  • @cabrito CenturyLink's DNS has been garbage all year. It was bad enough I changed my DNS to Cloudflare, just so I wouldn't have to reload every single page two or three times.

  • @dcon And if you remember far enough back, many of them had ridiculously small mailbox limits too. GMail, or GoogleMail :belt_onion:, was one of the earliest "unlimited" providers.

@Zenith on the other hand, 100MB in 2000 wasn't that ridiculous. At least for personal mailbox, for most people.

  • @Gąska IIRC Hotmail back then was something ridiculously small even for that time, like 10-15 MB

  • Status: Well, tier 2 at Comcast may as well be the kid down the street. All that retard could do was send me an e-mail and ask for the 6-digit code inside. He couldn't even read the ticket because he thought it said I couldn't get into my e-mail. I told him a move failed and I needed him to look on the server for the orphaned mail file. He lied and said he couldn't see into mailboxes, to which I responded "that's a lie. You know damned well you could find anything you wanted in my mailbox under the Patriot Act. You know how I know? I was an Exchange administrator and software engineer. Tell me, why did tier 1 even escalate to you if you're even less technically competent than they are?" He kept saying it was due to privacy and I kept saying "you can say that as many times as you like but it'll never be true. Can't you even look at the server's error logs? What about tier 3? Is there somebody in tier 3 that knows anything about e-mail?" Well finally I guess he had enough and said he was going to close the ticket. I said "make sure you mark it closed unsuccessfully since you didn't understand the problem and didn't know how to do anything." This idiot actually told me to forward e-mails to myself if I lose them in the future. Fucking retarded needful not-doer.

I'm debating whether to call again tomorrow. It's on my employer's time so why not? God damn, how do you fuck up a move operation so badly that both copies disappear?

Though I really hope the sender can oblige me and resend these e-mails so I can try uploading fixed copies through an IMAP client if I can find one that can actually read my entire mailbox.

  • @Zenith Oh and since I've been bitching up a storm, how about Gamestop?

These idiots are having a 20% off Marvel sale with 40% off a specific set. Not going to lie, I'll flip that set for double original retail in a year, which'll be lower than the triple retail everybody else will try to get, and people will complain even though it sat for an entire year. So I order 15 figures, several in duplicate. I carefully arranged it to get free shipping all around between in-stock and preorders. Because God damn is their cart (and, ultimately, invoice) fucking confusing. So, anyway, now they're mailing them out...one at a time.

Why GameStop is flirting with bankruptcy, ladies and gentlemen.

Edit: Here's the stupidity of their billing.

This is what they e-mail you:
    75ad7ebc-7942-48f4-a3c7-6474fe3c13c7-image.png
All of the items are up above that, all listed at full price. Now, you'll see it says I saved $142. Yeah. Well, during the checkout, it said I was saving something ridiculous like $297 (I knew it was wrong...I guess they just kept adding not just the 20% but the $5.99 shipping per figure?).

Their online order details don't even show any breakdown. That changed since the last time. They also ditched infinite scroll on mobile (but, sadly, not desktop). The old details page used to apply the breakdown to the individual items...wrongly. It would average the entire discount between them in this bizarrely complex formula. For some reason.

  • Status: Feeling a little bad at possibly sending Comcast on a wild goose chase.

I reached out to the store and they were able to copy but not resend the invoices. So I have an e-mail with eight invoices printed one after the other. Eight, because a new order I placed at noon also failed to generate an invoice. What I received will at least help me reconstruct most of what I need for my system (I'd still like date times though). Also of note, the links in these copied invoices aren't garbled with tracking like usual, so that must be the mailer's doing.

Apparently, other people are having similar issues. Some people aren't receiving invoices, others aren't receiving newsletters, etc. So far, it appears to be class based.

I've been reading e-mail headers in Thunderbird, and what I noticed is that different types of e-mails travel different paths. E-mails to/from customer service are normal, from expected mailbox to expected mailbox. Order updates go through a MailChimp plug-in, spoofing the reply/from address. Weekly newsletters go through an iContact list. Product recommendations go through a different iContact list.

So now it makes sense why the one person looking at traffic at Comcast can't find them. I might call again to have them try searching for the MailChimp plug-in address, because that's the class that are missing for me, just to be sure. Or I might not.

I really hope the store figures out what's wrong with their software and I don't have to keep asking for manual invoices/alerts.

@Tsaukpaetra not really. A standard 700W would suffice.

On the other hand, the even-higher-than-the-top RTX 3090, a triple-slot GPU with a custom power connector, is rumored to use up 400W all by itself. But at $1500, it's way over what I'm willing to spend.

Wow. I paid almost $600 for my 1080 3 years ago. I'm due for a new machine; I might upgrade the card along with it. OTOH, GPU isn't my performance bottleneck. My problem is the physics calculations, which use the CPU. Xeon is nice, but it's definitely showing its age compared to current CPUs in its class.

@Gąska I'm torn about this. 3080 sounds great. Surprisingly good price. But one thing amazing about Pascal is how efficient it's been. With 3090 they've pulled a goddamn Vega. We'll see the actual numbers soon, but it's not going to be very good.

    nvega.gif

And that's a shame. That weird new cooler looks interesting. Most AIB designs look like Transformers :magnets_having_sex: Power Rangers, with every new generation more inbred and retarded, and now with more blinkenlights. But they do work. I doubt this new thing is going to. I've had reference 780, 980, 1080, and 1080 Ti almost-reference. It's been... well, they ran ok, except in summer. You're not supposed to play games in summer, right? Eehrm. I sat out RTX, which was better, but now the power numbers are up again, a lot.

I shall be waiting for RDNA2 to be released too, having something to compare against is always nice. And it will be interesting to see how well a 3090 stacks up against a Radeon VII now that winter is coming, so I know if I can get a better space heater!

@error Find a second-hand 2080 Ti. PCMR will carelessly flood the market over the next few weeks. 650 ought to do it, maybe even with some remaining warranty. Then flog it off next year. You're not going to lose much. Same thing happened with RTX. Two years ago I nabbed 1080 Ti for 400. When RTX got solid, space invaders beaten and everything, I never bothered to reconsider (well, that's a lie, but... you know).

3080 is going to have better performance than 2080 Ti, and NVidia says 3070 (MSRP $500) will be on par with it. So $650 will be a very bad price.

  • Status: Have to make another call to Comcast tomorrow.

I registered a new store account from one of my domains and received an order confirmation just fine. I cannot, however, get either of my parents to figure out how to create another Comcast e-mail over the phone for me to test that. So I turned to Google to see if Mandrill (the MailChimp plug-in used to send these notifications) was having some sort of problem with Comcast. Nothing current but last year (and sporadically back to 2012 or so) they had some of their IPs flagged as spammers/botnets and mail wasn't being let through. So absent another account to test with, I have to call the Comcast traffic people and see if they're seeing mandrillapp.com being kicked back in their logs. Last time it seemed like they caught it quickly but if that's what happening now it's been almost three weeks.

Called stop & go on mine, but mine doesn't really work. Not sure if that's a problem with the model or with my car, but I was warned it didn't really work when I bought the car.
It is convenient though that if the motor stops through driver error (EG releasing the clutch too fast) you just need to put the stick in neutral and then back in gear, and it restarts the motor automatically. The start button doesn't help in that case since its first action is to turn the electronics off.

Note I am European and thus drive a manual transmission. If you're driving automatic, some of the above may work differently (and the same if you have a different brand).
