@TimeBandit In this case it's a locked up sock-puppet account so that's unlikely.
-
@TimeBandit Unsure if that's even true - @Polygeekery has changed his profile picture a few times and I've encountered posts with that show the old ones.

Many of them are only half-baked.

I think that sort of black magic is too advanced for Hogwarts level courses.

If J.K. Rowling were to try it then it might be rather hit or miss.

It was clever enough that I nearly missed it. But then you invalidated my cache and I read it again.

Haha, "opted out of an ad"?
No, it looks like he's just opting out of the privacy policy which means they
won'twill make a feeble attempt not to store anything about him. Of course, since nothing is stored the TV can no longer remember if you've already seen that ad, so please disregard any ads you've already seen or kindly opt-in again.
-
-
@TimeBandit I briefly misread that as "over ten thousand dollars" and thought: dude, they have every reason to believe you’re a moron who doesn’t mind those ads.

see this? this is why i no longer buy televisions.
i buy monitors. or at least that's what I ask for when i got to the store
What are you here for today?
A 52 inch 4k Monitor.
A 52 in television?
No, a monitor. No TV tuner, no internet connectivity. Just a 52 inch display, okay speakers built in, and power input and an HDMI jack. That's it. A 52 inch Monitor
well there's this samsung...
Does it have anything "smart" or "internet enabled" in it?
yyyyyesssssss...
Not interested. What else do you have?
Uhh.... well if you're certain of the size you want...
I am. I could do a 48 or even a 56, but it's got to be in that range.
In that case I think we have reached, what my manager insists on referring to as an "Imp Ass".... Sorry.
Me too.... For alas I will have to take my suspiciously large stack of cash elsewhere.

I think you stand at least as much chance finding a product that does contain such, but can be reflashed without it.

eeh. there's that.... plus i do run pi-hole so...... it probably wouldn't be an issue.
or I could just get a proper monitor. they do make them that big for things like airport arrivals/.departures signs. Those are literally built around standard monitors.
probably wouldn't have sound, but that's cool i can do a sound bar.
-
You can just get a Smart TV and not connect it to a network.
The first Smart TV I got was simply because it had more HDMI ports than the dumb TVs in the same shop, although then I realised that some of the smart features were actually useful and deliberately got one when it was time to replace the other TV.
-

I have a smart TV, sadly, because there's pretty much no easily accessible non-smart option for 4K at a good TV size. I did make sure to get one with Android, because I figured that it theoretically should have better support than the OSes out there. And I can make my own apps for it. And maybe even reflash it with a custom ROM. And Google already has all those details from my phone anyway.
-
@Vixen Most of the large monitors sold where I am have built-in speakers. Of course, "most" means like 2 out of 3 models, and I'm sure the speakers will sound like shit even to me anyway, so why not spend the extra 200 bucks on a soundbar. A lot of them have a bunch of possible inputs - HDMI, SPDIF, 3.5mm jack and often Bluetooth, and I don't see these going away anytime soon, so even if you replace your monitor for some reason, the soundbar should work with the new one too.
That's what I'm going to do at some point: get a 50" monitor, a soundbar, and a small media server. Or at least I was going to, but I recently realized I haven't watched a movie in ages because the one single new movie coming out every year that doesn't make me want to kill myself isn't worth the investment, it's actually cheaper to pay for a movie theater ticket instead.
-
@blek ...on a second thought, make sure the soundbar has absolutely no radios, because I think we're like 2 years from those getting "smart" too and just playing audio ads till you drink a Mountain Dew.
-
When me and my GF split up, she got the big, fancy smart TV I had bought and I got the old cheapskate dumbtv from storage. Since then, she's had the TV not start properly 4 or 5 times, having to do a hard reboot to get life back into it. She's also had to do updates that took half an hour because the TV refused to work otherwise.
It's also an LG (I think) so it does have android... ish... but it doesn't use the normal app store for android tvs. Not that it really matters. The only problems I've had with the old shitty TV is that it has shitty image and even shittier sound, but I don't watch TV that much so... Since I bought it, I haven't actually watched any tv channels at all. It's more of a monitor for my media pc.

Just make sure it's got enough resolution for the distance you're going to sit at.

you think i should go for 8k instead of 4k then? it's for my livingroom area....
-
@Vixen I don't care how much it costs. Just think of the resolution.

not EVERY one, no....... just the ones that actually get funding from taxes... The unfunded ones care a hell of a lot about money, because they have to beg and scrounge for every penny.

I find that deeply insulting. Seriously, guys, I'm a teacher employed by the state and we very much care about making the most out of the money we're given in a responsible way.
So, for everyone here with this attitude: FUCK YOU.
Sideways.

I believe that you, as a teacher in the classroom, care about using your limited budget wisely. The bureaucrats and high-level administrators, not so much.

That's not what you said. And it's also completely untrue - I have had direct contact with said "bureaucrats" and "high-level administrators" for my state.

fucking shit piss on christ's crutch, is EVERYTHING turning into smart displays?! Do i need to go back to my old CRTs to get dump displays that just display what they're told to and not give any lip about it?
this whole put the internet into everything craze has gone too far!
