RPG: The End War (OOC thread)
-
By the way, Vault hasn't been on all weekend so he probably doesn't even know we started yet. Some people only visit on weekdays.
-
@PleegWat Yeah, it's been 3 days since he's been around. I rolled initiative for Nigrim over on Roll20. Looks like Aeron is up first, and Bob's on deck.
-
@Mason_Wheeler do I need any sort of roll to notice where the chest is?
-
@Jaloopa No, it's in plain sight.
-
@Mason_Wheeler Is the chest big enough to hide behind with naturally stealthy?
-
@Jaloopa No. It's not particularly big, and the rules for Naturally Stealthy say you have to hide behind "a creature" that's larger than you. You could probably use it for half cover, if the monsters start throwing things.
-
-
@Gąska Grats!
-
@Mason_Wheeler is the terrain on the west side passable or not?
-
@Gąska No. Those are pretty steep rock walls that would require climbing gear, magic, or specialized abilities to scale.

Any benefit from Dwarven Engineering, is that still a thing? I don't imagine there's a lot of fun in watching Bob build a switchback, tho.
-
@Gąska Just double-checking. What is it about your attack that lets you put a
r2
on the roll?
-
If I understand correctly, that translates to r2 modifier?
-
@Gąska h'mm. r vs R, right? Independent auditor says "probably?"
-
@Gąska OK, that works.
-
@Mason_Wheeler said in RPG: The End War:
@Gąska Of course you would post this exactly when DMBot is briefly down for maintenance
You'll come crawling back for my nine fives uptime, mark my words.
-
I think that was all the right rolls... I'm sure I'll have this stuff memorised soon and not have to look it up.
-
@Mason_Wheeler was I able to take and equip my crossbow as part of the last turn?
-
@Jaloopa Yes.
-
Going over the two-weapon rules, is there any advantage to dual wielding similar weapons (two daggers) versus swapping one hand for a stronger weapon (sword plus dagger)? Because I can't find any.
-

I think I did do it wrong. I added my DEX modifier to the attack roll, but I should have added it to the damage roll as well.
-
-
@Mason_Wheeler Interesting, thanks.
It doesn't really tell anything more than I'd already read in the PHB but it's nice to have it all lined up. Whenever I'm looking for this stuff in the PHB I feel like I need to read three chapters at once.
I guess I'll play it by feel (which is probably the better way to do it RP-wise too).
Does leave me with a nagging feeling of what use two daggers are when I've got a shortsword. I guess I could throw one.

Prestige classing, sometimes. Also some legacy weapons if those still exist came in pairs.
ed. none of this matters anymore, most likely. just go for name level and collect your tower...
-
@Gribnit I haven't run into prestige classes at all yet in 5e rules so that must have either gone away or changed names.
-
Just as an FYI, I'm usually not very active over weekends. I'll try to make an effort for this campaign, but I can't make any promises.

prestige classes
WTF is that?
So back in the 1900's, we had some previous versions of the game, sometimes played on actual paper with actual pencils. I don't want to bore you with the details, so I'll just cover the highlights... drones onand onand on
-
@HardwareGeek Basically exactly what it sounds like: special classes that you can take at higher levels if you meet certain requirements, that give you extra bonuses.
-
@HardwareGeek @Gribnit mentioned it. I haven't seen the term in 5e context.
Regarding the perception roll: @Mason_Wheeler asked @Jaloopa for one so I assumed.
-
@HardwareGeek Just for the record, the purpose of the spell focus is to replace the requirement for any cheap material components while spellcasting.
Magic Missile does not require material components.
Knowing this, would you like to do anything differently?
-
@Mason_Wheeler In that case, defending against the attacker is higher priority, so I'll cast magic missile, then move to the chest.
-
-
@Gąska That was amusing. The male judge was totally getting into it, while the woman beside him looked embarrassed to even be watching this!
-
@Mason_Wheeler the lyrics may explain part of it. They go something like "strawberries grow in the steppes, girl you're beautiful, I love you, will you marry me".
-
I'm getting shitty rolls. Is that enough to be hidden from the top creature?
-
@Jaloopa One problem with online rolling — everyone can see the roll, so you know the player isn't cheating, but you can't be sure the RNG is truly fair.

Clearly, you haven't built a shrine to RNJesus yet. A shrine is the solution to bad RNGs. Unless RNJesus doesn't like it, in which case you need to build a better shrine to RNJesus...

You should always have a lot of your own RNGs running to use up nearby bad rolls, as well.
-
@HardwareGeek you don't see DM rolls anyway, neither online nor in person. Or monsters' stat sheets, for that matter. The DM can cheat whenever he wants and we'll never know. RNG being unfair really doesn't change much from player's perspective.

except everything, but, only if consistent.

The difference is that the RNG hates you all the time, in every situation, and lets its wrath be known occasionally. The GM, on the other hand, knows exactly which rolls need to be tweaked, and can maintain the illusion of fairness by leaving the other rolls alone.
-
@PotatoEngineer said in RPG: The End War (OOC thread):
exactly which rolls
To within human limitations. The rolls that Random Nethack God takes umbrage to actually are the ones that mattered most.

5e stealth rules are kind of unclear. As per the explainer here, you can hide from him (but not from the caster due to line-of-sight) and you roll stealth vs. his perception.
For the purposes of sneak attack, though, you don't need to be hidden as he's engaged in melee combat with your teammates.

But being hidden will give me advantage, right? Which would counter the AC bonus.
I was actually planning on sneak attacking the third one, because I hadn't seen the skull and crossbones next to it

Good point. OK, looks like it rolled badly on its Perception check, and doesn't notice the stealthy halfling. Bad rolls all around this morning! Take your Advantage for the planned attack.

Mine weren't, but I compensated by forgetting to add my DEX to my damage roll.
