The world in which the campaign is set.
According to myth, the land was once a place of horror, destruction, and chaos, overrun by terrible creatures known as "demons." The Gods looked upon the world, saw that it had great potential beneath all the ruin, and drove the demons from the face of the land. They placed their children upon it, and used their power to guide and uplift them, helping them to flourish.
Telenar consists of three major continents. Avarone, the largest, dominates the southern hemisphere of the world, with two smaller ones, Kalder and Lin, to the north, plus various minor island chains scattered throughout the seas in between.
The Quon are believed to be the oldest civilization on Telenar, their matriarchal dynasty stretching back five millennia. They claim legitimacy directly from the Gods, that they were placed in their forest immediately following the scouring of demons from the land, though many scholars debate this claim, pointing out that, aside from sacred texts, there is no evidence that the mythological demons ever existed in the first place.
If reality has failed to produce demons to terrorize the world, the world seems to have done more than its share to invent terrors of its own. For much of its history, monsters plagued land and seas alike, and when the fledgling civilizations were not fighting against them for their own survival, they would frequently struggle amongst themselves. It's only in the last century or so that a time of relative peace has emerged.
One of the great marvels of the world are the magnificent floating peaks of Izavia. Mountainous island floating thousands of feet above the northern part of the continent, some over land, some over the sea. It is rumored that one or another of the Gods placed great treasures upon them, as a test of worthiness, to be claimed by those who discover a way to reach the unapproachable landmasses. (The fact that high-ranking clerics of every member of the pantheon have officially denied that their deity ever did such a thing has, of course, done little to dissuade credulous treasure-seekers.)

After refreshing the page, yeah.
-
@HardwareGeek And I had to reload before the two halves of the background would align.

@HardwareGeek dmbout?
-
@Mason_Wheeler as an Englishman, that makes perfect sense to me
-
@Mason_Wheeler Sure, go with that if it makes you feel better.
-
@Mason_Wheeler maybe I'm nitpicking, but it doesn't seem like creatures are aligned to grid?
-
@Gąska I think that's because they're flying
-
@PleegWat I see.
And while we're at it - @Mason_Wheeler what's the rule for diagonal movement? Always 5ft? Alternating 5/10ft? The page seems to be set to the former but AFAIK usually it's the latter?
-
@Gąska Yeah, Roll20 doesn't measure it well. Let's use alternating 5/10.
-
@Mason_Wheeler Is there a way to measure distance? There's a grid, but it's invisible behind the map.
-
@HardwareGeek on left hand side you have a toolbar, one of the tools is a ruler. It measures distance but in the wrong way. @Mason_Wheeler would have to go to the map properties somewhere in DM tools and flip the appropriate switch to use the 5/10 method. I've read on Roll20 forum that it's possible, but no instructions on how to do it.
-
@Mason_Wheeler Hexes? Works for me.
-
There, does that look better? And now with a hex grid so diagonals aren't an issue!
-
We're HOMM now!
(Personally not a fan but whatever, so far I'm outvoted.)

@Mason_Wheeler Looking through my post history, I see that I didn't ask about this already. Although I framed the question in my head, I never actually posted it.
There are some issues with one of my spells. They may be moot, since I do not have this spell prepared, and I have been deprived of all my personal possessions, including my spellbook, so presumably I can never prepare or use any spells I don't already have prepared. But I'll ask anyway.
I previously mentioned that I had used D&D Beyond to create my character, then copied it, first to the Google Docs spreadsheet, then to Roll20. (My son showed me a browser plugin that integrates D&D Beyond with Roll20, but I haven't installed it.) I thought I had all non-PHB content disabled when I was creating my character, but I noticed later that one of the spells I selected comes from Elemental Evil Player's Companion, not the PHB. Do you have an issue with this? Should I choose a different spell? Or does in not matter, because I'll never get to use it?
If I get to keep (and maybe someday use) this spell, there's an inconsistency in the description of it. The range is listed as 60 feet, but some online sources give the range as 150 feet. (I might have also seen 120, but I'm not sure about that.) However, the descriptive text states the range is 90 feet. This seems to be consistent in all the descriptions I've read, but never matches the range in the summary. What should I use as the range?
-
@HardwareGeek Which spell is it?

Meh, I don't much care one way or another. If it were up to me, I'd use the Pythagorean Theorem to calculate the actual distance, but I'm a nerd.

This option is available in Roll20 too AFAIK. @Mason_Wheeler?
-
@Mason_Wheeler My son pointed out that the range (60, 150 or whatever) is how far away the object can be before I throw it, and the distance I can throw it is always 90 feet from that point. So there isn't really a discrepancy, except between the 60 and 150, and I'm happy with the 60 feet I got from D&D Beyond.

Testing new and improved dice parser.
@DMBot roll 8d4

@Mason_Wheeler
I'm sorry, Dave, I can't do that
-
OK, needs more work...
-
@Mason_Wheeler Yeah, your name isn't Dave.

New and improved dice parser is up and running.
- Results are explained now.
- Spaces are accepted by the parser.
- Parentheses will group expressions as expected.
- The
d
operator is no longer recursive. (ie.3d3d3
is not valid.) - The
for
suffix allows you to give your roll result a custom name.
-
@HardwareGeek If the description consistently says 90 feet, and the summary data is inconsistent, go with the consistent 90.
-
@Mason_Wheeler just to clarify the game board - the boxy thing nearby is the cart, and the boxy thing further east is the equipment from the chest?
Also, a reminder for everyone that in 5e rules, every turn you can interact with one item in your possession or in the environment (such as pick up a weapon from the ground) as a free action. No drinking potions, though.
Also also, reading through the rules, I should've gone with a pike instead of a battleaxe. Same 2H damage, but has reach.
-
@Gąska said in RPG: The End War (OOC thread):
pike instead of a battleaxe
You're Bob, right? He's a dwarf? Battleaxe is dwarfier than a pike. A lot dwarfier.
-
@Mason_Wheeler I know I'm really pushing it right now, but since we haven't just yet got to a moment where this matters, can I do the last-minute change of starting equipment and get that pike?

I'm assuming that finding my casting focus in the chest is beyond the scope of a free action and will be my first official action when it's my turn, but if @Mason_Wheeler wants to let me do that as a free action, I won't object.

The thing marked "chest" is the chest. The thing further east was a mistake, which I've deleted from the map.
-
@Mason_Wheeler thanks!
-
@Gąska BTW please roll your initiative in Roll20. You can do this easily by clicking on the appropriate point on your character sheet.
It makes the management of the battle easier if I have that information available there in the system.
-
- Does this warning matter?
- Does it matter that I rolled it as Gąska and not as Bob?
-
@Gąska 1. No
2. Also no

I don't see a label, and I've even refreshed the page. But unless informed otherwise, I'm going to assume the thing that looks like a chest is the chest. Edit: Unless Jillian takes her shirt off, then that's the chest.
-
@HardwareGeek Blargh, stupid Roll20 with its "no one can see anything interesting" defaults. Fixed now.

Jillian shakes her head. Men.

@Mason_Wheeler Just checking since you can probably still retcon: None of us fell prone?
-
@PleegWat They probably did, but they'll have time to pick themselves up as the enemies are walking out onto the field.
