break;
requirement in switches is retarded. If case fallthrough is not allowed, then just add break jumps during compilation.

I'll see your Dio, and raise you Tony Martin.
Make no mistake, I love Dio - with the Sabs and elsewhere - but while H&H is an overall brilliant record, MR, and Dehumanizer are something of a mixed bag, and The Devil You Know is just plain generic (but, to be fair, so is XIII; sometimes it's better to quit when you're ahead).

I only have it there because A) that's how C++ told me to do it and B) the compiler barks about falling through cases if it's not there. If it's not reachable, the compiler won't bark about it. All the error cares about is that execution does not fall through, but it's fine if the thing that prevents fallthrough is a
throw
,continue
, orreturn
, or abreak
on all intermediate code flows. The warning is there in case you don't realize that dead code is dead. Which is a bit redundant since the IDE started colorizing dead code differently.@MrL said in The official unpopular opinions thread:

If case fallthrough is not allowed, then just add break jumps during compilation. If you have multiple cases directly in a row, with no intervening statements, fallthrough is permitted. Inserting invisible breaks would make that more confusing: sometimes it falls through, sometimes it doesn't, and there's no token you can point at to explain that behavior. Could probably fix that by adding a
|| case
token with highest precedence, but the language developers today are far more obsessed with making it a Rust clone.

@TwelveBaud said in The official unpopular opinions thread:

I know, it could be left like this.
Empty: fall through
Non empty: no fall through, jump
Break: force jumpYou just wouldn't need to pointlessly write 'break' all the time.
Inserting invisible breaks would make that more confusing
Nothing confusing about it.

Fair enough.
@MrL said in The official unpopular opinions thread:
general obsessing about nulls everywhere in your codebase.
As it should be.
-
@DogsB said in The official unpopular opinions thread:
In Java that creates a lot of unreadable shit and is the death knell of good logging and easy debugging.
Similar amount to proper
null
handling IME, with the advantage of notifying the caller that the value-not-present case is sufficiently likely for it to be worth spending effort thinking about.

@MrL said in The official unpopular opinions thread:
The whole idea of not-nullable reference types in C# is stupid, it makes code look like typescript.
How so? I don't C# much but I write a lot of typescript.
Related: I write in a typescript codebase that went through the strict:false -> strict:true transition. So many red squiggly lines. We ended up making a separate tsconfig.json file: the IDE used strict:true so we could see the red squigglies, and the prod build used strict:false so that we could take our time in the transition.
I, too, railed against the change, because it was being so picky. I've eventually come to like it (yay Stockholm Syndrome!), but I occasionally have a non-nullable thing initialized with "null as any" because it's not going to be null in any of the places that it'll be accessed. (i.e., if load() failed, nobody is going to access it, and if load() succeeded, then it's definitely non-null.)
The strictness thing also bites me in React code, when I have a class component that definitely initializes something in the componentDidMount(), but not in the constructor. Typescript thinks I need to mark it as nullable, but in every place that matters, it's going to be non-null, so I again initialize with "null as any". It's extra-annoying because the "right thing to do" is initialize in componentDidMount(), not in the constructor, according to React conventions. (We haven't migrated our class components to function components yet. We may never do it; it's probably not worth the effort to migrate working code.)
-
@PotatoEngineer said in The official unpopular opinions thread:

Reminds me of one place in our Python codebase where the only way I could make things typecheck was to do
other_thing = cast(Any, thing)
. Utterly horrible, but everything else wouldn't work for subtle reasons (the assignment was safe, but the safety depended on constraints checked in such a way that mypy just could not prove them despite being unable to be relaxed about it).

I went off to a have a listen. I still prefer Dio but Tony Martin was pretty damn good.

I could be persuaded to repost in the garbage. But I can't guarantee appropriateness or continued participation...

@DogsB All told, I'm not sure if I don't prefer Dio as a vocalist - however, I'd say that the Martin era had more good material.

Also UUIDs are usually a bad idea. A hash of the pertinent fields of an entity is usually a better idea.

I’ve never understood the appeal of dehydrated grapes personally.
Then again I don’t really get the appeal of hydrated grapes. Or even fermented grape juice.

Sounds like the kind of thing a hipster weeb would ask.
My sister has a Miyazaki and co collection so a few. Just was never blown away by them. Something about the art style doesn’t hit home for me. There’s usually an inordinate amount of noise to actual sales too every time they drop something.
Apparently Miyazaki is retiring soon so my feed has people talking about how their lives were forever altered by him. He’s threatened to do this twice in the last decade. He has to be pushing 80 now though.
-
@DogsB I’ve watched some of them, I liked most of the ones I saw but I wouldn’t say I was moved by them. But I could see if you got hit by some of the more… esoteric ones, you could think they’re all like that!
Me, I liked Howl’s Moving Castle and My Neighbour Totoro the most.

@Arantor Howl's Moving Castle was great, Spirited Away was great, Princess Mononoke was great (saw that one in an American theater!), Castle in the Sky was great, but Ponyo was pretty awful, Porco Russo was fun but nothing particularly deep (despite its attempts), Kiki's Delivery Service was also fun.
Lupin the Third: Castle of Cagliostro was absolutely solid fun, but that's pretty unrelated to the rest of Miyazaki's films, being from a series he didn't have any hand in. And Whisper of the Heart... I couldn't really get into that one.
I maaaaaay be a weeb. A wee bit. I don't watch much anime lately, though. I tried getting Funimation on my TV during the plague years, but the streaming was absolute crap -- whether the service was overloaded, or just didn't run well on the TV, I can't tell, but I was getting buffering delays even at the lowest resolution. I got it to watch Fairy Tail and One Piece, and I'd recommend either, though Fairy Tail more because everyone is delightfully bonkers. I only got about six episodes into One Piece before giving up and cancelling my Funimation subscription.
-
@PotatoEngineer Then of course there's Grave of the Fireflies. I've heard that one's a riot.
I've never really watched any Studio Ghibli, because I don't watch many movies.
Oh, and Crunchyroll is the current source for legal anime. They bought out Funimation (and so have their entire library) a while ago and now it's even available through Amazon Prime Video, so the streaming part is way better (the apps used to suck, while the web version was tolerable).
-
@Benjamin-Hall I've seen Grave of the Fireflies, and it is utterly depressing. It touches ye heartstrings, but I am never watching it ever again. (And I, too, don't watch many things these days, but I still watch a few.)

Yeah, that's what I've heard. It's on the "really should watch once, then be so utterly scarred you never watch it again" list.
