    @Benjamin-Hall Someone cue up a "This is Sparta!" joke, quick!

    Yeah, I wouldn't last 10 minutes in Sparta. They'd kill me real darn fast as unfit for their society. I'm fat, I'm physically out of shape (and have never been in shape), don't particularly care about physical activities, and am a pretty big wuss when it comes to pain.

    But since I live most of my life in front of a computer or in front of a stove, I don't particularly need much furniture. I bought a coffee table (the cheapest Ikea one I could), but that's not going with me. The dining-room table is only there because I had a group of D&D players meeting at my old apartment for a while (that moved elsewhere). So if that doesn't fit, it (and the chairs) aren't going with me.

    Helps that I end up helping other people move a lot (religious hazard), and every time I do, I have the urge to go home and throw stuff away.

    True. But I do actually enjoy helping out in that way, and it's one of the few physical assistance opportunities I can do. I can't help out outside (mowing lawns, cleaning up after hurricanes, etc) because of horrible allergies. I don't have time on most days to help out at the Bishop's Storehouse due to school. So helping people move every few months is a great opportunity to help. Unless they have pianos or large gun safes. Those are on my "someone else can do that" list due to bad experiences in the past.

    Status: Eureka! It looks like I've found the bug!

    Or at least a bug, need further testing to verify it is actually the one I'm after. And it was mostly my own fault, after all.
    Some details, while keeping it intentionally vague: The bug actually was in the ~3 lines of governing equations for the physical forces that I added by myself. Which quite definitely isn't my area of expertise, so maybe I shouldn't have done that, but it was basically just "integrating" a call to more complex code that I didn't code all by myself, and that underwent stricter testing. Also, to my defense, I had our physicist look over and approve these 3 lines, and we set up something to verify it produces expected output.
    Think, I originally had something like
    f = gravity(x) + collisions(x) + electricity(x); and I replaced that with
    f = gravity(x) + collisions(x) + electricity(x) + magnets(x);.
    Can't do much wrong there, can I? But there was a bug in there, even though we both overlooked it. There's two different coordinate systems involved, and I forgot the transformation. And, as luck might have it, another completely unrelated bug in producing the expected outcome basically canceled out this one, so for the tests it looked like it was correct (within margin of error). Dang!

    Oh, by the way, did I mention that it's after midnight on Easter Sunday and I'm working? Well... bored, I guess.

    @Benjamin-Hall I don't think XBox Live gamertags were randomly generated. At least as far back as the launch of the Xbox 360 you could pick them, but they were indeed (mostly) permanent. Google Play did let me pick, although I don't recall if it's restricted to their suggestions, or a completely free choice. I just went with one of the [adjective][animal][numbers] suggestions for mine.

    I ended up with an original XBox Live (technically Games for Windows Live at that point) tag of AvengingArdvark (with some numbers). No, I didn't actually choose that. It may have been me just blindly hitting "OK", however (which I then later remembered as being random).

    Edit--I remembered wrong. It was AvengingTick, not aardvark.

    My GFWLTag is one of the common IDs I use online, so it must have let you pick at some point. My Google Play Games...whatever is also one of my common ones; it may have had something to do with the stuff I had in Google+ when that was a thing.

    Both of these I had to go look up since I haven't touched their respective apps for a while. Guess I never 100%ed Arkham Asylum back before Steam.

    As an aside, alright, I see why I backslid, hard, financially last year. I was doing great for the first half of the year but then I went a little crazy on clearance pickups going into fall. I haven't done the sales part yet but I know sales were very weak outside of my show in September. Of the other three, at two I didn't even make my table money back.

    I haven't done any numbers at all for this year yet (aside from gathering receipts into a box) but it looks like corona is going to help me with cutting back on purchases. Hopefully it helps me again with pent up demand in the second half of the year (because it sure hasn't done anything for online sales in the first half,).

  • @error Today I found out I've been scheduled through the end of the month but I figured what I was scheduled for should've been over tomorrow if not today. Of course, now that I look at the EOD progress, it's looking worse. Seems some fool bought laptops without built-in network jacks. They need a dongle that loses connection three times during the imaging process (because reasons) and fail if said dongle isn't immediately pulled out and plugged back in. So basically they have to be babysat and thus fewer can run at a time.

