Not quite sure what to make of this... "please don't use our product"?
I seem to remember that a few years back, MS was basically suggesting that people not use IE.
Also, given that Java is a free albatross Oracle inherited when they absorbed Sun, I'm not sure it qualifies as a product.
-
@jinpa said in "Please uninstall our product":

i get the impression they're trying to figure out how to fix that...... >_>
-
@Vixen That impression seems well founded.
I am not sure, though, how much they've learned from their earlier failures to do so with the other free albatrosses they've inherited like Hudson, OpenOffice or MySQL.
-
@Bulb said in "Please uninstall our product":

At this point i'm not sure they're CAPABLE of learning.....
-
… also they've already given up J2EE (taken over by Eclipse Foundation as JakartaEE), so I am not sure they have anything left that is worth for companies to pay for.
-
@jinpa Desktop Java is worthless and they are trying to move people away from it.
Server Java is, I assume, extremely valuable, given that many Very Important Enterprise Products™ are built on it, and changing your platform is hard.
-
@anonymous234 Yes, but most servers are Linuxen and most Linuxen have been using OpenJDK since couple of years already, so they won't see a penny from them no matter what they do. And Windowsen can now easily switch to AdoptOpenJDK or ZuluJDK too so…

@Tsaukpaetra said in "Please uninstall our product":
I can download required software without a login from the officially-sanctioned java.com , but if I'm on oracle.com, That's Different™?
Java.com offers the JRE only, whereas oracle.com has JDK
e: Although, looking closely at your report, I guess oracle.com has the JRE as well, but behind a login.
Also, I like "report yourself to Google"
-
@hungrier And it's very non-obvious what the packages actually contain. And they are Java 8…

Sorry, server Java is also worthless. Oracle tossed it over to Apache. With a cannon. And an army of lawyers.
-
@TwelveBaud Eclipse Foundation, not Apache Foundation.

Except when Enterprise™ products are only certified against the proper JRE/JDK and not the alternatives, so if you actually want support from the vendor you need the proper JRE/JDK and need to pay Oracle accordingly.
Especially if you have another Enterprise™ Oracle product.

Downloaded Java 13 because free, tried to run banking app, got a message "you need Java 8 to run this app".
I have OpenJDK 13 on my new laptop, and downloaded the current version of SQL Developer today which popped the message "SQL Developer requires a minimum of Java 8. Java 8 can be downloaded from [link to Oracle.com]".
What it turns out it actually means is that 13 is too new for whatever SQL Developer uses to detect the version of Java.

Going to Oracle.com:
Download Java 8 or Java 11: Account required.
Download Java 13: No account required. The idea is that the latest and greatest is free, but the older versions require a license. There is some exception about Java 8 still being free for non-commercial use, but better have your lawyer read the fine print to learn what "commercial use" is exactly.
Also 8 and 11 are the LTS releases.
IIRC Java 8 is only free for commercial use on the pre Jan 2019 versions.

For sure, but my point was there's still plenty of money for Oracle to get from Java.

You didn't explain it all that well, IMHO.
Limited input field, couldn't fit more if memory serves. I can try again if you'd like?

I meant in a "Yo, get your page ranking lowered if you please" way.
-
@levicki said in "Please uninstall our product":
If I had a botnet I would use it to report Java page as malicious so that only Oracle download page remains ranked. That would show them.
I believe the term the FBI uses for that is "cyberterrorism."

Hmm. maybe you could "hack" the input form's maxLength to accept more characters.
However, if their Oracle database crashes because you tried to send too much data they'll be mightily pissed off. Better not try anything...

The last, oh, 7 years or so, I've only worked with projects that use oracle DB and oracle Java. And the newest Java I've used at those places have been Java 8. My current gig is at a government body, using oracle db, oracle weblogic and oracle JavaEE 8. With a thick layer of retarded "improvements" on top of weblogic and java that make everything harder to do and use.
I got the java additions thrown out before the project even started, and I'm currently working towards getting weblogic thrown out and replaced with Java 11 MicroProfile or something similarly more appropriate. But this being government, it takes for ever to get anything approved.

It could be worse. You could be stuck on 7 or older. There are still people ( M) stuck on 1.4, for fuck's sake. The main things you're missing are modularity (meh if you don't need it) and
var
. It's probably worth at least adding a testing profile for 11 so that problems will get caught, even if you're planning on deploying with 8 for the foreseeable. There's some minor things that can catch you out. (We use both, and those exactly because they are LTS releases.)

Part of my job is killing those code bases off.
Not only is the horrible coming from Java 1.4 and Struts, but whomever designed that code was high on meth, drunk om bad booze and an idiot to boot.

@hungrier I suppose it could have been started in the Salon, to try to keep the discussion civil, but the likelihood of it avoiding the need to be moved or forked into the Garage is not high.

I didn't realize the sentiment was controversial. I just thought it was recognized generally as a problem in the US. Now that I know, I will refrain from commenting further.
