player who gets in the final hit on a boss is rewarded by getting to describe some cinematic way of finishing it off.
-
@Mason_Wheeler Ah, didn't know.
Jillian jumps at the demon and, with a flourish, cuts right through the neck. As she steps away, the monster collapses behind her.
"That's that I guess. Everyone all right?"
-
@Jaloopa @PleegWat @HardwareGeek @PotatoEngineer @Gąska @Vault_Dweller
...and with that, combat turn ordering ends. Everyone can RP freely.Post-combat EXP awards:
Everyone gains 250 EXP for the battle.
@Gąska Bob gains 50 bonus EXP for the first kill of the campaign, and 20 bonus EXP for a critical hit.
@PleegWat Jillian gains 50 bonus EXP for finishing off the boss monster.One of your guards/escorts is dead. The cart is broken beyond repair. Everyone is injured, except the new guy. (Who is he anyway?) And what in the name of all the Gods are those things that attacked you?
-
"what in the name of the nameless gods were those things?" wonders Aeron as he heads to rifle through the corpses. Loot is such an ugly word, but accurate in this case
-
@Jaloopa Whatever these things are, they aren't carrying tools or implements of any kind. No weapons, no armor, no clothing. (If they have sexual organs or sex differentiation characteristics, they're not readily apparent.) Their weapons are their claws and teeth, and the way their blood smokes and hisses softly upon contact with the ground, it makes it appear that trying to extract such things as loot might not be the best possible idea...
-
"Beats me," responds Jillian as she saunters over to the chest with the rest of their gear. Hopefully there are some backpacks in there too; lugging the chest along will not be fun.
-
Aeron looks around for something he might be able to use to store some of the acidic blood. It might be useful for poison or coating a weapon
-
@PleegWat Inside, you find everyone's gear:
For Jillian and Aeron, leather armor, a hand crossbow, a pair of daggers, and a shortsword.
For Nigrim and Panapos, robes, a dagger, a staff, and a spell focus. Panapos's spellbook is also inside.
All this gear is standard military issue, the armor and robes bearing the Kheal crest on the left shoulder.
There is also a Bag of Holding containing several days' worth of rations, two tents, and basic camping supplies. At the bottom of the chest is a sealed letter stamped with the signet of the 12th Irregulars.
For what it's worth, the chest was locked, but the cheap lock burst open upon impact and is ruined now. Thad had the key.
-
@Jaloopa Aeron gains +10 exp for an insightful act.
Unfortunately, there are no decent containers to be found nearby, but if you were to obtain some (perhaps glass vials from an alchemist?) blood samples might come in handy in the future.
-
@Mason_Wheeler Jillian's curiosity is running overtime.
"Why is there a bag of holding in here? Did they want us to get away?"
Passing that for now, she equips her weapon belt with her crossbow, daggers, and sword. Then she takes the letter, breaks the seal, and starts reading it.
-
Bob yells at the top of his lungs, "OKAY PRISONERS, GO BACK TO THE CART!"
Then he approaches the stranger. "Hi, thank you for the help with those monsters. While you're here, would you help me gather back the prisoners? There should be 4 of them."
-
@PleegWat Jillian gains +10 exp for an insightful action.
The letter is addressed to Tayden Barrus, Earl of Barreton, from Lieutenant Reginald.
Earl Barrus,
I am remanding these five troublemakers into your care, escorted by one of my most trusted men. The halfling woman is already known to you. The halfling male, Aeron Proudspire, is a poisoner who thought it would be amusing to ply his trade at our camp's cookpot. The rock gnome, Nigrim Bignoodle, was caught stealing from me. Treat him with caution; wild magic flows through his veins. The deep gnome, Panapos Scheppen, is a pervert who used magical tricks to bring shame upon our company.
The dwarf, known simply as "Bob," is a violent idiot and serial discipline problem. I found it more expedient to secure his compliance by letting him believe he is a guard escorting the prisoners rather than a prisoner himself. Feel free to disabuse him of this delusion at your leisure, and to dispose of all of these prisoners as you see fit.
Thaddeus Stone, the human guard, is to collect the latest recruits and lead them to our camp with my commendations.
The Kingdom's humble servant,
Fadric Reginald
-
Nigrim takes a short while to catch his breath. A lot happened in a short amount of time, all unexpected. He then follows the rest and fetches his gear from the chest. After putting on his robes and storing the rest of his equipment, he sees Jillian busy reading a letter. Curious, he approaches her.
-
"Bob? He's calling you a violent idiot and a troublemaker. Tells the Earl to dispose of you as he sees fit."
-
"What's dispose?" Bob asks, with a stupid look on his face.
He then looks around. "Oh, Thad's dead. Oh, and the cart's dead too. I guess we need to rebuild it before going forward. But how do we do it?"
-
"Means if we show up at the Earl's he's going to throw you in prison along with us."
Jillian folds the letter back up and hands it to the recently arrived Paladin.
"The lieutenant wasn't sending us off to any kind of trial at all. He's just trying to get rid of a couple of soldiers who don't fit into his idea of the ideal army.
