I didn't schedule any vacation time over the upcoming holiday - but my managers all did.
So, they didn't assign me any work for the next two weeks.
: "Did you do good work over the last two weeks?"
: "I completed all tasks that were assigned to me, completing the tasks on or before they were due. I also acted to anticipate the needs of our users and preemptively monitored our systems to ensure ultimate stability."
: "and this monitoring of systems, did it include spending every afternoon at the pub next door watching their sports TV coverage while building elaborate used pint glass stacks?"
: "nooooooooooooooo?"

status: Trying to make a quick-n-dirty hack to get the numbers out of a string.
//Hack string s = string.Concat(gameObject.name.Where(char.IsDigit)); int playerID = int.Parse(s);
Results in a parse error, because
s
contains the stringSystem.Linq.Enumerable+<CreateWhereIterator>c__Iterator1D`1[System.Char]
WTF am I doing wrong here?
Edit: I will say that CSharpPad.com does it right. I'm wondering if it's a .Net 3.5 thing...
-
@Tsaukpaetra said in The Official Status Thread:

Looks like it. String.Concat doesn't have an overload that accepts IEnumerable in 3.5. This should work though:
string s = new string(gameObject.name.Where(char.IsDigit).ToArray()); int playerID = int.Parse(s);
Status: Annoying that as we approach the holidays, staff at our clients are shoveling new requests on my plate before taking off until after New Years, so my workload keeps growing, not shrinking.

Yeah, I thought about that too, it ended up with a string that said it was an array of char (or something).
Ended up just slicing the first six characters off (
player
) and went with it. It was a temp hack meant to test if a joystick's functionality would actually work.

Using .Net 3.5 in 2019.
Not my choice. Apparently so-and-so is afraid to upgrade their game engine or switch targets. I believe Unity 2018 even has support for .Net 4.0, it's just a flipped-switch.
Might try toggling it and seeing what breaks... I can't imagine much, the games aren't that hacky...

The SINGLE thing that this whole ensemble was engineered for is BROKEN!
So, since FreeNAS is apparently unable to handle broken USB-to-multiple-SATA-drives devices, I'm looking elsewhere.
Seems OpenMediaVault is a good candidate, runs fine in the VirtualBox environment with the enclosure attached.
Fucking thing does die if too much continuous data is splashed across the interface for too long, but in theory that probably won't happen very often?
Will need to test on actual hardware.
Of course, testing FreeNAS in Virtualbox was (mostly) fine too, so... WHO THE FUCK KNOWS what will happen when I actually try it on real hardware?!?!?

Status: My Western Digital NAS unit is acting up. The Samba server no longer works and I can't figure out why, the integrated web configuration site is screwed up, and now I can only access files through SSH/SCP. I think it's time to build something custom with a Raspberry Pi, USB-to-SATA converter, a big QLC flash disk, and stock Linux file-sharing tools instead of whatever WTF'ery Western Digital put on their thing. I should also install Pi Hole while I'm at it.
-
@mott555 You might be interested in ODROID-HC2, which comes with its own SATA controller and a metal plate to mount the disk on for heat dissipation. It still has both Ethernet and SATA controllers on the same USB bus, but it's USB3.0, so everything is quite fast. The only downside is non-mainline kernel (4.14 LTS with a few vendor patches, continuously maintained).
But if you trust your USB-SATA adapter more and have a good power supply, Raspberry Pi 4 Model B might be a better choice for you.
-
@aitap I already have a pile of unused Pi 2/3's so I want to repurpose one of them. Speed isn't terribly important, I just want a central location to reliably backup some data that almost never changes.

Status: The core issue of star wars always has been and always will be one thing: in the original trilogy, things happened that you didn't see. Things that sounded really cool, even. You heard about them, but didn't know any of the details. It was a good thing.
So then we had a few decades where people made up exactly what all the cool mysterious stuff was. The prequels were perfect evidence that that was dumb, but it just kept going to the point where we get movies like solo to show us everything they ever mentioned about a character experiencing offscreen.
Star wars is kind of about hand waving though. It's both the strength of the original series and the principle power of the main characters. So the single most important thing about making a sequel is that you don't explain how everything got the way it now is. You give hints, but no specifics. Things are a way for a reason, but the details don't matter to the viewer, just the fact that they were written.
So then what was this new trilogy? Well, we got a mixed bag. It killed off some of the prequel exposition, but it also showed a few too many scenes about people deciding what to do or getting things explained. They could probably have cut straight to jabba's Palace, only throwing a few words in to explain why we're suddenly somewhere new. They probably could have kept the cast off important characters smaller, with less time spent on things no one cares about.
But I mean, it's been fun. It was dumb a lot of times, and shouldn't be taken too seriously. It's star wars. They still don't seem to get why originals were good, and big fans are probably even worse than the Hollywood people in that regard... But they're still pretty fun.
-
Haven't seen the newest one yet, but...

really?!
What I found most annoying is that, after the empire collapsed, we now getEmpire 2New Order with exactly the same galaxy-dominating army, the same fucking death star again, and the same fake-Imperator, all out of fucking nowhere.
Maybe that'll get explained in IX, but I didn't like it thus far.
-
@topspin it's remnants of the old empire trying to make a new one. That bit was fine. The empire was huge.
That said, apparently there was another big segment and everything about that is hilariously silly.
