@Tsaukpaetra I mean, if I'm reading a post, and think 'this post is cursed', and scroll up to see who posted it, it's generally you.

Then I recalled, for whatever reason, this is what I'm currently doing:
Nope, it's not; I did not recall correctly.
It is indeed accelerating after moving the body, but only after saving a copy of the distance beforehand.
Guess I'll try some different integrators (I'm not even sure this is actually Velocity Verlet).

Status: The planning tool is down, as has been unstable since yesterday evening. I could get in for a quickie yesterday to doublecheck my schedule, but a colleague who wanted to enter some stuff couldn't. And today it's down for everyone, and it's not due to load as the administrator was unable to get any even though being in before most people.
Speaking of the administrator, it's her 40th birthday today and everyone is getting cake! Woo!

Status: Success!
That's about three or four orbits there, all lining up nicely.
It's actually using velocity Verlet now. That's what I get for trusting a source that isn't Wikipedia and calls it "Velocity Vertlet"
Zoom; enhance:
That's after dozens of orbits, zoomed in to 10 metres per pixel. I believe this is "acceptable". In fact, that line actually crosses over itself on each end of the orbit, leading me to believe it's not error but actually precession. Another reason I didn't go for the primitive patched conics route.

Let's pass it along and make sure everyone gets a piece!

Status II: Today is Walpurgis Night, where we celebrate St. Walpurgis by lighting bonfires. Extra fun this year because of the ongoing draught so we'll see how many bonfires will evolve into grass and/or forest fires, either of which could result in me having to do extra work tomorrow. As for me, I've been invited to a BBQ so I can't wait to go home and get my meat out and skewer it and then head to my dungeon master for funtimes.
I talked to him about the summer RPG campaign, where we will play premade characters for a change. I will get to play a pompous noble, bored with his everyday life who goes out on adventure "for a bit of fun". Of course, I'm better than everyone else. And I will of course have married my sister to "keep the bloodline pure". And I shall bring servants, because someone needs to cook my meals and take care of my clothes and equipment. So I'm looking forward to that too, even if it's over a month away as we'll be starting it in june.

I'm sitting behind a school bus with flashing red lights. Couple cars behind me. In a no passing zone. 2 fuckers blast pass all of us, including the bus. Where's my rocket launcher when I need it...

Aha. It was actually the dynamic runtime code generation at fault.

Not really, I'm afraid. But if it's any consolation, do head over to WTDWTF accomplished musicians thread to find that both of us are wrong about music.

@HardwareGeek said in Microsoft debuts Bosque – a yet another pointless programming language:
I just started a job that will finish (and fail, but I need to see messages from the log file to figure out what to fix) in about 8 hours, probably while I'm eating dinner tonight. But that's quick; some take as much as 48 hours. So much productivity
Running again, with what I hope fixes the failure. 4 1/2 hours in, and the embedded CPU has finished POST. Another 3 hours, or so, and it will start running my code.

FPGA-based simulation?
-
@Zerosquare No, that would be much faster. I'm not sure just how much, as I have very little direct experience with it. This is ordinary simulation on a run of the mill Linux server.
-
Status: Managed to get a 25% speed improvement on a match tree construction by using bulk allocation instead of individual allocation on each node and transition. That would be a nice result except it really isn't as much as we were looking for.
Getting more out is probably going to involve reorganizing the data structure so transitions aren't in a linked list. Which is going to be tricky. So instead tomorrow I will first invest time into seeing if I can get
perf
working and get some confirmation where the bottleneck is.

@Tsaukpaetra Not really sure how you'd haxor a phone in airplane mode. In any case, yes, rebooting fixed it.

A system on Earth, at sea level, with 4 GB of RAM has a 96% percent chance of having a bit error in three days without ECC RAM.

@Luhmann This is the worst shit ever. I'm not quite sure if it's slightly less annoying if you don't understand it.

Hence why it's essentially mandatory on any server I build, especially since the OS trusts the RAM to be reliable much more than the drives it stores data on.

My experiences were mixed at best, but might be an option.

That has nothing to do with article 13, as much as I despise it.
On the bright side, you really don't want to watch it.

@Tsaukpaetra The first four seconds and every repetition thereof is great. The rest of it is crap. If I wanted to listen to barely-melodic German mumbling I'd listen to Kraftwerk where at least there's interesting music behind it.

My experiences were mixed at best, but might be an option.I don't think that's useful here;
valgrind
is very good for correctness problems. What I want to know is where the code spends its time at.perf
isn't giving much useful because my dev box is a VM. Sigh.

@PleegWat It has a function profiler that does exact instruction counting.
