Update: the new admin/moderation team and changes discussions will begin soon

I feel like, with the frequency of my posting about work stuff, and the size of my employer, someone could correlate several of my posts and identify me from that. So, I'm shy about posting work-related WTFs outside the lounge, and even to an extent inside. Anonymization only goes so far.
Especially because of the other things I've copped to here.

Can't do much about malicious actors
I disagree. Malicious actors usually don't become forum regulars.
For anyone who's played Gothic (so I guess 2 people at most) - the Lounge is like inner circle of Old Camp. It's very easy to get in, but you still have to work for it just a bit and earn good rep.

I'd be much more afraid of one of the disaffected regulars with access going unhooked and sliming people/doxxing people than someone deciding to infiltrate for malicious purposes.
-
@Benjamin-Hall I don't think any of the disaffected regulars would do that. At least I can't think of anyone. I would certainly be wary of telling anyone IRL my username here, but I don't feel like there's any risk of being doxxed by Lounge.

But the mega threads, while pretty useful for regulars, are pretty useless without an account.
For some reason I thought the front page widget would be set up to take last 5 created topics, rather than last 5 updated ones. That may need to be adjusted anyway - maybe sort by most recent post by the OP, so updated stories do put them back to the top but discussions do not?
I believe it just looks at the built in RSS feed for the category. It might be possible to write a plugin or something that changes the way those work. I've never looked at that functionality before.

I had some concerns with this last blow-up, but I'm somewhat paranoid. But then again, I post under my real name and try to post as if I didn't mind it all going public.
The "not indexed" concern is much larger for the garage, personally.

If someone knew me, they would definitely recognize me.
But NYC is a pretty big place and has a lot of employees. Most other agencies use the same technologies.
I printed out my rant on CRM and showed my boss. She thought it was pretty funny. I've mentioned other times that I've gotten help from posting on a forum.

@dfdub Joining the group requires approval, although I'm not sure if there whether every request gets approved regardless or if there are some basic standards.
I agree though - there certainly should be standards for accessing it if there aren't already.
If you're a user who has been around for a while (fuzzily defined) and post a decent amount to the point where you've become a regular (hah!) you'll probably get in.
The only people I can recall rejecting were super new or had been around for a long time but almost exclusively as a lurker or some particular user's sock puppets and bots. Generally, I think you have to have been around for a while to even notice the occasional mention of it before you realize that you might be missing something.

There's always a chance, but most people are here to blow of steam, and doxxing seems like a lot of work and very counterproductive.
And I don't think any of the parties in any of the longer grudges is the kind of people that would actually doxx eachother, so it should be a very low risk.Edit to clarify; I agree with you in my usual muddled and unclear way.

Well, my current coworkers would. But I change jobs every so often, and it would be quite awkward if, say, I suddenly found myself working under Yami. The probability is extremely small, but it's there.
After one particular incident involving one particular admin, I started regretting looking for a job on this forum. And there's one person here who knows my full name and current address and would gladly see me dead. No physical mail so far, though.

Yeah, it would definitely be awkward to be working for/interviewing with quite a few people. If only for my tendency to overshare nevermind disagreements.

@Gąska said in Update: the new admin/moderation team and changes discussions will begin soon:

Any admin here (and maybe mod; I don't remember if they have access to email addresses) could trivially find my real name by looking at my email domain. There are a couple of people (I don't remember off-hand who or whether they are still active) who have a (not up-to-date, but the phone number is) copy of my resume. Even in the Lounge, I anonymize work stuff I post, but even so, I'm pretty sure former coworkers could recognize me.
Also, I do know of one specific case of Lounge leakage, apparently intentional, outside the forum, to an individual who was being talked about there.
-
@Gąska said in Update: the new admin/moderation team and changes discussions will begin soon:
Edit: I'm pretty sure that historically, Lounge wasn't an open group and you had to actually ask for access.
Historically the lounge automatically opened to people with a certain veterancy, and it'd take them at least 2 months to get there. Courtesy shadowmod:
In the last 100 days: Visits: XX/50 Topics Replied To: XX/10 Topics Viewed: XX/235 Topics Viewed (all time): XX/200 Posts Read: XX/22033 Posts Read (all time): XXX/500 Flagged Posts: 0/5 (max) Flagged By: 0/5 (max) Likes Given: XXX/30 Likes Received: XXXX/20 Liked on Days: XX/7 Liked by users: XX/5
The topics viewed / posts read requirements were a percentage of recent activity, flags had to be sustained by a mod to count against you (so it didn't count and other badge flags), and if you were ever 14 days in arrears on those the Lounge closed to you.
When we moved off Discourse, the approvals list was frozen in time and now access is by permission of a moderator only.

That's why I registered with temporary email. Back when registering with temporary email was still allowed (Ben's done a very good job here!). I was lucky that Ben was kind enough to reset my password after a mail coming from an unrelated (and also temporary) address, or I'd lose the account when we moved to NodeBB!

Did it involve ponies? I think it involved ponies. And it was... special. (No pun intended. Really!)

Yes, I know. We made it as a mockery of the system and used it to bash Dicksauce. I mean, in addition to the rest of the forum. Same with Turn Left.
Speaking of - is Turn Left worth joining now? I never bothered to.

I have my real name in the email (now, didn't used to). I'm counting on the admins' decency and of course .
I've posted enough geographical info, personal and travel history that someone who'd know me could easily figure it out, but it seems unlikely anyone would stumble on here. Equally, a determined regular could doxx me but I doubt there'd be anything to gain.

I also don't mind reading that stuff when I'm prepared for it, I just want it separate from the SFW threads so that I can avoid it during the day.
And keep us from accidentally hitting suspicious image hosts via the work proxy. Though I think most people who post images rehost them here.
Yeah. That's certainly something NodeBB as a whole could do better with.

Anyone is free to send me money or whatever, I enjoy opening random stuff.

I've been paid, Blakeyrat continually moans about that. Just not as much as a real job worth my talents and laurels would justify.

I don't know. First time I drove through his hometown, I tried to arrange a meetup with him and/or the other forum member I know lives in the same city (actually, I think it's the next city over, but definitely the same metro area), but didn't get a reply as I was driving through. The second time, I didn't try, because COVID. I don't know if there will be a third, but if there is, I've already gotten a "cool, let's do that" reply, if we can make logistics work if and when I'm in the area.

Lucky for me, I understand German, so I could play it in its original language. The bad part was that I played it years after its release, so the graphics made me want to tear my eyes out. I liked the writing and the humor, though.
-
@dfdub I was playing it quite late too (it was a freebie in gaming magazine), but I was young and didn't care about graphics. But the first thing I did was get stuck on how to attack the first scavenger and look up the manual, and re-read it 4 times because the controls were so convoluted.

With my workplace having five of every seven IT people here on a visa from India, it could even be less than zero.
Also, @apapadimoulis, if you're really considering Dicksause, look, I'll write you a forum for free. It just won't be stuffed with DIV tags and 70MB of JScript because then it'd be, well, Dicksauce.

Maybe even giving all Lounge members the privilege to accept new people to Lounge, to reduce burden on mods.
There would need to be some method of voting for a quorum. Any lounge member being able to accept any applicant is a great example of security theater.
-
@Polygeekery my logic was that if they don't have good judgement of who to accept, they wouldn't be accepted to Lounge themselves in the first place.