  • Status: so you probably don't remember that a few months ago I posted a tiny rant about managing to buy airplane tickets for the whole family to go to the other side of the world. No surprise, we had to cancel everything. Yeah, that was time well spent.

    So now I'm waiting for the agent to reimburse me (the airline cancelled the flights, not me). Got an email from the site where I bought the tickets saying that I can rebook for another date or get a refund but that not all companies are paying a full refund (I'm pretty sure that's illegal under the local law but whatever, the airline we were due to fly with has said they'll reimburse fully).

    To get my refund there is a handy form that starts with:

    I agree to proceed with cancellation of my entire booking regardless the refundable amount or any other solution provided by the airline.

    LOL nope.

    That's just the most visible of their scare tactics. Their email is sprinkled with hints that I should be happy if I get pocket change from them. Well, that's like the plane themselves, that ain't gonna fly...

    We'll see how it goes though... I'm not entirely hopeful, it's not out of the possible that the whole company behind the website will go down and my money with it, hopefully it won't get to that...

  • Java Dev

    @remi It's called "If we reimburse in money everything we're normally supposed to reimburse in money we're instantly bankrupt". This argument has been quite effective for most of the travel industry.

  • @PleegWat Yes, I know. But while I can get some sympathy for the airlines doing that, because I understand that they have real costs that don't go away if they don't have business, I have little sympathy for the travel agent doing that, because their costs are much more limited. And I have even less sympathy when they are trying to pull it off with language that basically amounts to "we'll reimburse whatever we feel like reimbursing."

    Also, I'm not a lawyer but I suspect that the clause in the T&C where they say they're just acting as intermediaries and thus are not responsible if the airline doesn't want to reimburse is just bullshit.

    The transaction I made was with them, at no point in any of the emails I got was any reference to the airlines (and I mean that, even the travel references and itinerary doesn't mention it! Although out of the 4 tickets I bought, I got different email templates for 2 of them and these do mention the airline, but just as information about my flights, nothing more), and more importantly the payment was done to the travel agent, not the airline. So of course they're not the ones who were going to transport us, but I'm pretty sure that as far as the law is concerned, the contract I entered into was with them, not with a specific airline, and simply saying otherwise in the small print isn't going to change the law. But of course all that is ๐Ÿ„ if they go down and can't repay anyone.

    We'll see. They say they're swamped with inquiries at the moment (and even say "due to the lock down in India" so I guess I know where their call centres are! :rofl:) and to wait until 1 week before departure before contacting them (i.e. in about 2 weeks time for me), I can understand that. It's at odds with the other email I got from them saying to contact them within 24 hours (and blindly accept their conditions...), but I'm not too worried about that, as long as I have proof that the airline cancelled my flight (which I do!) even if I were to claim after my departure date I'm pretty sure they can't refuse to refund me.

    In a sense it's money that I already spent, for a service that was purely leisure (holidays) so it's not like I'm going to go bust if they don't repay me. But then obviously I'm going to be pretty pissed if they simply walk away with several thousands bucks we gave them.

  • Java Dev

    @remi Here they've set up a system of coupons (guaranteed by the same guarantee fund as normal travels against bankruptcies in the industry). I am slightly concerned that will just lead to them going bankrupt next year instead when those coupons are all cashed in, but in a sense it's not my problem - I tend to vacation by car anyway.

  • @PleegWat The agent is also offering to book again at another date, and the airline we were to travel with also has a system of keeping the value of the tickets as air miles redeemable later. I'm indeed not sure whether that will truly help them in the long term, but obviously they're grasping at whatever they can.

    But I'm not interested in that, that trip was only possible due to a combination of circumstances that's unlikely to hold true next year, or ever again (in part because my mother isn't getting any younger and while she was still game to travel this year, and I very much hope she still would next year, I've also got to be realistic about it...). So for me it's refund, nothing else. But as I said, it's not like I depend on that money, and realistically if the airline were to offer me, say, a 75% refund, I might accept it, maybe. But I'm not signing a deal before knowing how much they're giving me back.

    Either the problem is a networking issue, or it is something in the sound handling on your device. If the problem gets better when he turns off his camera, it's the network getting overloaded (particularly the local router getting overwhelmed with outbound video traffic and playing silly buffers with inbound audio traffic as a result). Otherwise, it's your audio hardware fucking up and if that's so, changing the software (above the driver/firmware level) won't do jack shit to help nor will replacing network equipment.
