Trying to post / edit on mobile, more specifically iOS, is still unbelievably broken. Details differ unreproducibly, I’ve not figured out what problems happen when, but especially longer posts with quote chains cause a lot of problems.
Selecting text on iOS is always more or less painful, but at least consistent.
Whatever this thing here does, it’s not. Sometimes the cursor jumps back and forth wildly when I try to position it (i.e. between the position that should be under my finger and some other completely arbitrary position), which is terrible for moving the cursor and even more terrible for selecting a range of text. Sometimes it’s stuck in positions that aren’t even a real editing position (i.e. halfway between lines), sometimes the cursor disappears completely. When things like that happen, the actual edit position isn’t any way related to where the cursor pretends the edit position is.25DA92E8-A547-48E0-B77F-B5844C582F5D.MOV
(This example it only jumps around a tiny amount, making it look like I’m moving my finger just between two lines. But that’s not it, it’s just what I could reproduce while composing this. Other times the cursor jumps much farther, making it clear that’s it’s not me doing it wrong.)
Normally on iOS the autocorrect highlights words it is about to correct and displays a small tool tip with the suggested word and an
x
to dismiss autocorrect. On here, it does this sometimes. Sometimes, you only get the highlight without the tool tip.In another topic, the red boob prevented me from seeing part of my post, so I wasn’t sure if I ended the sentence with a period. I put in several more lines to scroll the boob and concluded I was missing the period, so I put another one in there. Apparently I already had one so now it’s got two. Since I don’t like having typos I’m aware of, I went back to edit it and tried to delete it. Twice. I failed.
I understand that the composer isn’t a normal text field as it pops up emoji suggestions. But it feels like instead of adding a small feature to the browser’s native text field, the whole field is implemented from scratch, badly. The only reasonable way to compose posts is: select all, cut, switch to different app, paste, write there, and back again.
To quote everybody’s favorite topic title: how can this be so wrong?!

Use this snipped of custom CSS (in your profile settings) until that gets fixed:
html:not([data-disable-tdwtf-css]) .composer { z-index: 1070!important; }
Then the red boob gets gone and you can post!
Also, get gud screen.

@Tsaukpaetra as opposed to being half Japanese by osmosis?

I really think so.

@topspin I switched off of Puffin for this exact reason - the WTDWTF composer broke absolutely everything.

I wanted to try this.
But sadly, I'm not sure what you're talking about....

@Tsaukpaetra I never cease to be amazed what horrendous settings you voluntarily make yourself / your phone go through. I've seen the keyboard-for-ants already, but what's with the color? I guess that's nightshift mode to reduce blue light, but turned up to 9001%?
Why is that in the video? When I turn that mode on, screenshots / videos are not affected, because the screen is grabbed before color corrections are applied. Likewise, if I were to run a screen recorder on desktop, I don't think the monitor's color calibration profile would affect the recorded video.
-
@topspin The keyboard is worse than everything else in the video combined. Therefore, everything other than the keyboard isn't worth mentioning.

It's worth mentioning when you have already posted about the keyboard several times before.

Posting from mobile for science. Hmm... This actually seems better than before on Android (pixel 2). I call actually grab the cursor and move it reliably using the little magnified bit that pops up.

It's not that color on the actual screen.

Wait, Android is copying iOS for the first time ever???

@Tsaukpaetra it's keyboard-dependent, iirc. I forget which one has that feature.

How does the keyboard determine how your finger interacts with (using touch) a text input? Unless it's actually replacing the text selection programming by using an overlay and clever algorithms...

And I think the answer lies in the following:
@anotherusername said in Alt-selecting links still opens them:
Circumvent basic browser functionality and recreate it in Javascript, they said. It will be fine, they said.

Note how the blinking blue line pretends to be a cursor, but actual editing happens somewhere completely different:

Where’s the fucking post buttons?
Pinch-zoomed out for demonstration:
Didn’t end up posting that, after I closed the tab and reloaded @kazitor ’d.
(And before someone throws a fit again: as usual, mobile Safari on iOS 12.1 / 6S)

@topspin So we're both as thoroughly unoriginal as each other. Good to know.

I just wanted to add to this, having been frustrated by using Chrome on Android.
I keep getting caught in constant reload cycles. I will be trying to read a page of threads, get a few posts down, and it reloads. They I try to find my place, read another post, and it reloads again. I'll let this happen about three times and go do something else. When I come back, I might have a few instances where it doesn't behave stupidly. And then out of the blue, boom, it's back to this crap.
Then there are a few interface bugs.
Sometimes the URL bar won't go away. Unfortunately, the URL bar covers the top set of controls (quit and post) and some of the second set (formatting). I'll go do something else and then on one of my checks back it does get out of the way.
Sometimes the hit detection is off. The cursor is one place, where it actually puts the cursor two lines up from where I click. Reaching the bottom text requires grabbing the cursor and dragging towards the bottom of the screen. The opposite happens with menus, where I have to click one or two items above what I actually want to click. So sometimes I have to keep cancelling a delete because it registered the delete item instead of the edit item.
Usually when I encounter mobile bugs, I can check "show desktop version" and kind of limp through (mostly horizontal scrolling, occasional zooming). But there is so much whitespace in the desktop design that it's a non-starter to try and read anything.

I've been having some of this as well. I'll be reading and then the thread jumps back like ten pages and it's a huge pain to try to get back. I assumed I was tapping something but it happens even when I'm being super careful.

I've seen that. I wouldn't have described it as a "reload cycle" but I suppose I could understand how someone could interpret it that way.

This happens to me once every time I return to the page because (natch) having other Apps on the foreground made this tab get "put to sleep" as it were, and that includes the websocket connection. Which it doesn't notice is gone for a while until it does and briefly flashes the "you're offline!" toaster at the bottom and instantly refreshes (why again?) when it realizes that, no, I'm not actually offline.
Other times the "how many posts are viewable right now" algorithm makes a mistake and unloads too many posts and causes similar (but not identical) behaviour.
-
@boomzilla I'm reading a post, the blue progress bar at the top starts crawling, and, boom, suddenly I'm in some totally different part of the thread.
-

You mean jelly-potato (that happens all the time while loading) or jumping back actual pages (as in pagination)?

Try increasing the posts per page setting in your user settings page. I have mine set to 7 minimum because any fewer and it can't display most threads properly.

I'm using infiniscroll and it scrolls waaay up the topic. Like a hundred or two posts (ass pull, but it's not just a few like jelly potato).
-
@Tsaukpaetra Mine's set to 50 per page. I did notice, though, that scrolling through the theme list with a keyboard causes some weird half-applied effects in desktop Chrome.

I happened to re-create while I was recording the screen and it looks like when I'm scrolling I'm accidentally pulling left on the blue bar sometimes.

Never did it before, but I seem to be doing it constantly now.

I can't click the buttons anymore since that, it always thinks I'm swiping that bar. (And was promptly mocked here for being too stupid to tap instead of swipe)

WOMM — for a generous definition of works. There were, prior to my posting this, 44 posts in this thread. Tapping while at the end took me up to post 41. Tapping again took me up to post, um, 41 again. Repeated tapping continued reloading the document at post 41.
Chrome 73.0.numbers on Android something ancient, infiniscroll.
Edit: The button now scrolls back one post at a time until it gets to post 41, then gets stuck there.
